    For the purpose of a high school thesis, we investigate with a student the possibility of detecting pyrophosphate with an indicator displacement assay using a copper-based inorganic complex. Our results indicate that real research with socially relevant results can be conducted at high school using very modest resources

    Recent advances in cooperative chemistry have shown the enormous potential of main group heterobimetallic complexes for the functionalisation of aromatic molecules. Going beyond main group metal chemistry, here we provide an overview on the synthesis, structure and reactivity of bimetallic complexes which combine an alkali-metal (AM= Li, Na) with a divalent earth-abundant transition metal (M= Mn, Fe, Co, Ni), containing the utility silyl amide HMDS (HMDS = N(SiMe3)2). Advancing the understanding on how cooperative effects operate in these bimetallic (ate) systems, selected examples of their applications in deprotonative metalation are also discussed with special emphasis on the constitution of the metalated intermediates

    Ultrafast X-ray Spectroscopy of Haem Proteins

    In this article we revisit our recent picosecond and femtosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) experiments, probing the ultrafast electronic and geometric evolution of photoexcited haem proteins, namely ferrous Nitrosyl Myoglobin (MbNO) and ferric Cytochrome c (Cyt c). We show through these two examples, combined with results from ultrafast optical spectroscopy, the universal behavior of the excited state dynamics of ferric and ferrous complexes. Regardless of the type of ligand, its dissociation or lack thereof, or the metal oxidation state, the photoexcited system relaxes through a cascade of excited spin states leading to formation of a high spin state, which in the case of the haem is a domed porphyrin

    Charge transfer and subsequent separation into free carriers are key processes that govern the efficiencies of third generation solar cell technologies based on donor-acceptor heterojunctions. As these processes typically occur on picosecond to femtosecond timescales, it is necessary to employ ultrafast spectroscopic techniques to further our understanding of these processes in order to provide vital information that can aide in furthering material design. Within the framework of the National Centre of Competence in Research “Molecular Ultrafast Science and Technology” (NCCR MUST), we have developed and utilized a suite of different ultrafast spectroscopic techniques to study charge generation, separation and recombination in a variety of small molecule based organic solar cells and lead halide perovskites. Here, we provide an overview of the main techniques used in our laboratory and the recent results obtained using these spectroscopic techniques
