A novel approach to Hurst analysis of motor vibration data in aging processes
Determining age in motors and rotating machinery in general is a serious question. Using the vibration signals collected during motor aging is challenging due to nonlinear and non-stationary nature of these signals. This paper presents a study on applicability of Hurst analysis in motor vibration data collected in an artificial aging process, which at first seems to suggest inapplicability of Hurst Exponents in motor age determinations. Conclusions drawn from the straightforward application of Hurst exponent calculation are used to propose a novel method for Hurst analysis of such signals, named Higuchi-Hurst-Hilbert Vibration Decomposition (H³VD), using Higuchi’s algorithm for Hurst exponent calculation and Feldman’s Hilbert Vibration Decomposition overcoming the shortcomings of the original approach and delivering results that were expected based on previous research on frequency domain features of motor vibration in artificial aging processes. Features of this approach have been presented on both Fractional Gaussian noise model and the real vibration data. Non-accelerated bearing aging vibration data was used to demonstrate practical applicability of this new method
Diagnostics of reciprocating compressor fault based on a new envelope algorithm of empirical mode decomposition
Empirical mode decomposition (EMD), a self-adaptive time-frequency analysis methodology, is particularly suitable for processing the nonlinear and non-stationary time series, which can decompose a complicated signal into a series of intrinsic mode functions. Although it has the attractive features, the approach to construct the envelop-line in EMD has obvious shortcomings. A suggested improvement to EMD by adopting the optimized rational Hermite interpolation is proposed in this paper. In the proposed method, it adopts rational Hermite interpolation to compute the envelope-line, which has a shape controlling parameter compared with the cubic Hermite interpolation. In the meantime, one parameter determining criterion is introduced to guarantee the shape controlling parameter selection performs optimally. Besides the empirical envelope demodulation (EED) is introduced and utilized to analyze the IMFs derived from the improved EMD method. Hence, a new time-frequency method based on the optimized rational Hermite-based EMD combined with EED is proposed and the effectiveness was validated by the numerical simulations and an application to the reciprocating compressor fault diagnosis. The contributions of this paper are three aspects: Firstly, the definition of the best envelope is non-existent, some light is given about which envelope maybe better in this paper. Secondly, the optimal shape controlling parameter selection combined with rational Hermite interpolation is developed, leading to the significant performance enhancement. Thirdly, little research has been carried out on the fault diagnosis of the reciprocating compressor using EMD, the proposed method is a good start
Contact characteristics of orthogonal face gear with spur involute pinion
The proposed mechanism of face gear shaping is applied to develop the mathematical model of face gears. Based on the developed mathematical model of the face gear, computer graph of the face gear set is created. Then, the transmission errors of the face gear pairs under various assembly errors are investigated based on the constraints theory of six-degree-of-freedom rigid body motion. The assembly errors are finally obtained by applying the TCA (tooth contact analysis) method. Also, the developed computer simulation programs quantitatively evaluate the influence of assembly errors including offset and angular position errors on the position of contact path and TE (transmission error) in a complete mesh cycle. Besides, the loaded tooth contact characteristics are investigated by using the FEM (finite element method) to study the stick-slip trajectories of the surfaces. The results are illustrated with numerical examples
Studies of exit pressure recovery coefficient and its effects on dynamic characteristics of annular water seals
Rotordynamic instability and vibration due to fluid forces within annular seals are well-known phenomenons that can occur in pumps as well as in turbines. Traditional theoretical predictions for the fluid reaction forces and equivalent dynamic characteristics of annular seals are computationally efficient compared with CFD method. Exit pressure loss coefficient is one of the main factors that influence the precisions of theoretical analysis. In this paper, exit pressure recovery coefficients at three different static eccentricity ratios under different operating conditions are investigated using CFD method. The numerical result shows that exit coefficient increases exponentially with the ratio of circumferential velocity to axial velocity at all these three eccentricity ratios. Besides, an analysis method for annular plain seals with the introduction of exit pressure recovery coefficient varied with operating conditions is proposed based on the previous analysis results. Comparisons are made between theoretical predictions calculated by the two methods with and without exit coefficient over a wide range of pressure drops and running speeds. The result suggests that damping coefficients are much more sensitive to the change of the exit boundary conditions compared to stiffness coefficients. In addition, the new prediction results of cross-coupled stiffness and direct damping coefficient show relatively smooth change with the increase of velocity ratio than the previous results

The description of the device with the electrical sensitive glue to fix components of electronic devices (capacitors, resistors, chips) at their trials on harmonic and shock loads with the aid of shaker table is presented. Based on the polarization forces of interaction of the filler particles in the structure of the electrical glue we have performed a simulation and calculation of the limiting values of fixing forces of the component with the electrode of the mounting devices. Parameters of the electric field corresponding to the utmost full transmission of vibrations to the component are determined
Simulation and stability of multi-port DC-DC converter
In this paper, the simulation and stability of multi-port DC-DC converter will be presented. Traditional DC-DC converter topologies interface two power terminals: a source and a load. The construction of diverse and flexible power management and distribution systems with such topologies is governed by a tight compromise between converter count, efficiency, and control complexity. The DC-DC converter may be considered as an advanced environment-friendly electronic conversion system, since it is a greenhouse emission eliminator. By utilizing the advancement of these renewable energy sources, we minimize the use of fossil fuel and thus contribute to a cleaner and pollution-free environment. Finally, comparison between the averaged model and the actual switching converter model is been studied
Fracture toughness prediction of eutectic ceramic composite considering damage effect and transformation toughening
The toughness of eutectic ceramic composites is obtained by multiple toughening mechanisms involving crack-bridging and pull-out of rod-shaped eutectics, as well as stress-induced transformation toughening. In the loading procedure, damage will emerge in the rod-shaped eutectic. Firstly, the damage variables are defined by the microstructure of rod-shaped eutectic with aligned nano/micro- fibers. The maximum strain criterion is used for determining the loading function. According to the attenuation characteristic of eutectic rigidity, the critical fracture stress of the damage rod-shaped eutectic is obtained by damage variable maximizing. Secondly, we imagine the bridging load carried by the damage rod-shaped eutectics in the crack wake to produce a crack-closing force. The latter reduces the stress intensity in front of the crack. The pull-out work is given by the integral of the frictional force over the pull-out length. Bridging toughening mechanism and pull-out toughening mechanism of damage rod-shaped eutectics are constructed. Thirdly, defining a parabola transformation yield function, the transformation plastic strain increment is gotten by transformation plastic potential function. The screening impact of transformation particles for mixed-mode I-II crack is gained. And lastly, based on the crack-bridging and pull-out of rod-shaped eutectics, as well as stress-induced transformation toughening mechanisms, the added toughness scale with the inherent matrix toughness, the theoretical formula of fracture toughness of the eutectic ceramics composite is determined. The result shows that the fracture toughness is dependent on the aspect ratio of rod-shaped eutectic: the fracture toughness is minimum as the aspect ratio is equal to 0.3 and maximizing when the aspect ratio is equal to 14. The damages inside eutectics enlarge the incremental range of variation of the fracture toughness. The transformation particles exert a slight influence on the fracture toughness due to its less content
Effect of grinding wheel on the dynamic performance of high-speed spindle system with an improved FE model
The grinding wheel is a key factor which should be considered in the process of predicting the dynamic performance of the high-speed spindle system. Currently, most research is mainly focuses on shaft and bearing using Timoshenko’s beam and Jones’ bearing model. In this research, considering the effect of grinding wheel on the dynamic behavior of the high-speed motorized spindle system, a dynamic model of spindle system has been established by utilizing the finite element method (FEM). The model is improved by optimizing the relevant parameters of spindle system and validated by measuring FRF using impact hammer test. The reported results are well matched (maximum error is 5 %). Using the improved model, the effect of grinding wheel on the critical speeds, mode shapes, centrifugal force and gyroscopic effects of spindle system are analyzed. In addition, the impact of different diameters, materials and fixed methods of grinding wheel on the dynamic property of spindle system are also carried out. The result shows the affect of grinding wheel and design guideline of the spindle and grinding wheel
Health assessment of rotary machinery based on integrated feature selection and Gaussian mixed model
Bearing failure is the most common failure mode of all rotary machinery failures, and can interrupt the production in a plant causing unscheduled downtime and production losses. A bearing failure also has the potential to damage machinery causing soaring machinery repair and/or replacement costs. In order to prevent unexpected bearing failure, a health assessment method is proposed in this paper. It employs an integrated feature selection approach and Gaussian mixture model (GMM). Firstly, the integrated feature selection approach, which combines empirical mode decomposition (EMD), singular value decomposition (SVD) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA), processes nonlinear and non-stationary vibration signals of a bearing and extracts features for health assessment. Then, GMM is utilized to evaluate and track the health degradation of the bearing in terms of confidence values (CV). This method, which is notable for bearing health tracking and detect the defect at its incipient stage, can be used without the need for failure datasets in applications. Finally, the feasibility and efficiency of this method was validated by two datasets of different bearing experiments
Development of nanostructured Al/SiO2 composite film for vibroisolation applications
This paper presents the investigation of surface morphology, wetting and chemical properties of the nanocomposite Al/SiO2 film, which can be used as a shock generated vibration isolator for microelectromechanical devices. AFM analysis shows that two-step prepared Al/SiO2 composite film has regular nanoisland type surface topography provided by SiO2 nanospheres. EDS analysis confirms that SiO2 nanospheres are well distributed on the substrate. Carbon found in the composition of composite film can be attributed to the residuals of organic compounds used for the preparation of SiO2 nanospheres. FTIR analysis confirms formation of the Si-O and Si-OH functional groups and the presence of –CH3 stretching group can be related to the improved non-wetting behavior of the composite
