Sustainable Development of Rural Tourist Settlements in Serbia: Building A Better Future for All

    No full text
The accelerated development of humanity, i.e., all areas of human activity and especially those that have a negative effect on the nature of man and the environment, leads people to return to a preserved and undamaged environment through various activities, especially through recreation. The largest number of tourists in the world is generated by cities, so tourism mainly occurs as a product of the urban environment. Rural settlements, by contrast, are very weak generators of tourist demand, but they emerge as receptive areas that are able to meet the recreational and other needs of the urban population. Accordingly, the aim of the research is to highlight the problems of sustainable development in tourist settlements located in underdeveloped rural areas of Serbia. This work highlights the issues of rural tourism and leisure activities in underdeveloped parts of Serbia, with an emphasis on a pro-poor tourism strategy as a factor in the sustainable development of rural tourist resorts in Serbia

Will we have the same employees in hospitality after all? The impact of COVID-19 on employees' work attitudes and turnover intentions

    No full text
A crisis caused by COVID-19 pandemic affected the whole world leaving long-lasting effects on almost every aspect of human lives. The aim of this study was to test how different effects of COVID-19, expressed through job insecurity, employees' health complaints occurred during isolation, risk-taking behavior at workplace and changes in the organization, may impact work-related attitudes (job motivation and job satisfaction) and turnover intentions of the employees in hospitality industry. Based on the data collected from 624 hospitality workers from Serbia, the results indicated that job insecurity and changes in the organization were predictors of all outcomes, in a negative direction, while risk-taking behavior acted as a predictor of job satisfaction only, also in a negative direction. The significance of demographic characteristics, as control variables, showed that age and marital status had significant impact on job motivation and turnover intentions. The theoretical and practical implications were discussed

    Get PDF
The territory of the Republic of Serbia is vulnerable to various natural disasters, among which forest fires stand out. In relation with climate changes, the number of forest fires in Serbia has been increasing from year to year. Protected natural areas are especially endangered by wildfires. For Nature Park Golija, as the second largest in Serbia, with an area of 75,183 ha, and with MaB Reserve Golija-Studenica on part of its territory (53,804 ha), more attention should be paid in terms of forest fire mitigation. GIS and multi-criteria decision analysis are indispensable when it comes to spatial analysis for the purpose of natural disaster risk management. Index-based and fuzzy AHP methods were used, together with TOPSIS method for forest fire susceptibility zonation. Very high and high forest fire susceptibility zone were recorded on 26.85% (Forest Fire Susceptibility Index) and 25.75% (fuzzy AHP). The additional support for forest fire prevention is realized through an additional Internet of Thing (IoT)-based sensor network that enables the continuous collection of local meteorological and environmental data, which enables low-cost and reliable real-time fire risk assessment and detection and the improved long-term and short-term forest fire susceptibility assessment. Obtained results can be applied for adequate forest fire risk management, improvement of the monitoring, and early warning systems in the Republic of Serbia, but are also important for relevant authorities at national, regional, and local level, which will be able to coordinate and intervene in a case of emergency events

FPGA implementation of fuzzy medical decision support system for disc hernia diagnosis

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to create a decision support system for disc hernia diagnostics based on real measurements of foot force values from sensors and fuzzy logic, as well as to implement the system on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The results show that the created fuzzy logic system had the 92.8% accuracy for pre-operational diagnosis and very high match between the Matlab and FPGA output (94.2% match for pre-operational condition, and 100% match for the post-operational and after physical therapy conditions). Interestingly enough, our system is also able to detect improvements in patient condition after the surgery and physical therapy. The main benefit of using FPGAs in this study is to create an inexpensive, portable expert system for real time acquisition, processing and providing the objective recommendation for disc hernia diagnosis and tracking the condition improvement

    Get PDF
Glavni cilj jeste identifikovanje razlika i sličnosti u strateškim pravcima razvoja zemalja koje su članice Evropske Unije (Republika Hrvatska) i ostalih zemalja kojima je članstvo u Evropskoj Uniji jedno od glavnih prioriteta (Republika Srbija, Crna Gora, Severna Makedonija i Republika Srpska).Urednici: Dejan Filipović, Velimir Šećerov, Dejan S. New Landscape Conceptualization as a Guideline for Spatial Development - a Case Study from Serbian Spatial Planning Practice

    No full text
This paper is focused on clarification of the basic principles for the establishment of an innovative approach in the field of landscape research through its application in spatial planning documents in Serbia. The key question is: how the practice of considering landscape character could direct new spatial arrangements, based on the development of strategic spatial planning documents? The paper describes the results of analysis undertaken during the development of the “Spatial plan for a special-purpose area The Cultural Landscape of Sremski Karlovci”. The landscape character assessment was the main methodology taken to define value of landscape character as the starting point for defining border of cultural landscape and “representative landscape units”, as well as for guiding sustainable landuse management which is opposed to the traditional approach of land-use decision making. Based on landscape character value, this research provides the elements for creating a different conceptual framework for spatial planning in Serbia which is one of the most effective model of the implementation of the European Landscape Convention

From conformance to performance? A comparative analysis of the European Union territorial policy trends in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina

    No full text
As several Western Balkans countries aspire to become members of the European Union (EU) in the (near) future, it is interesting to explore to what extent EU territorial trends are adopted in both the official national regulations and spatial planning practice. To do so, we: 1) screen EU territorial policies to elucidate the trends and principles of territorial development, 2) analyse the contents of spatial plans in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and 3) compare the practical appli-cation of the principles such as decentralisation, diffusion of power, subsidiarity, multi-actorship, synergy, transparency, citizen participation, coordinated action (among various disciplinary bodies), and holistic strategies. The findings show the ineffectiveness of declaratively adopted EU territorial trends against place-based territorial policy approaches
