    Blue LED Mediated C-H and N-H Insertion of Indoles into Aryldiazoesters and Iodonium Ylides: FH-HES Universities of Applied Sciences

    Herein we have discussed projects related to blue LED mediated C-H and N-H insertion reaction in indoles and related heterocycles with aryl diazoesters and iodonium ylides as sources of carbenes. Blue LED effectively facilitates these conversions and was optimized from the option of numerous other LED lights. No metal catalysts were required. The reactions provide formation of differently alkylated indoles, pyrroles and furans. Control experiments and DFT calculation were used to understand the mechanism of reactions. As an application compounds bearing azepino[4, 5-b]indole and spiropiperidino indole building blocks were synthesized from the alkylated products

    Surface Analysis by Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS): Principles and Applications from Swiss laboratories

    Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) extracts chemical, elemental, or isotopic information about a localized area of a solid target by performing mass spectrometry on secondary ions sputtered from its surface by the impact of a beam of charged particles. This primary beam sputters ionized atoms and small molecules (as well as many neutral particles) from the upper few nanometers of the sample surface. The physical basis of SIMS has been applied to a large range of applications utilizing instruments optimized with different types of mass analyzer, either dynamic SIMS with a double focusing mass spectrometer or static SIMS with a Time of Flight (TOF) analyzer.     Development of an Integrated Solution to Prevent Spring Frost Damage Using an Aqueous-based Insulating Foam: FH-HES Universities of Applied Sciences

    In recent years, agricultural crops experience unusually early onset of vegetation due to global warming, which can cause major frost damage with devastating effects on crop yields. To mitigate the risk of frost damage, an integrated solution was developed, consisting of an aqueous-based biocompatible foam and a portable foam applicator enabling wine cultivators to treat up to 1000 m2 of vineyards with one filling containing 10 L of foam. The foam is biocompatible, stable for several days and easily removed by rain. Foam application yielded an insulation efficiency of up to 1.5°C during spring frost nights for the buds covered by the foam when combined with an electrically heated wire. Moreover, it was observed that the foam also created a \u27mini greenhouse\u27 effect at positive temperatures during the days, which might be a positive side effect helping the plants to grow at this early stage of the year
