Future Circular Collider Feasibility Study Report: Volume 3 Civil Engineering, Implementation and Sustainability
Volume 3 of the FCC Feasibility Report presents studies related to civil engineering, the development of a project implementation scenario, and environmental and sustainability aspects. The report details the iterative improvements made to the civil engineering concepts since 2018, taking into account subsurface conditions, accelerator and experiment requirements, and territorial considerations. It outlines a technically feasible and economically viable civil engineering configuration that serves as the baseline for detailed subsurface investigations, construction design, cost estimation, and project implementation planning. Additionally, the report highlights ongoing subsurface investigations in key areas to support the development of an improved 3D subsurface model of the region. The report describes the development of the project scenario based on the ‘avoid-reduce-compensate’ iterative optimisation approach. The reference scenario balances optimal physics performance with territorial compatibility, implementation risks, and costs. Environmental field investigations covering almost 600 hectares of terrain—including numerous urban, economic, social, and technical aspects—confirmed the project’s technical feasibility and contributed to the preparation of essential input documents for the formal project authorisation phase. The summary also highlights the initiation of public dialogue as part of the authorisation process. The results of a comprehensive socio-economic impact assessment, which included significant environmental effects, are presented. Even under the most conservative and stringent conditions, a positive benefit-cost ratio for the FCC-ee is obtained. Obesity-Related Disorders in Turkiye: A Multi Center, Retrospective, Cross-Sectional Analysis from the OBREDI-TR Study
Objectives: Obesity is a significant public health concern, as it is associated with the development of numerous chronic diseases. The prevalence of obesity and attendant diseases has been increasing over recent years. This study attempted to ascertain the frequency of chronic diseases in obese patients in Turkiye for the first time on this scale. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted, with patients admitted to the internal medicine outpatient clinics or obesity centers between December 2023 and December 2024 included in this study. Participants were recruited from seven regions, 20 provinces, and 28 centers, and the inclusion criteria were met by those aged 18 years and over with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg per square meter (kg/m(2)) or above. Their status, with respect to chronic diseases, and their anthropometric parameters were documented. Results: The total number of patients was 10,121, with a mean age of 45.2 +/- 13.92. Of these, 7222 (71.35%) were female. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), hypertension (HT), dyslipidemia (DL), coronary artery disease (CAD), obstructive pulmonary disease (OPD), obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), and fatty liver disease (FLD) was found to be 35.01%, 78.19%, 12.37%, 10.32%, 5.88%, and 75.12%, respectively. A subsequent analysis of the prevalence of these diseases by region revealed a statistically significant variation between regions (p < 0.001 for all regions). Investigation of Causing Microorganisms and Antimicrobial Sensitivity Patterns in Diabetic Foot Wounds|Diyabetik Ayak Yaralarında Etken Mikroorganizmaların ve Antimikrobiyal Duyarlılık Paternlerinin Araştırılması
Aim: Diabetic foot is the clinical term describing a series of diabetes-related lower extremity complications, such as ulceration, infection, and gangrene. This study aimed to prospectively investigate the causative aerobic bacteria in diabetic foot ulcer samples, as well as anaerobic bacteria and fungi, which are thought to play an important role in diabetic foot infections. Additionally, the antimicrobial susceptibility of the causative microorganisms obtained from the cultures will be investigated. Methods: Fifty-nine samples were collected from 50 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). The BD Phoenix TM automated system was used for species-level identification of microorganisms and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. The antimicrobial susceptibility of anaerobic microorganisms was tested using the gradient test method. Results: Gram-negative aerobic bacteria were found to be the most common agents (65%) in diabetic foot infections, with 65% being multidrug-resistant. Staphylococcus aureus was identified as the most common cause of monomicrobial infections, with a methicillin-resistant rate (MRSA) of 27%. Vancomycin, teicoplanin, and linezolid were the most effective antibiotics against Gram-positive agents, while ceftolozane/tazobactam, piperacillin/tazobactam, meropenem, ertapenem, colistin, and amikacin were the most effective against Gram-negative agents. Conclusions: The high prevalence of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative agents highlights the importance of prudent antibiotic use. Considering DM is 80% preventable through lifestyle changes, increasing public awareness about healthy living is crucial. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved

In this study, the results obtained by using the Red Fox method, a new metaheuristic optimization method, and the Newton Raphson method, which is one of the numerical methods, in finding the solutions of nonlinear systems of equations, are compared and these comparative analyses are evaluated and recommendations are presented
Factors associated with lymphedema volume in patients with unilateral lower extremity lymphedema
Objective We aimed to investigate demographic and clinical characteristics associated with lymphedema volume in this patient population. Methods This was a single centre, cross-sectional study. Eighty-six patients with unilateral lower extremity lymphedema were included. The dependent variable was lymphedema volume. The independent variables were age, body mass index, gender, employment status, smoking status, duration of lymphedema, history of infection, type of lymphedema, and the interactions between history of infection and smoking status and between history of infection and type of lymphedema. Results The interactions between history of infection and smoking status (B = 25.04, 95% CI [8.87, 41.22], p .05). Conclusions In patients with unilateral lower extremity lymphedema, smokers or patients with primary lymphedema tend to have higher lymphedema volume when they experience an infection. Employed patients exhibit lower lymphedema volume compared to non-employed patients. Age, body mass index, gender, and duration of lymphedema are not associated with lymphedema volume
Interaction Activity of Metal-Free Phthalocyanine Compound Bearing Tetra -(2-(N-2'-Cyanoethyl)aminoethylsulfanyl) Units with DNA
The phthalocyanine having 4-(2-(N-2'-cyanoethyl)aminoethylsulfanyl) group had been reported earlier in the literature. In this current studying, DNA binding activity of 1Pc phthalocyanine bearing 4-(2-(N-2'-cyanoethyl)aminoethylsulfanyl units was examined spectroscopically via elctronic absoption, fluorescence titration, melting point profile, electrophoresis and viscosity methods. The interaction activity of 1Pc compound was examined at differing concentrations. UV/Vis spectrometer, viscosity, fluorescence spectroscopy and thermal melting temperature confirmed that 1Pc binds to the DNA. The Kb of 1Pc is also estimated via UV/Vis titration and Kb of 1Pc was computed as 2.1394 x 106 M-1. The Kb value demonstrated that 1Pc reacts with DNA by an intercalative mechanism. Alongside this research, the mechanism by which the compound binds to DNA was investigated by determining Tm. The Tm of DNA + 1Pc complex was identified as 74.31. This data confirmed that 1Pc binds to DNA intercalatively. All the results obtained from the used methods demonstrated that 1Pc phthalocyanine compound has an efficient DNA interaction activity and 1Pc phthalocyanine compound interacts with DNA via an intercalative mechanism. As a result, the compound may be a therapeutic agent due to its DNA interaction property. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved
Küresel Ekonomik Politika Belirsizliğine Karşı Sektörel Tepkilerin Zamanla Değişimi: Borsa İstanbul Üzerine DCC-GARCH Analizi
Amaç – Bu çalışma, küresel ekonomik politika belirsizliğinin (Economic Policy Uncertainty – EPU) Borsa İstanbul’daki sektörel etkilerini, zamana yayılan dinamik bir çerçevede incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. ABD merkezli EPU şoklarının Türkiye gibi gelişmekte olan piyasalarda yalnızca gösterge endeks değil, farklı sektörler üzerinde de farklı yoğunluklarda ve dönemsel olarak değişken tepkiler yarattığı hipotezinden hareketle, sektörel bazlı kırılganlık yapılarının ortaya konulması hedeflenmiştir. Yöntem – Çalışmada, 2010 Ocak – 2025 Mart dönemine ait aylık veriler kullanılarak BIST 100 endeksi ile birlikte sekiz sektörel endeksin (bankacılık, sanayi, hizmet, teknoloji, elektrik, tekstil, makine-eşya ve metal ana sanayi) ABD EPU endeksiyle ilişkileri analiz edilmiştir. Zamana göre değişen korelasyon yapılarının incelenebilmesi amacıyla çok değişkenli DCC-GARCH modeli uygulanmıştır. Modelin geçerlilik koşulları istatistiksel olarak sağlanmış; dinamik koşullu korelasyon katsayıları üzerinden sektörel tepkilerin yönü ve şiddeti dönemsel olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Bulgular – Elde edilen bulgulara göre, EPU ile sektör endeksleri arasındaki ilişkiler genel olarak negatif ve düşük düzeyli olup, korelasyonlar zaman içinde yön ve büyüklük açısından dalgalanma göstermektedir. Özellikle COVID-19 pandemisi gibi kriz dönemlerinde negatif korelasyonların mutlak değeri artmakta, sektörler EPU şoklarına farklı tepkiler vermektedir. Bankacılık sektörünün diğer sektörlerle yüksek düzeyde korelasyon içinde olduğu gözlenmiş, bu sektörün sistemik yapısı pekiştirilmiştir. Tartışma- Sonuçlar, EPU’nun Türkiye piyasalarında homojen bir etki yaratmadığını; sektörlerin faaliyet alanlarına ve dışa açıklık düzeylerine göre farklı kırılganlık yapılarına sahip olduğunu göstermektedir. Bu durum, politika yapıcılar açısından makro düzeyde tek tip müdahalelerin yetersiz kalabileceğine işaret etmekte; sektör bazlı, esnek ve dönemsel risk yönetim politikalarının gerekliliğini ortaya koymaktadır. Ayrıca, yatırım kararlarının da zamansal duyarlılığı yüksek portföy stratejileriyle desteklenmesi önerilmektedir
Investigation of thorium(IV) removal utilizing reduced graphene oxide-zinc oxide nanofibers via response surface methodology
This study examines the removal of Th(IV) ions from aqueous solutions using reduced graphene oxide-zinc oxide (rGO-ZnO) nanofibers synthesized via electrospinning. The nanofibers were characterized using XRD, SEM, FTIR, XPS, and zeta potential measurements. Response surface methodology optimized adsorption parameters, including pH, temperature, Th(IV) concentration, and adsorbent dosage. The Freundlich isotherm indicated heterogeneous adsorption, and thermodynamic analysis revealed an endothermic process with enhanced efficiency at higher temperatures. The maximum adsorption capacity was 99.73 mg/g, demonstrating the high performance of rGO-ZnO nanofibers. Competitive adsorption studies demonstrated high selectivity for Th(IV), demonstrating the potential of rGO-ZnO nanofibers for radioactive wastewater treatment.Ege niversitesi [23492]; Ege University Scientific Research ProjectsThis work was financially supported by the Ege University Scientific Research Projects (Grant No. 23492)
COMPARISON OF RANDOM SACCADE TEST AND CLINICAL SACCADOMETRY TEST RESULTS OF HEALTHY ELDERLY AND YOUNG INDIVIDUALS
Introduction: The effects of aging on oculomotor functions and higher- level cognitive processes are increasingly being investigated, and saccadic eye movements are considered an important tool to evaluate these changes related to aging. The aim of our study is to compare the random saccade and clinical saccadometry test parameters of healthy young and elderly participants. Materials and Method: The study included two healthy adult groups, Group I (Young adults (18-30 years)) and Group II (Elderly adults (65-80 years)). Participants were administered random saccade test and prosaccade and antisaccade tests with the newly developed clinical saccadometry protocol, respectively. Results: A total of 71 participants were included in the study, 37 in group I and 34 in group II. Random saccade latency in group I was determined to be significantly earlier compared to group II (p<0.05). Prosaccade and antisaccade latencies in group I were found to be earlier, while prosaccade and antisaccade directional error rates in group I was lower compared to group II (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of velocity and accuracy parameters. Conclusion: Our results suggest that age-related changes affect certain oculomotor functions, while some parameters remain stable in healthy aging. These findings enhance our understanding of oculomotor aging; however, further research is needed to assess their clinical relevance. Additionally, saccadometry may help elucidate cognitive and neural mechanisms in aging and serve as a potential tool for differential diagnosis
A Framework for Sustainability Performance Measurement Through Process Mining: Integration of GRI Metrics in Operational Processes
Organizations face significant challenges in measuring and enhancing sustainability performance across complex operational processes. Current assessment methods frequently lack granularity, real-time capability, and integration with operational data. This study addresses these gaps by developing a conceptual framework that integrates business process mining with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) metrics. The methodology incorporates environmental, social, and economic sustainability indicators into process mining techniques through systematic metric mapping and event log enrichment. The framework enables the extraction and analysis of sustainability performance data at the process level, creating detailed heat maps that visualize resource utilization, emissions, and waste generation. An application to a Purchase-to-Pay process case study demonstrates how process variants impact sustainability metrics differently. Delays increase emissions by 16.7%, while rework increases waste generation by 41.7%. The results identify specific process bottlenecks with high environmental impact and reveal critical misalignments between economic and environmental sustainability goals. This framework provides organizations with a standardized yet flexible approach to measuring sustainability performance, bridging the gap between high-level sustainability reporting and operational processes. It enables continuous monitoring, targeted interventions, and transparent reporting across diverse industry contexts
