Investigating the Differences in Ef (Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter) Varieties' Grain and Straw Yield and Straw Quality Attributes

Tef, scientifically known as Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter, is a native Ethiopian grain that is good for both humans and cattle. Over the course of two years, 35 different tef varieties were cultivated in two different areas of Ethiopia, along with a control variety, to study the differences in grain and straw production as well as straw quality attributes. Acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent lignin (ADL), metabolizable energy (ME), crude protein (CP), in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD), and straw yield (STY) were the parameters that were examined. The interaction between the variety of tef, the cultivation environment, and ME, CP, IVOMD, and CP were considerably (P < 0.01) impacted. Compared to Holetta, a high-altitude site, for both 2016 and 2015, the GY, CP, IVOMD, and ME characteristics performed better at mid-altitude in Debre Zeit (P < 0.01). Consistently, there were positive and statistically significant relationships found between GY and STY, CP, ME, and IVOMD, and NDF, ADF, and ADL). In contrast, a negative and statistically significant correlation was found between yield and quality attributes. This research also classified variations into four groups according to the quality of their straw, grain production, and overall performance; some varieties even outperformed the average in these categories. The current tef breeding approach mostly aims at improving grain output, thus it would be beneficial to promote varieties like Melko, which have greater straw yield and quality features, for immediate use as a dual-purpose variety or as a parental line to change this

    Sustainable Coastal Engineering

Coastal zones are highly dynamic environments that face significant threats from climate change, rising sea levels, and human activities. Sustainable coastal engineering seeks to develop methods and technologies that mitigate these impacts while promoting long-term environmental health, economic vitality, and resilience. This paper explores various sustainable coastal engineering practices, including nature-based solutions, integrated coastal zone management (ICZM), and innovative technologies aimed at addressing issues such as coastal erosion, flooding, and biodiversity loss. Case studies of successful applications in regions vulnerable to climate change provide insights into effective strategies. The role of policy, governance, and community involvement is also discussed as critical factors in ensuring the sustainability of coastal engineering solutions

    Smart pavements

Smart pavements represent an innovative evolution in infrastructure technology, integrating advanced materials, sensors, and communication systems to enhance road performance, safety, and environmental sustainability. These pavements can monitor traffic patterns, weather conditions, and structural integrity in real-time, providing valuable data to optimize maintenance and improve safety for road users. Additionally, they contribute to energy efficiency by harnessing solar energy or managing stormwater. Smart pavements can revolutionize urban planning and transportation systems by enabling dynamic responses to environmental conditions and user needs, ultimately leading to more sustainable, adaptive, and safer road networks

UTILIZATION OF DOLO-CHAR IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION

The increasing demand for sustainable and cost-effective road construction materials has led to the exploration of industrial byproducts as viable alternatives to conventional aggregates and binders. One such material gaining attention is Dolo-char, a byproduct of sponge iron production. Traditionally considered waste, Dolo-char has the potential to be repurposed in road construction, offering economic and environmental benefits. Roads experience significant wear and tear due to traffic loads, weather conditions, and material degradation, necessitating durable and resilient materials. The incorporation of Dolo-char into road construction materials presents an innovative solution, reducing dependence on natural resources while addressing waste management challenges.Dolo-char primarily consists of carbon, iron oxides, and residual lime, which can enhance the performance of asphalt and concrete mixtures. When processed and incorporated into bituminous or cementitious road materials, Dolo-char can improve mechanical properties such as compressive strength, rutting resistance, and durability. Studies have shown that blending Dolo-char with traditional aggregates can enhance load-bearing capacity, making roads more resistant to deformation and fatigue-related failures. Additionally, the porous nature of Dolo-char can contribute to improved drainage properties in road layers, reducing water accumulation and minimizing the risk of pothole formation. When used as a partial replacement for fine aggregates or fillers in asphalt and concrete mixtures, Dolo-char has demonstrated positive effects on the thermal stability and aging resistance of road materials. Research indicates that incorporating Dolo-char in bituminous mixes can enhance Marshall stability and reduce susceptibility to temperature variations, leading to longer-lasting road surfaces. Moreover, its pozzolanic activity can contribute to better bonding in cementitious applications, potentially improving the structural integrity of pavement layers. The economic benefits of Dolo-char utilization in road construction are also noteworthy. As an industrial byproduct, Dolo-char is readily available at minimal cost, reducing the financial burden associated with raw material procurement. By diverting this waste from landfills, infrastructure projects can contribute to circular economy initiatives and promote sustainable construction practices. Furthermore, the environmental impact of Dolo-char usage is significant, as it mitigates the extraction of natural aggregates, reduces carbon emissions from waste disposal, and supports resource conservation.Despite its advantages, challenges such as variability in composition, potential leaching concerns, and optimization of mix designs must be addressed to maximize the effectiveness of Dolo-char in road construction. Ongoing research and field trials are crucial to establishing standardized guidelines for its incorporation into pavement systems. By leveraging Dolo-char as a sustainable alternative in road construction, the industry can move towards more eco-friendly and cost-efficient infrastructure solutions, aligning with global efforts to enhance resource utilization and environmental sustainability
