Benchmark solutions of the free vibration of simply supported laminated composite plates
Due to the high specific strength and stiffness, laminated composite plates, especially mid-plane symmetric laminated composite plates, are frequently used as structural component in aeronautical and aerospace engineering. Since obtaining analytic solutions are difficult even for simply supported mid-plane symmetric laminated composite plates, numerical methods have to be used to obtain approximate solutions. To evaluate various numerical methods, benchmark solutions are needed. In this article, highly accurate frequencies of simply supported angle-ply mid-plane symmetric laminated composite plates with two sets of equivalent material properties are obtained by the modified differential quadrature method and presented to serve as the benchmark solutions
Numerical study on axial vibration of water-lubricated small thrust bearing considering grooved pad
This paper presents the effect of pad with transverse grooves on the axial vibration for a small thrust bearing under water lubricated. Due to downsizing of electronic devices, the component part such as the thrust bearing in the micro fabrication becomes small size. Therefore, to study the characteristic of vibration for a small thrust bearing under water lubricated is significant for high precision machining. The hydrodynamic lubrication model was used to predict the water film thickness, the water pressure profile, and the bearing stiffness. A finite difference method (FDM) and a Newton-Raphson scheme are employed to achieve numerical results, i.e. the water pressure distributions, the water lubricating film thicknesses and the bearing stiffness under the variation of groove depths. The grooved shape of pads, that examined in this paper, was elliptical shape. The equation of motion under the impulse excitation considering in the axial vibration for a small thrust bearing was solved by using a Runge-Kutta method. The numerical results showed that the use of elliptical transverse grooves is effective to increases the fluid film stiffness and the maximum displacement in the axial vibration is able to be reduced
A torsional vibration damper based on a serial viscoelastic coupling of its seismic mass
The design of dynamic torsional vibration dampers of piston internal combustion engines is generally based on the principle of a dynamic damper with one degree of freedom in which the coupling of the seismic mass of the damper to the basic dynamic system is realized by a two-parameter parallel rheological model. With known realizations of this principle, it is usually difficult to achieve the optimum value of the respective damper parameters determined from the computational models, which is particularly true for optimal damping values. A dynamic torsional damper, based on the series arrangement principle of the elastic and damping element, offers better design options to achieve the optimum parameters of both the elastic and damping elements
On the use of signal smoothness estimates and signal similarity in bearing fault detection
The concepts of signal smoothness and signal similarity are very common in digital signal processing. In this paper, both concepts have been explored in the ball bearing failure diagnostics, where the bearing fault, bearing inner race and outer race faults were analysed. It was found out that the signal smoothness and the signal similarity estimates might reduce computational tolerance in the vibro-acoustic signal analysis. On this basis, numerous experiments have been carried out to demonstrate usefulness of the above-mentioned estimates (as useful parameters of signal features) in the signal quality analysis
Chaos analysis of ship rolling motion in stochastic beam seas
In this paper, the chaotic motion of ship roll in stochastic beam seas, which is regarded as a bounded noise is investigated in detail. The stochastic Melnikov approach is applied to the model and the criterion for the chaos in the mean-square sense is derived. The chaotic thresholds of noise parameters obtained by means of the stochastic Melnikov process are verified by the numerical safe basin. Besides of the factors of noise disturbances, the effects of the other parameters in the system on safe basin are also discussed systematically. The varieties of coefficients of the restoring moment can also induce the erosion of safe basin and lead to the occurrence of the chaos. On the other hand, the increase of damping coefficients can enhance the safe domain of ship sailing
Transverse failure modes and control strategies of super long-span cable-stayed bridge under extreme earthquake
This work is focused on the failure modes and control strategies of a trial designed super long-span cable-stayed bridge (Abbr. CSB) with a main span of 1400 m under various seismic intensities, exploring the key characteristic of the failure modes of super high tower. Then several control strategies, such as the use of conventional viscous fluid dampers (Abbr. VFDs) and a new combination strategy comprising sacrificial inelastic links and conventional VFDs, are presented for the failure modes improvement and the seismic damage mitigation of the CSB under extreme earthquake (PGA = 1.0 g). It is found that the super high tower experiences an unexpected failure mode with double plastic hinges that shows a new characteristic on the tower failure in the transverse direction, which is different from that of the short- and medium-span cable-stayed bridge during earthquake excitation. Whereas the piers show a typical and expected flexural failure mode with only one plastic hinge in the transverse direction. Although conventional control strategies using the optimal VFDs can help to significantly reduce the seismic damage of the CSB, they cannot entirely make the tower satisfy seismic control targets. It is also observed that the new combination strategy can successfully improve the failure mode and seismic damage of the CSB that satisfies seismic control targets, the effects of proposed combination strategy on the CSB are superior to those of the convention control strategy with the optimal VFDs
A novel intelligent fault diagnosis method of rotating machinery based on deep learning and PSO-SVM
A novel intelligent fault diagnosis method based on deep learning and particle swarm optimization support vectors machine (PSO-SVM) is proposed. The method uses deep learning neural network (DNN) to extract fault features automatically, and then uses support vector machine to classify diagnose faults based on extracted features. DNN consists of a stack of denoising autoencoders. Through pre-training and fine-tuning of DNN, features of input parameters can be extracted automatically. This paper uses particle swarm optimization algorithm to select the best parameters for SVM. The extracted features from multiple hidden layers of DNN are used as the input of PSO-SVM. Experimental data is derived from the data of rolling bearing test platform of West University. The results demonstrate that deep learning can automatically extract fault feature, which removes the need for manual feature selection, various signal processing technologies and diagnosis experience, and improves the efficiency of fault feature extraction. Under the condition of small sample size, combining the features of the multiple hidden layers as the input into the PSO-SVM can significantly increase the accuracy of fault diagnosis
Effects of misalignment on the nonlinear dynamics of a two-shaft rotor-bearing-gear coupling system with rub-impact fault
In rotor-bearing system, the misalignment can lead to secondary faults, such as the rub-impact fault. How the development of misalignment could affect the rub-impact force and other dynamic responses is important for the vibration control and fault diagnosis of rotor system. In this paper, a mathematical model of a two-shaft rotor-bearing- gear coupling system is established. The model is validated through the misaligned force of gear coupling, the supporting force of the lubricated ball bearing and the whole rotor response. To overcome the limit of traditional approaches and further dig out fault characteristics, the time-frequency method is introduced to analyze the dynamic response from both the time and frequency domains points of view. It is found the misalignment effect on rotor dynamic responses is mainly focused in high rotating speed range. The development of misalignment has an obvious adverse effect on the rotor stability. Some intermittent components in low frequency range due to the occurrence and development of misalignment can be found affecting the rotor stability at low speed range, and the high frequency rub-impact components can be found responsible for the unstable state of rotor
Vibration characteristics and modal analysis of a grinding machine
The machine industry has undergone several developments in the past years, and reducing the cost and time required for machine designing is important. In this study, the vibration characteristics of a precision grinding machine were obtained through experimental modal analysis and finite element analysis. The experimental modal analysis employed single point excitation, and the equipment used to determine the frequency response of the grinding machine comprised a hammer, an accelerometer, and a spectrum analyzer. In addition, the resonance frequency, damping factor, and modal shape of the grinding machine were determined. The natural frequency, modal shape, and interface stiffness were determined through finite element analysis. Finally, the theoretical model and the experimental modal analysis models were compared, and get closer to the actual situation of a model to conduct several times analysis. Thus, this paper presents a reliable and convenient method to study the characteristics of machine tools; this method can reduce unnecessary costs and find structural weaknesses in machine designs for improvement
Dynamical analysis of a thin-walled rectangular plate with preload force
Finite element (FE) models are utilized to investigate the influence of preload force and the stress stiffening on the dynamic characteristics of a thin-walled rectangular plate. An experimental platform system is established to obtain the dynamic characteristics of the specimen using the resonance method. Simulation and experimental results agree well with each other, which validates the effectiveness of the FE model. The results show that the preload force not only improves the overall dynamic performances of the thin-walled plate but also contributes to the local stiffness of the loading position because of the generation of stress
