Visual Anatomy of an Article – Lessons Learned and Taught in Five Figures
To grow is to teach. In that spirit this article aims to teach best practice for visualizations and at the same time to highlight some of the harvest we could reap in our lab. Following figures recently published in one of our manuscripts, we demonstrate how creativity in figure making goes hand in hand with storytelling, a deepened understanding of the scientific work and an increase in lateral thinking inside the research avenue. We hope it will help to promote scientific visualizations as a useful, even if sometimes harsh, mirror to give new angles to the laboratory work

The Chemical Ecology of Benzoxazinoids
Benzoxazinoids are specialized metabolites that modulate plant physiology and plant interactions with their environment. In this review, we synthesize their multiple functions and ecological relevance. We first provide an overview of benzoxazinoid biosynthesis and highlight known regulatory elements involved in modulating their production. We then outline the role of benzoxazinoids in plant nutrition, vegetative and reproductive growth, and defense. We further summarize benzoxazinoid response to environmental factors such as temperature, drought, CO2, light, or nutrient levels and emphasize their potential role in tolerating abiotic stresses. Finally, we argue that benzoxazinoids act as a strong selective force on different trophic levels by shaping the plant interactions with microbes, insect herbivores, and competitor plants. Understanding the pivotal role of benzoxazinoids in plant biology is crucial to apprehend their impact on (agro)ecosystem functioning and diversity
Accelerator Mass Spectrometry: Ultra-sensitive Detection Technique of Long-lived Radionuclides
An introduction is given to accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) technology, to the fundamental measurement principles, and the physics aspects behind the design constrain of AMS instruments. This article shall give an overview on technical design constraints of AMS instrumentation, general ion optical principles, and nuclide specific problems. The historic development of AMS detection techniques is briefly summarized. The wide variety of applications connected to the AMS technology are not discussed
Bringing Functional Context to Emerging Proximity-mapping Proteomics Tools: Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology Highlights
If one considers chemical-biology toolsets that have had the greatest impact on numerous fields of life sciences over the most recent years, proximity-labeling tools, such as APEX, and Bio-ID arguably lead the way. This article reflects upon the current state-of-the-art and discusses key limitations underlying these emerging approaches, in particular, the limited functional knowledge they provide in understanding local proteomes / interactomes. This limitation is directly linked to the use of non-biologically- or non-pharmaceutically-relevant reactive intermediates in the course of covalently labeling the local proteomes. As such, these methods cannot report on specific functions of localized protein players, nor can they scrutinize whether the specific functions of such proteins/interactomes can be directly manipulated by pharmacologically-relevant small-molecule ligands. The latest data hint that precision localized electrophile delivery concept ushers a means to address this limitation with high spatiotemporal resolution, and ultimately, in relevant live animals
