Impact on auxetic and metal foams
Using the finite element method, we investigate the elasto-plastic impact of a rigid sphere on a half-space of auxetic and metal foams. The validity of the Hertz theory for elastic impacts is investigated for both positive and negative Poisson’s ratio. For elastic impacts, the results from Hertz theory are accurate within 20 % with the finite element simulations. The plasticity is modeled using the Deshpande-Fleck metal foam yield criterion. This yield criterion allows for plastic compressibility and can also accommodate materials having a negative Poisson’s ratio. The elasto-plastic simulations reveal that the coefficient of restitution decreases as the impact velocity is increased. The coefficient of restitution is also least for materials having a zero plastic Poisson’s ratio. Our study suggests for maximum energy dissipation the plastic Poisson’s ratio should be close to zero
Numerical analysis of single grit grinding on aluminum workpiece
Grinding is a finishing process used in almost every industry. The purpose of this research is to study the effects of grinding on aluminum. Finite Element Method (FEM) is used to numerically simulate grinding by using microscale modeling. It is found that though under grinding, stress mises developed do not exceed yield stress. The force variation and displacement parameters have been correspondingly discussed. The effects of grinding on the workpiece with and without lubrication
Damage detection in sluice hoist beams subject to excitation at resonance frequency band based on local primary frequency
Cracks of sluice hoist beams due to the load and aging of the material threaten the safety of sluice structural system. As the one of the main methods of damage detection, the non-destructive detection method based on natural frequency is still insensitive to local damage. Therefore, this paper proposes a method for hoist beams damage detection driven by resonance frequency band based on local primary frequency in the local mode. Firstly, the possibility of damage detection based on local primary frequency is discussed and the procedure of determining resonance frequency band is explained. Then the damage identification index based on the change ratio of local primary frequency is provided. Finally, numerical results demonstrate the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed method. The proposed method can provide reference for damage detection of hoist beams and health monitoring of sluice structural system
Parametric design and analysis of a mortar base plate
In order to improve the efficiency of designing and analyzing a mortar base plate, parametric technology has been applied to the design and analysis of the base plate. By conducting characteristic analysis of the base plate, critical design parameters extracted have been driven as characteristics to perform secondary development on UG, so that the base plate could be automatically modeled in three dimensions. Meanwhile, Python has also been applied in the secondary development of Abaqus, so as to realize the automatic finite element modeling of the base plate. After conducting parametric analysis on the model established, sensitivities of design variables of the base plate have been analyzed using an approximate model in combination with the sample designed by the optimal Latin hypercube approach. Moreover, parametric optimization carrying out on results of sensitivity analysis could give feedback to parametric design for guiding parameter values of design variables to improve the design qualit
Intelligent glove for suppression of resting tremor in Parkinson’s disease
One of the significant symptoms in Parkinson’s disease is resting tremor. Resting tremor occurs when the muscle is relaxed, causing the limb to shake. Rhythmic muscle movement of the patients commonly happens within the range of 4 Hz to 6 Hz. Thus, reducing this type of tremor will help improve patients’ quality of life. In this paper, to suppress resting tremors, an intelligent glove was designed utilizing the concepts of vibrations and gyro effect. A rotating brass disc attached to the glove creates a gyroscopic effect of the smart glove. Therefore, the disc will do their utmost to stay upright and counter any input forces instantaneously by providing the counterforce. A reduction of more than 50 % with the intelligent glove is also shown
Natural frequency analysis of a functionally graded rotor system using three-dimensional finite element method
Three-dimensional Finite Element (FE) analysis has been carried out using ANSYS software to study the natural frequencies of functionally graded (FG) rotor system. Temperature and position-dependent material properties of the FG shaft system are considered to be graded in the radial direction. Power-law with the nonlinear temperature distribution (NLTD) and exponential law with exponential temperature distribution (ETD) have been used to model the material gradation and temperature distribution. Rotor systems of two different FG materials, namely Stainless Steel-ZrO2 and Stainless Steel-Al2O3 have been studied. Python codes have been developed to generate ANSYS macros that apply the material properties. Simply supported FG shaft and FG rotor system supported on bearings have been analyzed in the current work. The results show the influence of different power-law coefficients, different material and material laws on the natural frequencies of the rotor system. The effect of these parameters on whirl frequencies has also been studied for FG rotor systems
Dynamic stiffness method for free vibration analysis of thin functionally graded rectangular plates
In this present work, the dynamic stiffness method (DSM) is used to analyze the free vibration of a thin functionally graded rectangular plate. Classical plate theory (CPT) is used to develop the dynamic stiffness matrix of a functionally graded material (FGM) plate. For free vibration analysis, the natural frequencies of the functionally graded material plate are estimated by using DSM with Wittrick-Williams algorithm for different aspect ratios and different boundary conditions. The present research compared the DSM natural frequencies results with those available in the published literature
Dynamic pressure on lock gate structure coupled with fluid
The effect of fluid on the dynamic pressure distribution of a rectangular lock gate structure subjected to external harmonic ground acceleration is studied. The fluid is assumed to be inviscid and incompressible, having an irrotational flow. Pressure for fluid domain and displacement for lock gate are considered as nodal variables in the finite element formulation. The interaction of coupled problem is maintained by transferring acceleration of the lock gate to fluid and pressure of the fluid to lock gate. Mindlin’s plate theory is used to formulate the lock gate. The Laplace equation is solved using Fourier half range cosine series expansion to truncate the far boundary nearer to the lock gate. The time dependent forced vibration equations are solved by using Newmark-beta time integration method
A study on the behavior of structures based on the rocking motion of rigid cores involving pre-compressed springs and viscous dampers
To create a partial rocking mode in a building structure during an earthquake, two or more rigid cores with joint connection to the foundation, and capable of moving in the two main directions of the building’s plan, can be used. A rigid core with a hinge connection to the foundation is essentially unstable. However, two rigid cores can be connected together by springs and dampers in certain floors to create a stable structure. At the same time, the structure shows a rocking behavior in which the building moves almost as a rigid body. In fact, the effects of all modes other than the fundamental one is almost eliminated. The use of yielding or friction dampers leads to permanent displacements in the structure in an earthquake. Therefore, in this study pre-compressed springs were employed, which do not create any permanent displacement. The pre-compressed springs were used to provide the structure with initial stiffness and prevent any displacement by small forces. Since an elastic spring does not have any damping, it was decided to control the structural displacements by viscous dampers in certain floors. Finally, the proposed structure underwent static and time-history analyses in plastic range, and the results suggested the desirable behavior of the proposed structure. In particular, there were no permanent displacements left in the structure after the earthquake
DEM simulation and experimental study on the screening process of elliptical vibration mechanical systems
For an elliptical vibration system, the vibration parameters seriously affect conveying speed and sieving efficiency of the materials. In addition, considering the lack of studies about the elliptical vibration machine, we applied the discrete element method to simulate and analyze the elliptical vibration screening process in this paper. A vibration screening model is particularly based on the purpose of our research to fundamentally demonstrate the novel relationships among the conveying speed, sieving efficiency and vibration parameters of the materials. And the sieving experiment of typical materials is additionally carried out on the same simulation system. This paper analyzes the influence rule of vibration parameters on conveying speed and sieving efficiency of the materials during the elliptical vibration screening process by virtue of comprehensively comparing the results of experimental study coupled with simulation research. Consequently, we can throw up the optimal vibration screening parameters to guarantee high sieving efficiency and large throughput of the screening machine at the same time. The screening test carried out in this paper lays the experimental foundation for the study of the mechanism of elliptical vibration screening machine and the study of materials screening characteristics by combining the conclusions of DEM simulation analysis of lots of materials. It provides not only a basis for selecting the vibration parameters of the actual working process of the screening machine, but also data support based on the experiment and simulation for the study of the sieving mechanism of elliptical vibration systems. For screening mechanism, this is a significant progress which will affect future design and manufacture of elliptical vibration machines. Furthermore, the conclusions drawn from this research can help us study and explain better the screening process of other vibration machinery
