    KNOWLEDGE OF RURAL WOMEN ABOUT HOMESTEAD TECHNOLOGIES

    The objective of the present study was to find out the knowledge of rural women about homesteadtechnologies in Chittorgarh district. The study was conducted in Bhadesar and Bassi panchayat samities ofChittorgrarh district of Rajasthan state. From each panchayat samiti, two villages where the homesteadtechnologies have been promoted by the KVK since last five years were included in the study. The sampleconsisted of randomly selected 100 rural women, 25 from each village. Personal interview method was used fordata collection. Frequency distribution, percentage and mean per cent score were used for analysis of data. Theknowledge of the respondents about homestead technologies revealed that majority of the respondents (63%)possessed good knowledge about health care component. However, their knowledge was found to be average innutrition and environmental sanitation components

    The Need and Parameters of Soft Skills: A Study in Indian Perspective

    Soft skills training has become a very common practice in India and abroad in recent time,especially with the acceleration of globalization process. The present paper attempts to trace the necessity ofsoft skills training in Indian perspectives. It discusses that the growth of modern education system during theperiod of colonization was the foundation upon which all the modern education systems and theirconcomitant problems stand. A close study of Indian history is carried out as it forms the back ground of anindigenous and a well-established system of education. The gurukulas and ashramas were the focal centresof education in ancient India. Lord Macaulay’s charter on Indian education changed the face, which we stillcarry forward. The case studies and knowledge papers have been analysed to trace the different parametersfor soft skills. The practical modules and its methodology that are being practised are elucidated. Thedifference of soft and hard skills are elucidated and the skills gap discussed for a balanced education that caninculcate right values for the youth to fit into global community for greater good and welfare of many.&nbsp

    Geoinformatics for Groundwater Characterization in Coastal Areas of Thoothukudi District

    A study was undertaken with a view to assess the groundwater quality in the coastal areas of Thoothukudi district. 200 groundwater samples were collected from borewells, openwells and tubewells located five to ten kilometres from coastal line at regular intervals. The groundwater samples were analysed for pH, EC, TDS, TSS, anions (HCO3-, CO3 2-, Cl-, SO4 2-) and anions (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+) by adopting standard procedures. Experimental results showed that the pH was slightly acidic to alkaline in nature varying from 6.38 to 8.65 and the electrical conductivity values of the samples ranged from 0.17 to 18.08 dS m-1 i.e., good to alkali condition. The correlation studies revealed that the pH was negatively correlated and EC was positively correlated with all the other parameters. From the study, it is concluded that the dominating ions in the groundwater samples of Thoothukudi district were Na+ and Cl-. According to AICRP classification, 22.5 per cent of samples were good, 14 per cent were marginally saline, 15.5 per cent were saline, 4.5 per cent were high SAR saline, 23.5 per cent were marginally alkali and 20 per cent were alkali.This indicates that the groundwater in the study area were of Na-Cl type, indicating that they were largely intruded with seawater and are of poor quality.&nbsp

    PHYSICO- CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF ANTIOXIDANT RICH HEALTHY BEVERAGES PREPARED BY USING PINEAPPLE JUICE AND GUAVA LEAVES EXTRACTS FLAVOURED WITH HERABS (MINT AND BASIL)

    The present study entitled “Preparation of antioxidant rich healthy beverages by using pineapple juice and guava leaves extract flavoured with herbs (mint and basil)” was undertaken to analyse the antioxidant content of prepared beverages. Two beverages were prepared using pineapple juice, guava leaf extract, herbs extract and dates and to calculate the antioxidant composition of the prepared beverages. Two recipes were prepared namely; “pineapple based beverage incorporated with guava leaf extract, mint  extract, dates”, “pineapple based beverage incorporated with guava leaf extract, basil extract, dates” using the standard ingredients and method of preparation. The five treatments were T0(pineapple juice 92% and dates8%), T1(pineapple juice-88%, guava leaf extract-2%, mint 2% /basil 2 %, dates-8%), T2(pineapple juice-84%, guava leaf extract-4%, mint 4%/ basil 4%), dates 8%), T3(pineapple juice-80%, guava leaf extract-6%, mint 6%/ basil 6%), dates 8%), T4(pineapple  juice-76%, guava leaf extract-8%, mint 8%/ basil 8%), dates 8%), T5(pineapple juice-72%, guava leaf extract-10%, mint 10 %/basil 10 %), dates 8 %). Pineapple based beverages incorporated with guava leaf extract, mint extract, dates was the best among the one beverages. The nutritional compositions of the beverages were evaluated through chemical analysis. The total carbohydrate content ranged from 2224.25g/100 ml, energy content ranged from 98.45–104.7Kcal/100ml, vitamin C content ranged from 29.89 – 31 mg/100ml the highest being in beverage flavoured with basil.&nbsp

    Cost and Return Analysis of Rice Production in Song Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Nigeria

    The study analysed cost and return of rice production in Song local government areaof Adamawa state, Nigeria. Primary data for 2016/17 rice production were randomly collectedfrom 130 respondents using pre-tested schedule. The Commission on Agricultural Cost and Price(CACP) was adopted to analysed the data. Findings revealed that rice production is a profitableventure in the study area. The net income over cost C3 was found to be N45,176.15 per hectarewhile the input-output ratio had Cost A1 (1:2.65) as the highest ratio and cost C3 (1:1.67) as thelowest ratio. The cost of production in naira per hectare was also worked out with cots A1N2, 497.229 as the lowest cost while cost C3 N3,960.226 as the highest cost. The study suggeststhat government should provide modern farm machineries to ease the cost of farm labour andintroduce district wise distribution of fertilizers and agro-chemicals to rice farmers in the studyarea.&nbsp

    Implications of Elevated Temperature due to Changing Climate on Cotton Crop

     Due to anthropogenic forces which poses climate change the temperature is increasing as per IPCCreports (Newman, 2016). In general, temperature influences the duration of a crop's growing period. Thereforeit may control the phenological development and water requirements indirectly. Increasing temperature alsoincreases photosynthesis and other metabolic processes, until a crop type specific temperature optimum isreached. Cotton in its native state grows as a perennial shrub in a semi-arid habitat, and thus requires warmtemperatures. Cotton despite being is a thermophilic plant and originating from hot does not necessarily yieldhigher at excessively high temperatures. Thus we can say it has a negative correlation between harvested yieldand high temperature as observed in model studies. In this study effect of long-term averages of weatherparameters such as temperature precipitation and sunshine i.e. the climatology of Hisar region on cotton crop isstudied. For simulation of model three Bt-cotton crop varieties Pancham-541, RCH-791, SP-7007for threesowing dates have been selected. Further to examine the impact increase in temperature due to climate change1ºC has been added at three time steps in the model upon the observed climatology of the study region. From thesimulated output eight parameters has been taken to assess the impact. These parameters includes Anthesis date,Evapotranspiration (mm), Tops Nitrogen at Maturity (kg/ha), Days to harvest, Leaf Area Index (Maximum),Maturity date, Harvest index and Harvested yield (kg/ha). Model output depicts that Anthesis date,Evapotranspiration, Tops Nitrogen at Maturity (kg/ha), Leaf Area Index (Maximum), Maturity date and Days toharvest has increasing trend with increasing temperature. On the other hand Harvest index and Harvested yield(kg/ha) has decreasing trend with increasing temperature for all the cultivars. This shows that with increasingtemperature if derived due to climate change the crop yield may decrease

    Digit Ratio: An Indicator to the World Within

    The ratio of index finger length to ring finger length known as digit ratio (2D:4D) is an indicator of prenatal androgenexposure. The 2D:4D ratio is sexually dimorphic, with average male 2D:4D lesser than average female 2D:4D. It recentlywas suggested that 2D:4D is negatively correlated with prenatal testosterone and positively correlated with prenatal estrogen.It is argued that high prenatal testosterone and low estrogen (indicated by low 2D:4D) favours the male foetus and lowprenatal testosterone and high estrogen (indicated by high 2D:4D) favours the female foetus. According to a broad array ofstudies, this ratio, determined by the level of prenatal testosterone, can predict a diversity of personality traits. In particular,individuals whose index finger is almost as long--or even longer--than is their ring finger are more likely to displaycharacteristics that are characteristic of females. Even their writing tends to be more feminine in style. But usually, notalways, these observations apply to the right hand only. Even within each sex, 2D:4D has been found to be linked with avariety of physical and psychological characteristics. For example, men with lower 2D:4D are more aggressive, moreathletic, less feminine, and more musically talented. Women with lower 2D:4D have higher waist-to-hip ratio, are moremasculine, and are more athletic. Among both men and women, 2D:4D is correlated positively with verbal intelligence andagreeableness, and negatively with numerical intelligence and physical fitness.     Antagonistic Effect of Trichoderma Isolates against the Fusarium Wilt of Bael under Soil Condition

     The investigation entitled “Biological Management of Nursery Diseases (Root rot and wilt) of Bael (Aeglemarmelos Correa)” was conducted in the Narendra University of Agriculture and Technology, Kumarganj, Faizabadduring 2012-2013. At nursery stage about 35-40% seedlings of Bael (Aegle marmelos Correa) were died due to root rotand wilt. The disease is highly prevalent during rainy season under warm and high humidity as well as low sunshinehours (4-6 hrs/day) that further aggravated the situation. The affected seedlings may come out on soil surface but failedto grew further. The root rot affected seedlings remained alive for sometimes but under highly disease conducivecondition none of the seedlings survived beyond one month. They either toppled over or become necrotic black and finallydied. The population of F. solani infested soil could be minimized by treating the soil with T. harzianum, T. virens and T.viride. Trichodema harzianum and T. virens grew very fast. Beside T. harzianum parasitized over F. solani, resulted intolyses of its hyphae. The antagonistic activity of T. viride happened due to its yellow pigments secreted in the rhizosphere.The yellow coloured metabolite was toxic and killed the hyphae of F. solani. Thereafter, T. viride grew over the spacecleared by its metabolite on the basis of the results of the present experiment. Application of T. viride and T. virens aspreventive measures and that of T. harzianum as curative one may be suggested

    Efficacy of Cultural filtrate of Trichoderma Isolates on the Fusarium Wilt of Bael

    Percent reduction of F. solani colony over the control 7 days after treatment were 74.88, 69.68 and72.42 in T. harzianum, T. viride and T. virens treated soil, respectively. But a reverse picture was noticedafter 21 days of the treatment. When per cent reduction in population of F. solani in T. harzianum, T. virideand T. virens treated soil were 72.59, 77.62 and 74.57 in a separate experiment. Efficacy of 7 days old culturefiltrates of the Trichoderma species in reducing population of F. solani in soil was also tested. Per centreduction of F. solani 3 days after the treatment with culture filtrates of T. harzianum, T. viride and T. virenswere 42.70, 53.57 and 31.40, respectively.&nbsp
