    Get PDF
The aim of the paper is to study the effects of an accelerometer mass on natural frequency of a cantilever beam of AZ61 magnesium alloy. The fundamental natural frequency of the beam is determined experimentally using vibration analyzer OROS-34 for different location of accelerometer mass on the beam. Vibration in the beam is generated by a lightweight hand hammer. Analytical formulation is done to calculate modal properties of a mass loaded beam. Further, the problem is simulated using ANSYS and the simulated results are compared with the experimental and analytical results

    Get PDF
Solar energy is one of the widely used non-conventional form of energy. photo voltaic panels generate electricity and heat by absorbing solar irradiation. The performance of solar panels depends on several factors like dust accumulation on the surface, solar cell temperature, angle of inclination etc., To perform the cleaning action efficiently a semi-automatic cleaning mechanism has been designed and fabricated. The designed experimental setup consists of several nozzles attached on top of the solar panels and water is supplied to each nozzle using a Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) pipe frame connected to an AC motor operated with a time switch. Water flows on the surface of photo voltaic module, thus heat exchange takes place. One dimensional heat transfer analysis is performed and the results are compared to the experimental results for validation. The experiments were conducted at Bennett University, Greater Noida dated 9 October to 16 October. An increase in efficiency by 1.28 % to 2.65 % was reported in this experimental study

Comparative study for modal analysis of circular plates with various cutouts and end conditions

    Get PDF
The applicational use of structural members in engineering and technology may take the form of a circular plate, for such members it becomes important to predict the vibrational characteristics when operated closer to resonance phenomena. In addition to, the effect of the cutout in the circular plate has a significant effect on modal characteristics. The part of the research work entitled in this paper emphasizes on the modal analysis of a circular plate with clamped boundary condition determined by the characteristics equation and mode shapes of the plate using FEM. The effects of inclusion of cut-out on the vibrational characteristics are discussed. The subject of the analysis was a circular plate considered with certain modifications i.e. free circular plate without cutout clamped on the outer periphery, circular plate with cut-out clamped on the outer periphery, circular plate with cutout clamped on the outer and inner periphery. The methodology applied to conventional material based circular plate is extended to Glass epoxy circular plate with the same set of modifications. The values of natural frequencies for various cases are tabulated and corresponding mode shapes are illustrated

Automatic condition monitoring of electromechanical system based on MCSA, spectral kurtosis and SOM neural network

    Get PDF
Condition monitoring and fault diagnosis play the most important role in industrial applications. The gearbox system is an essential component of mechanical system in fault identification and classification domains. In this paper, we propose a new technique which is based on the Fast-Kurtogram method and Self Organizing Map (SOM) neural network to automatically diagnose two localized gear tooth faults: a pitting and a crack. These faults could have very different diagnostics; however, the existing diagnostic techniques only indicate the presence of local tooth faults without being able to differentiate between a pitting and a crack. With the aim to automatically diagnose these two faults, a dynamic model of an electromechanical system which is a simple stage gearbox with and without defect driven by a three phase induction machine is proposed, which makes it possible to simulate the effect of pitting and crack faults on the induction stator current signal. The simulated motor current signal is then analyzed by using a Fast-Kurtogram method. Self-organizing map (SOM) neural network is subsequently used to develop an automatic diagnostic system. This method is suitable for differentiating between a pitting and a crack fault

Damage identification of bridge structure based on frequency domain decomposition and strain mode

    Get PDF
Because it is difficult to determine the degree and location of damage to bridge structures under environmental excitation, a new method combining frequency domain decomposition and strain mode identification for bridge structure damage assessment is proposed and the related identification principle is derived. General variations in the strain mode parameters of different reinforced concrete beam damage states are accordingly studied under ambient excitation. The results show that the proposed strain mode identification method based on frequency domain decomposition has good anti-noise performance and can identify the strain mode parameters of a structure relying solely on the strain response information of the structure, even under strong background noise. The mutation of the strain mode was effectively used to determine the damage condition of reinforced concrete beams, and the adaptability, feasibility, and reliability of the proposed method for modal parameter and damage identification of reinforced concrete beams under environmental excitation were verified

Damage detection in concrete gravity dams using signal processing algorithms based on earthquake vibrations

    Get PDF
In structural engineering, damage detection in concrete gravity dams (CGDS) is a practical problem. Dam destruction can have severe financial consequences and may even lead to fatalities. Therefore, structural health monitoring in advance is crucial. In this regard, a well-known CGD, namely the Pine Flat Dam, has been chosen for the Finite Element Modeling. In this paper, damage is induced in the dam neck through elasticity modulus reduction by 40 % and 80 %. In addition, after applying Northridge earthquake, the acceleration in structure nodes for intact and damaged cases are recorded in vector formats. Using various methods, such as Discrete-time Fourier Transform (DTFT), Wavelet transform and Wiener transform, the differences between these two signals are investigated. The standard deviation (S.D.) of variations is chosen as the performance metric and is applied to the signal amplitude between intact and damage observations/signals. The reason why several signal processing algorithms are used is finding an approach which shows more clearly the differences caused by the destruction. This is evaluated via S.D. values for different algorithms. The results confirm the superiority of DTFT over other given algorithms. DTFT has a negligible outperformance (approximately zero dB) with respect to the Wavelet transform in both the crest and the lower nodes of the dam. This rate for DTFT and Wavelet is 10dB higher than that of Wiener and 35 dB in comparison with the simple amplitude difference. Moreover, the detection thresholds for the given methods are compared, and it is verified that the DTFT and Wavelet indicate the best performance

Comparative study for material effect on stress behaviourial characteristics of rectangular plate

    Get PDF
The circular cutout is considered as a typical source of stress concentrations in rectangular plate type structures. The proper position of a cutout in a rectangular plate can be significantly affected by the choice of material, cutout size, and various end conditions which are relative to the externally applied force. The research work entitled in this paper deals with the finite element formulation applied to a plate made with isotropic and laminated plates subjected to uniform pressure with various end conditions. The vicinity of stress distribution for the rectangular plate made of these two materials with and without the effect of circular cutouts is discussed. The accuracy of the solution verified with the available literature, and from the comparison, a fairly good agreement seen between the Finite element formulations in this paper with previously available results

Design of vibration standard device based on random comparison method

    Get PDF
In order to meet the needs for aircraft vibration transducer and measurement equipment to be calibrated at the job site, it is necessary to design a compact, dynamic and functional vibration standard device. This paper introduces a vibration standard device based on random comparison method. The structure and working principle of software and hardware are described in detail. Unlike the calibration requirements under laboratory conditions, on-site calibration requires that the calibration process be more consistent with the actual operating conditions. A random vibration comparison calibration method using random signals as excitation sources is designed. The vibration standard device can be maneuvered from the laboratory environment to the aircraft maintenance site. It has been proved measurement uncertainty of the system is 1.0 % (k= 2) by the method of control accuracy

Effect of change in position of particle dampers on wind turbine blade for vibration suppression

    Get PDF
Wind turbine energy minimizes due to vibration of blade. In this research we focus on vibration suppression by using particle damping technique. Containers are used for fill the particles and mounted on the blade. As vibration of blade increases, it increases the movement of containers along with particles this brings particle to particle and particle to container wall collision takes place which results to energy loss. In this study we use four different positions for mounting containers, firstly on all four different positions we mount containers simultaneously and take three readings for three different ball sizes respectively, keeping 50 % fill constant in all readings. Then we reduce one container among four and take the readings. Repeat this procedure up to single container. Compare with damping results with without damping results and finding out optimum locations for mounting of dampers
