CO2 geological storage prospects of Lithuania – update
The CO2 geological storage assessment in the Cambrian saline aquifers in west Lithuania is considerably improved by 3D seismic survey of the Gargždai Elevation and Syderiai Uplift. The CO2 storage capacity of the Syderiai site is assessed as large as 56.7 Mt (area 62 km2) owing to the high reservoir properties (average porosity 17 % and permeability 400 mD) of the Middle Cambrian saline aquifer of 50 m thick and 1458-1508 m deep. The tectonic uplift is controlled by the large-scale Telšiai strike-slip fault. The Syderiai site was initially considered as the potential UGS site. The acreage of the Gargždai Elevation, comprising six depleting oil fields, is assessed 133 km2 and the storage volume is evaluated 31.3 Mt. The main challenging parameter is a poor average porosity (7 %) and fractured type of reservoir (permeability about 10 mD) about 70 m thick and 2200 m deep. A residual oil zone (ROZ) assessment suggests are very high protentional for CO2 combination in west Lithuania which is the only prospective site known in the Baltic region of this kind
Influence of wheel web structure on the tight-curve short-pitch corrugation of metro
Short-pitch corrugation is a common phenomenon that occurs on tight-curve rails in metro systems. However, the contributing factors of this problem are still not fully understood, and effective control measures have yet to be developed. In this study, we investigated the contributing factors of short-pitch corrugation on tight-curve rails in metro systems using the complex eigenvalue analysis method according to the theory of friction-induced vibration. We also explored control measures for short-pitch corrugation from the perspective of optimizing the wheel web structure. Our results indicate that friction-induced vibration is the primary contributing factor to short-pitch corrugation in the wheel-rail system. The shape of the web structure significantly affects rail corrugation, and compared to the straight web structure, unstable vibrations are more pronounced in the S-shape web structure. In contrast, the bow web structure can significantly improve the system stability of the wheel-rail interaction, and the greater the web curvature, the better the inhibitory effect. The wheel deformation under contact force varies with the web curvature, and when the axial deformation of the wheel extends toward the inner rail, the wheel-rail system no longer exhibits unstable vibrations. Conversely, when the axial deformation of the wheel extends toward the outer rail, the greater the deformation, the greater the instability of the wheel-rail system
Mechanism of time-delay feedback control of suspension damping with an annular vibration-absorbing structure
With the aim of enhancing both the ride comfort and the safety of the vehicle, we propose a new type of suspension with an annular vibration-absorbing structure, and establish a 3-DOF 1/4 vehicle model. The structure parameters and time-delay feedback control parameters are determined by particle swarm optimization algorithms, which take the root mean values of body acceleration, suspension dynamic deflection, and tire dynamic displacement as their optimization objectives. We analyze the stability of the suspension control system to ensure the stability of the time-delay control system through the Routh-Hurwitz stability criterion, characteristic root method, and stability switching method. Then, we compare and analyze the response characteristics of conventional suspension, new suspension without time-delay feedback control, and new suspension with time-delay feedback control under simple harmonic excitation and random excitation. The results show that the new suspension with time-delay feedback control has a significant damping effect on the body under the premise of ensuring the stability of the system
Research on lightweight pedestrian detection based on improved YOLOv5
Aiming at the problems of low detection accuracy and the large size of the pedestrian detection algorithm, to improve the edge intelligent recognition capability of the terminal, this paper proposes a lightweight pedestrian detection scheme based on the improved YOLOv5. In this paper, the algorithm first takes the original YOLOv5 as the basic framework and uses the Ghost Bottleneck module to replace the C3 module in the original YOLOv5 network to reduce the number of parameters, eliminate redundant features, and obtain a more lightweight model. Then the attention mechanism CBAM module is added to improve the feature extraction capability and detection accuracy of the algorithm. After experimental verification, the improved lightweight YOLOv5 algorithm significantly reduces the model size and computational cost while guaranteeing accuracy, which is suitable for deployment in edge devices
The analysis of the destabilizing motion of a hyperbolic cooling tower during demolition blasting
The destabilizing motion characteristics of the hyperbolic cooling tower in demolition blasting are thoroughly investigated through the establishment of a numerical simulation calculation model, leading to the following conclusions regarding its destabilizing motion. The tensile-compression elastic-plastic model, which possesses the characteristics of parameter modification function and independence from unit size, can more effectively capture the mechanical properties of concrete materials and find better application in the simulation and calculation research of reinforced concrete structures. The self-oscillation frequency check and collapse morphological analysis are employed to validate the accuracy of the simulation calculation model for hyperbolic cooling towers, as well as to assess the rationality of parameters in the tensile-compression elastic-plastic model. The collapse of a cooling tower induces flexural deformation in the lateral wall, tensile disturbance in the upper and middle sections of the cylinder, and compressive disturbance in the vertical cross-section. The cylinder body has incurred damage as a result of the tower wall’s front end striking the ground at the directional window position on the front side of the throat, leading to a significant extrusion deformation issue. The buckling deformation in the central and lower sections of the rear wall propagated towards the back side of the tower wall upon reaching the ground, ultimately resulting in an “inverted V-shaped” damage along the buckling deformation line. The research findings hold significant relevance for future endeavors
Public perceptions of CCUS in Central and Eastern Europe – implications for community engagement
Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is emerging as a subject of major interest for EU climate policy due to their potential role in avoiding hard-to-abate CO2 emissions, as well as to lead to “negative emissions” through direct air capture or bioenergy with carbon capture and storage. Despite CCUS technologies being deployed since the 1970s, their widespread implementation is still challenged by a range of factors, including policy inertia, high costs, and relative novelty in the public discourse. In particular, as CCUS emerges slowly into the realm of public and political debate, opinions on these technologies and associated projects are easily changeable and affected by a range of factors, which make concerted public and community engagement extremely important for deploying them where they matter most. The Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) region is characterized by a higher-than-average economic dependence on heavy industry, old assets and infrastructure, and a high occurrence of regions where the transition to climate neutrality will have a significant impact on local economies, employment, and social welfare [1]. CCUS could play an important role in decarbonizing the heavy industry sectors of the region, particularly given the potentially significant storage capabilities of countries such as Romania and Poland, as well as emerging storage potential in the Black Sea and Eastern Mediterranean Sea. However, climate policy in these jurisdictions is sluggish, and there is a general failure to approach CCUS in a systematic way, with targeted application to sectors where it can have the highest impact, such as cement and oil refining. As a result, the public debate around CCUS is practically non-existent, and where public opinions do emerge, they may be significantly influenced by the context of a particular project and generate significant resistance based on the relationship with project developers, the amplification of perceived risks, and the lack of appropriate explanations of costs, benefits and risks. This in turn can lead to a reticence of political stakeholders to commit to deploying CCUS, causing the public debate to further stagnate and creating a vicious circle whereby opportunities to familiarize the public with these technologies (well in advance of their deployment) are missed. In order to deploy CCUS at pace and scale, as part of the catching-up climate policies of CEE countries, public perception of CCUS must be thoroughly researched and developed into appropriate guidelines for community engagement by project developers. There is experience in the region – the feasibility study for Romania’s planned Getica CCS demonstrator (subsequently abandoned) included comprehensive research into the perceptions of local communities, and a toolkit for communications around CCUS by project developers. Similarly, learnings from Poland’s failed Belchatow CCS project can serve to re-assess the state of public opinion on CCS, and how the local and national-level contexts for CCUS perceptions interact. The CEE region has significant potential for deploying CCUS, and public perception must be an integral part of planning as the region moves into the key decade of 2030-2040 for implementing large-scale projects
Fault diagnosis method for hydro-power plants with Bi-LSTM knowledge graph aided by attention scheme
In hydro-power systems, the fault of equipment is an important potential threat for the safe production of electricity. Therefore, the automation and intelligence of fault diagnosis becomes the popular issue in the research on hydro-power system. In this paper, a knowledge graph-based method is put forth to diagnose faults occurred in hydro-power systems, since the knowledge graph can store structured and unstructured data for better fault diagnosis and intelligently search the reasons of the faults. First, we model the knowledge graph for hydro-power plants, where the rational path for the fault reason is formulated. Then, the bi-directional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) with conditional random field (CRF) is used to extract the entities and relations to the given documents, which record the phenomenon and reasons for the occurred faults. Moreover, the attention scheme is employed in the Bi-LSTM to weigh the closer relationships to improve the diagnosis accuracy. An automatic diagnosis algorithm is developed to improve the diagnosing efficiency by constructing rational paths, with which directive and in-directive factors for occurring faults can be traced. Simulation results reveal that the intelligent search method with a knowledge graph can effectively find the reason, locate the position, and provide useful suggestions for the occurred faults
A mathematical model and microcontroller-based method for measuring dielectric permittivity and discharge characteristics with Arduino ATmega 328: a case study in a physics laboratory
A microcontroller-based measuring instrument and a new mathematical model are used to investigate capacitor permittivity and dielectric materials' charge-discharge characteristics. In this study, a prototype capacitive permittivity measurement apparatus for dielectric materials was carefully developed using an Arduino microcontroller, a resistor, and a capacitor. The experimental setup comprises a capacitor-resistor circuit, wherein a 5-volt power supply sourced from the microcontroller interfaces with a computer. During the charging process, a comprehensive evaluation of model-data alignment was performed, yielding values of 0.54252156, 0.9951, and 111.2508701 for the sum of squares error (SSE), the coefficient of determination (R-squared), and the sum of squares total (SST), respectively. Similarly, the analysis extended to the discharging process, unveiling values of 5.10174756, 0.962805684, and 137.1647082 for SSE, R-squared, and SST, respectively. These findings confirm the accuracy of the microcontroller that was programmed by incorporating a model in precisely measuring the relative permittivity of dielectric materials and capacitance values, with an R-squared value above 0.95 following capacitor literature benchmarks. The novelty of this study is that this configuration enabled the precise assessment of both permittivity and the charge-discharge characteristics of the dielectric materials within the capacitor. This methodology made it possible to accurately measure the permittivity and charge-discharge characteristics of dielectric materials within a capacitor. The scientific significance of this research lies in its ability to provide a carefully developed instrument capable of investigating the permittivity of dielectric materials and capacitor capacitance measurements. Scholars, international engineering communities, and academics can use this technological breakthrough to advance research into dielectric material properties and capacitor characteristics
Analysis of hydrocarbon solvents for the removal of various types of asphalt, resin and paraffin deposits
In this work the physical-chemical properties of asphaltene-resin-paraffin deposits are studied. Their component composition was determined. The results obtained are the basis for the selection of effective solvents and the choice of the method of removing deposits from oil reservoirs. Two hydrocarbon solvents with the brands “TSK А” and “TSK B” were tested. The solvent ability of solvents was tested
Decarbonisation options of existing thermal power plant burning natural gas
Nowadays power industry faces deepest crises ever with unprecedented prices shocks and climate challenges at the same time. From one hand we realise the need of energy transformation of power industry towards more sustainable future with climate neutral technologies. From the other hand it become obvious that this change could not happen immediately and transition period is needed with some fossil fuel technology still playing an important role as a back-up for renewable energy sources. The biggest question what is the best and cost-efficient way to decarbonise existing thermal power generation. We try to address it on the example of existing combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant fuelled by natural gas. Clearly the following possible options were identified: 1) replacement of natural gas with alternative gases, such as green hydrogen, bio or synthetic methane, 2) carbon capture and underground storage (CCS) in geological formations, 3) carbon capture, liquefaction and export, 4) carbon capture and utilisation (CCU). US giant General Electric in its publication “Decarbonizing gas turbines through carbon capture” is considering similar options for decarbonising of gas turbines. They divide it into two approaches: 1) pre-combustion by using a zero or carbon neutral fuels, such as hydrogen, synthetic methane, biofuels or ammonia and 2) post-combustion by removing carbon from the plant exhaust, using liquid or solid sorbents or oxy-fuel cycles. In this publication we try to compare these different options, despite they are not clearly comparable. For the analysis we take natural gas fired CCGT plant Riga TPP-2 in Latvia with installed capacity of 881 MW (in condensing mode)
