    Get PDF
Birth weight plays an important role in infant survival, child development, and adult metabolic diseases. Maternal characteristics have been variously shown to impact on the progress and outcome of pregnancy, especially those related to birth weight and perinatal mortality. We carried out this study to ascertain the relationship between maternal socio-demographic characteristics and neonatal birth weight. This was a descriptive cross-sectional study carried out in Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, a tertiary health facility in a rural area of Edo state, Nigeria. It was carried out from January 2017 to June 2017. A total of 106 pregnant women were recruited for the study. All the pregnant women who attended the antenatal clinic, and subsequently delivered at the labor ward of the hospital within the study period and their newborn were recruited for the study, with the exception of those who declined. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to retrieve information on sociodemographic characteristics from the participants. Data from the questionnaire were coded and entered into an electronic spreadsheet. The analysis was done with the aid of IBM SPSS version 21.0 software. Discrete data were presented as tables, diagrams, and proportions (percentages), while normally distributed continuous variables such as age, and birth weight were expressed as means and standard deviation. The statistical test of association was carried out between maternal sociodemographic characteristics and neonatal birth weight. Fishers, the exact test was used to test for association between the variables. Statistical level of significance was set at P<0.05. All the respondents were in the age range of 20-50 years, with the majority (56.6%) of them between 20-30 years. Mean age was 30.12±5.52. All were married and most (58.5%) had tertiary education. Most of the women (58.5%) were multiparous, and also 80.2% of them booked for antenatal care. Most (61.3%) attended antenatal clinic more than four times before delivery, while about 64.1% delivered their babies at term (37-40 weeks). About 64.2% of the babies had normal birth weight, and 50.9% of the babies were males. Neonatal birth weight was significantly associated with booking status, gestational age at delivery, and neonatal sex. There was no significant association between birth weight and parity, time of antenatal booking, and the number of antenatal visits. Our study has shown that the risk factors for LBW include; high parity, unbooked status, few numbers of antenatal visits, and pre-term delivery

This research develops a novel method of generating the velocities of the right and left motors of the two-wheeled mobile robotbase on the distances of the detected objects according to the image processing technique using the Fuzzy Logic Controller forobstacle avoiding system. The aim of this research is to build a controller for avoiding some obstacles with distance informationobtained from the 3D camera or depth sensor which is mounted on a mobile robot. This sensor is used in this study due to itsdouble integrated sensor, namely vision and distance. The fuzzy controller is designed for obstacles avoiding the system to control the mobile robot. The position of the obstacle is generated by using a contour operation on a captured image, together with a Canny edge detector and morphological operation. The distance between the robot and the obstacle is obtained from a depth frame. According to these data, the velocities of the left and right motors of the two-wheel-drive mobile robot are generated from the fuzzy controller. The effectiveness of the proposed approach was verified through several experiment

Feature extraction plays a vital role in image processing techniques for medical imaging. In this paper, the researchers proposeda breast cancer classification system by using image processing techniques to help the radiologists that the system can improvethe mammogram screening process and increase the life of cancer patients. Our breast cancer classification system based on thecombination of first-order Statistics features and second-order Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) features and SupportVector Machine is used as a classifier. This system is composed of five stages. At first, preprocessing is carried out for removingnoise and detail artifacts from an image, reducing the size of the image by cropping, enhancing the image to show clearly theappearance of the image. Median Filters are used to remove the artifact, noise, high-frequency components and unwanted partsin the background of the mammogram images. Secondly, Otsu segmentation is used to extract the breast region from thebackground image. In a third stage, enhancement are applied on segmented result images to get efficient features for a higher classification accuracy rate. First-order statistics and second-order texture GLCM features are extracted form enhanced image.Support Vector Machine is used as a classifier for the classification of abnormal and normal images. Finally, performancecomparison of the first order, second order features and combination of first-order statistics and second-order GLCM features forbreast cancer detection system are done with classification accuracy scores. In this system, an input MIAS database are used forour breast cancer detection system

    Get PDF
A field study was conducted to assess the potential of cattle manure wood-ash compost in order to improve soil fertility and productivity in two areas in the centre region of Cameroon distant of 200 km. The farms were amended with four types of compost, C1 (100% cattle manure compost), C2 (95% cattle manure with 10% wood ash admixture), C3 (90% cattle manure compost and 10% wood ash admixture), and C4 (85% cattle manure compost and 15% wood ash admixture).  Soybean was the growing plant during the experiment which lasted three months. After the harvesting, physical, chemical, biological and plant parameters were evaluated. The compost significantly increased soil pH, Electrical conductivity, total organic carbon, total nitrogen, concentrations of Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Na+, and total phosphorus. The composts also had a stimulatory effect on the total soil bacteria and fungi, cellulase and protease activities. Improvement soil physical, chemical and microbial parameters enhanced biomass production and yield. In summary, cattle manure wood-ash composts could be used for alleviating soil acidity and improve soil fertility of tropical acid soils. Future research is needed to address its sustainability in a long-term study

Performance Evaluation of a Double Slope Concrete Cascade Solar Stills

The availability of drinking water is one of the major challenges faced by our modern society. There are certain locations where fresh drinking water is scarce, but brackish or saline water are available. The available water resources have been used to provide a clean, safe and reliable drinking water with metal basin solar stills using solar energy. The issue of rusting associated with the metal basin solar still constitutes a major problem. A concrete cascade double slope solar still was constructed and tested alongside a conventional metal basin solar still of the same dimensions. The performance tests compared the glass cover and basin water temperatures, as well as the yields of the two stills recorded at 30minutes interval, for seven days. The highest average daily glass temperatures for metal and concrete basin stills of 54.1 °C and 40.5 °C were recorded respectively for the metal basin and concrete cascade solar stills, at an average highest global solar radiation of 867.3W/m2 and an ambient temperature of 35.1 °C. The highest average daily water temperatures of 58.3 °C and 51.1 °C occurred respectively for the metal basin and concrete cascade stills at the same time under the same atmospheric conditions. The average daily cumulative yields of the metal basin and concrete cascade solar stills were found to be 707.1 mL 577.4 mL respectively. The results show that the conventional metal basin solar still recorded a higher yield, but the concrete cascade solar still has overcome the rusting problem. There is, therefore, a compromise of 18.3% higher yield or a longer span working solar still without rusting

The fuzzy logic control system determines the real-world constraint of the dryer’s heating rate to the dryer driver circuit which is constructed with the pulse width modulation (PWM) technique. Input and output operations to and from the computer system are carried out via parallel interfacing and Turbo C++ programming. The humidity sensing circuit is constructed around a 555 timer with astable operation which is a non-sinusoidal oscillator. This humidity sensing circuit produces a rectangular wave with the frequency indirectly proportional to the sensed humidity. In order to achieve the perfectively symmetrical square wave as well as to reduce the frequency value, the clocked flip-flop, CD4017BC that is divided by 10 Johnson counter with 10 decoded outputs and a carry out bit is added to the timer’s output. The resultant frequency is applied into the computer system integrating with the fuzzy logic and it determines the frequency value and its rate of change which are input to the fuzzy logic control system
