WHERE ARE WE? LECTURERS RECEPTIVITY OF SERVICE LEARNING IN NIGERIA

    Get PDF
Universities in Nigeria are established to perform three functions- teaching, research and community service. In spite of the establishment of several government and private-owned universities in Nigeria, most of these tertiary institutions have been criticised for not meeting the objectives of their establishment. This is because gaps between the gown and the town exist to the extent that the functionality of the education provided and the relevance of the certificates awarded to the society are being questioned. However, service learning was one of the ways used to bridge the gaps between the universities and communities in some of the developed and developing countries. This study therefore examined the extent to which lecturers incorporate service learning into teaching learning process. The study adopted mixed research design. Three research questions were posed for the study. Validated Service learning Structure Interview Schedule (r= 0.826) was administered to One hundred and fifty lecturers selected from three Universities in Southwest, Nigeria using multi stage sampling technique.  The data collected was analysed using descriptive statistic and content analysis. The results and implications of the findings were discussed while recommendations were also made.&nbsp

    Get PDF
This research was conducted to study the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Quality Assurance (QA) system in Thailand, its implementation, and its problems from 2000-2015 focusing primarily on the actors and their networking. Interviews were conducted with a purposeful sampling of participants who were from both the Office of the Vocational Education Commission (OVEC) and the colleges located in different regions of Thailand. Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) Framework was used as a theoretical reference. The research found that internal TVET QA board committee of the OVEC and the external TVET QA board committee of the Office for National Education Standards and Quality Assessment (ONESQA) were the main policy actors. All actions and contributions of the OVEC and the ONESQA officials and staff, including internal and external assessors, were recognized as a minor role comparing to those board committees of the OVEC and the ONESQA and people at the colleges. At the colleges, administrators and teachers were expected to implement TVET QA. However, their exact roles and duties were not well defined. Networking among the OVEC, the ONESQA, the colleges, and other supporting personnel was limited and focused solely on the assessment. Implementation of the TVET QA system was accepted as a viable means of quality development. However, there was speculation that the cost of implementing the system outweighed the benefits of it. There was concern over the absence of individual or institutional benefits. However, these concerns were not perceived as obstructive or problematic to the implementation of the TVET QA system. The implementation of the TVET QA system could have been greatly improved if the mechanisms by which information was shared, communication, and networking between actors were made more efficient

STIMULATING THE CREATION OF NEW PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGIES AS A FACTOR OF TECHNOLOGICAL MODERNIZATION

    Get PDF
The task of intensifying efforts to stimulate the process of creating advanced production technologies today is facing the modern economy. To this end, it is necessary to identify those factors that directly influence the creation of new national high technologies for production, regardless of regional specifics and regional policy and irrespective of technology imports. This was set as the research goal in this article. The method of least squares was used to construct an econometric model. A semi-logarithmic model was obtained after all recalculations that best corresponded to the stated research task and the selected criteria for selecting variables. As a result of the research, two factors were identified that are not related to each other, but have a direct impact on the creation of new national high production technologies - a patent issued for inventions and internal R&D expenditures. A purposeful impact on these factors will allow ensuring the technological modernization of the country's production base, the development of the scientific and technical potential of key sectors and sectors of the economy, and the growth of the country's intellectual resources. In the future, it is necessary to continue the factor analysis of the process of creating new technologies with the aim of activating and strengthening it. It is necessary to focus on stimulating the process of creating technologies that meet world standards and outrun them

TRANSFORMATIVE LIFE WRITINGTM: A FRAMEWORK FOR EMBEDDING STUDENT SOFT SKILLS? REFLECTIONS ON THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF DELIVERING A TRANSFORMATIVE CURRICULUM

    Get PDF
The objectives of this reflective paper are two-fold. Firstly it considers the increasing marketization of UK HE and the subsequent need to embed student soft skills explicitly within curricula. Secondly, it introduces Transformative Life WritingTM (TLW) (a framework of transformative learning) and considers its usefulness as a medium of developing student soft skills. The author uses an auto-ethnographic approach to reflect on her experiences, of delivering a transformative curriculum by using TLW – a system that can facilitate profound personal and professional development through specific life writing tools. The rewards and challenges of using this approach are discussed, including the educator’s use of self and other strategies to create a safe environment in which students maximise their engagement, own and explore their emotional intelligence. It is argued that Transformative Life Writing can be an effective tool in increasing student awareness of their soft skills, and in increasing their confidence and self-esteem. This is especially so for vulnerable students, or those who consider themselves as having difficulties in engaging inter-personally with others. However, the paper highlights the needs of HEI’s to appropriately support educators in its delivery, especially in relation to the emotional labour involved.&nbsp

    Get PDF
In last decades it is possible to observe popularity the concept of  well-being, which present meaningful and satisfied life for personality, special kind of attitude (to oneself and environment).  Well-being is often associated with physical vitality, mental activity, social support and satisfaction, self-realization both in personal and professional fields. It is considered as an alternative of negative way of thinking, destructive defensive mechanisms and inappropriate style of living.  Social well-being as significant part of well-being is connected with our relations with others and our feeling of security related to the environment we live in.  In my presentation I would like to present new contemporary approaches in studies of social well-being.  It is most related to the quality of our existence on social level, our capacity to find out own place in the environment independently of economic and social factors

The study aimed to determine the correlation between the engineering students’ confidence and performance in solid mensuration. The respondents of the study were 144 first-year engineering students who were selected from six different engineering degree courses through stratified random sampling. Data were collected using the (1) Confidence Level Survey (CLS), and (2) Final Departmental Exam (FDE). The results revealed a significant positive correlation between confidence in mathematics and performance in solid mensuration. A significant positive correlation between confidence and performance in solid mensuration was likewise found. Concerning correlations between students’ confidence and performance in different learning competencies in solid mensuration, no significant correlation was found between confidence and performance in determining properties of solid figures. Likewise, no significant correlation was found between the confidence and performance in solving lateral surface area. Similarly, no significant correlation was detected between the confidence and performance in solving the total surface area. Meanwhile, a positive significant correlation was yielded between the confidence and performance in solving volume. Moreover, a significant positive correlation was found between the confidence and performance in solving the other parts of solid figures. No significant correlation, however, was found between the confidence and performance in solving applied problems involving solid figures. The study concluded that the more confident the students were, the higher their performances in solid mensuration were. Conversely, less confident students were not certain in their abilities, thus resulted in the low performance in solid mensuration. Study’s limitations and future scope were also discussed.&nbsp

THE EXTENT OF CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN CURRICULUM AND SCIENCE CLASSIFICATIONS IN THE OTTOMAN STATE (16TH TO 19TH CENTURIES)*

    Get PDF
To develop an idea about the scientific developments in a particular field of a particular period, it is important to examine the types of sciences handled by scholars as well as the types of sciences involved in the school curriculum. This paper is trying to achieve an idea about the correspondence between the curriculum and the knowledge that had been produced in a specific field, which is Linguistics, and within specific era, which is from 16th to 19th century of the Ottomans. To do this, we are going to give a description about the school curriculum of language sciences and the widely accepted classification of language sciences among the Ottoman scholars, with a study on the extent of correspondence between the two. The examination of the correspondence between what the classification of sciences suggests and the ongoing application within schools would provide information about the Ottomans’ approach to Arabic language education and the general concept of linguistics at that era. It was seen that there was not a perfect correspondence between the fields of linguistic studies and the curriculum. One of the sub-outcomes of the research shows that the curriculum reflects only the language sciences which were defined as primary fields. To understand the reasons of this half-corresponding relation, similar studies about other eras need to be done
