This article examines the important and controversial topic of criminal background checks in employment. The topic of criminal background checks in employment is indeed an important as well as controversial and difficult one in the world of business today, as this hiring practice addresses core values in society. Yet these values can conflict. One societal value is the belief that if a criminal ex-offender has paid his or her “debt to society’; then opportunities, such as employment, should be made available to such a person, just like everyone else. Business owners and managers today, however, are concerned about having an efficient, effective, and ethical workforce. Thus, they are confronted with this dilemma of conflicting values and duties as well as the responsibility of doing the “right thing” in utilising criminal background checks in the hiring process. This article will first provide certain background information pertinent to the subject of criminal background checks in employment, particularly criminal conviction and incarceration rates for minorities, as well as discuss the prevalence of background checks in employment from an American perspective. The authors also examine the legal and practical implications of background checks; and finally draw conclusions for management from the aforementioned analysis

Findings: The results show that various bank-specific factors like lenient credit terms, monitoring, bank ownership, bank size, diversification of loans and credit assessment have significant effect on Non-Performing Loans, whereas interest has a weak significance on NPLs. Thus, banks should carefully look after these factors in order to control NPLs. The social factor like corruption has an insignificant effect on NPLs and political pressure has been an important factor in explaining the Non Performing Loans, especially in case of state owned banks. oai:ojs.pkp.sfu.ca:article/1The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the perceptions and understanding of teachers about ‘HRM practices both in public and private universities of Pakistan. Further, to explore how teachers associate the fairness of HR practices and other organizational factors, to the individual and organizational outcomes/performance. To this end, semi structured interviews were conducted to explore the perceptions of teachers about HR practices and performance. The findings of the interviews indicate that the existence of fairness of HR practices not only makes teachers work better (Teacher’s performance) but also generate a feeling of obligation to contribute towards organizational objectives (Exchange relationship). It is also evident from the interviewees’ account that among other organizational factors, organizational support is also one of the most critical factors which develops a feeling of commitment and satisfaction with the organization. However, in this context, the role of HR managers is very important not only in developing such HR systems that give employees a sense of organizational support but to implement those systems, practically giving them the signal of organizational justice. This study is unique as it is an attempt to integrate the perspective of teachers in HRM and performance literature which is a highly under-researched group in developing countries like Pakistan. This study can also help HR practitioners and educational policy makers in designing holistic and employee friendly policies if they want to be competitive and successful. The paper is concluded by discussing the limitations and implications of the study and future directions
