THE IMPACT OF TEACHING TOPICAL STRUCTURE ANALYSIS ON WRITING PERFORMANCE OF TURKISH EFL SPEAKERS
As coherence is abstract in nature and there are very few practical techniques to teach it, this is considered to be one of the main problems that EFL students and teachers encounter. Although there is considerable research analyzing problems and difficulties with coherence among EFL learners, few practical pedagogical strategies have been suggested that can be used by teachers and understood by learners. Topical Structure Analysis is one of such techniques suggested and could be taught to EFL learners in order to help them improve their writing skills. This experimental study sheds light on the effects of teaching Topical Structure Analysis to Turkish university students who learn English as a foreign language. Two groups with four participants in each were used for this research. While one group was subjected to Topical Structure Analysis treatment (experimental group) for six weeks, the other received no such training. At the end of such a training period, both groups were assigned writing tasks which were analyzed for coherence. The results obtained indicate that a considerably positive effect of teaching Topical Structure Analysis was observed on the writings of experimental group, while the participants of the control group remained relatively poor performers of coherence in their writings.
THE APPLICATION OF IZIIGRID IN FACILITATING STUDENTS’ MASTERY OF THE GEOGRAPHIC GRID AMONG IN MALAYSIAN SECONDARY EDUCATION
The goal of this study was to examine the effectiveness of an innovative teaching material known as “IziiGrid” in enabling students to master geographic grid which was one of the most important topics that students at the age of 15 in secondary school. The study was conducted on an intact class of 20 students at a secondary school in KK Sabah. The teaching material “IziiGrid” was designed from two rulers embedded with patterns that allowed students to locate geographic grid on a map or globe precisely. The students were taught on how to use this material and their performance was evaluated through pre-test and post-test. The results showed that all 20 students improved their performance by achieving the highest grade in the post-test when initially 19 of them failed the test prior to the intervention. The findings implied that ‘IziiGrid” is effective in facilitating students’ mastery of geographic grid and deepen their understanding of its importance. Thus, this innovation can be used widely to teach this topic.
COMPARING SARTORIAL INDICES: COSTUME AND COURTLY CULTURE IN MING CHINA AND MUGHAL INDIA
Mughal India and Ming China, two of the greatest empires in medieval Asia, were successful in influencing the cultures of their respective territories and beyond. Although the two empires differed on many grounds like art, society, environment etc., there are nonetheless striking similarities between the two. These similarities are often overshadowed and neglected because of the differences. One such similarity is the clearly defined social hierarchy in the society, articulated explicitly in the functioning of the court, of both these empires. An individual’s attire in Ming China clearly reflected his/her position in the courtly hierarchy. Building on this, we tried to look at the role played by attire in establishing social rank in an equally powerful and hierarchical empire of the Mughals in India. Utilizing both primary as well as secondary sources for the purpose of this study, we have tried to bring out parallels in both the empires on practices related to attire or material possessions that led to the nurturing or establishment of social hierarchy. We could observe that, although attire facilitated the establishment of hierarchy in both the empires, the degree to which it affected the court varied. Our primary sources include contemporary political texts of the period such as “Ain-i-Akbari” and “Da Ming Hui Dian” along with the study of Mughal miniature paintings and classical portraits belonging to the Ming era. During the course of research, we also realized, little work has been done on the relation between attire and social hierarchy, especially in the context of these two empires. Existing scholarship on the subject is mostly by historians of art or fashion specifically. Thus, we believe our work will add to the emerging research on the topic, and takes into view a new perspective to clothing, which is not limited to certain streams of history
STUDENTS’ PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS AND DIFFERENCES IN THEIR LEARNING STYLE PREFERENCES IN PUBLIC COLLEGES OF EDUCATION IN THE CENTRAL-WESTERN ZONE OF GHANA
The study investigated the differences in learning style preferences of students of public Colleges of Education (CoEs) in the Central-Western Zone of Ghana based on their personal characteristics (sex, level of study and college setting), and how these personal characteristics influence the students’ choice of learning style preference. The study adopted the cross-sectional survey design. Purposive and random sampling techniques were used to sample 1,396 students from five public CoEs. Frequencies with percentages, independent samples t-test, and regression and ANOVA were used to analyse the data. Generally, a combination of visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learning styles were preferred by the students. Statistically significant differences in the learning style preferences of the students in terms of their sex and setting of college were observed. However, there were no statistically significant differences in the students’ learning style preferences based on their level of study. Again, a statistically significant positive influence of students’ demographic variables on their learning style preferences was established even though the influence was very small. It was concluded that most of the students prefer the use of more than one learning style, and so tutors must comprehend differentiated learning of their students in order to adopt different teaching and assessment techniques to suit the learning needs of the students. It was recommended among others that tutors should encourage students to adopt multiple learning styles and effective study habits to enhance their academic endeavours
ROLE OF RELIGIOUS ORIENTATION AND MENTAL HEALTH ON CRITICAL THINKING AMONG ACADEMICIANS
The present study investigated the role of religious orientation (intrinsic and extrinsic) and mental health (psychological well-being and psychological distress) on critical thinking among academicians. Moreover, the role of various variables such as difference in gender were also explored as part of this study. Scales used in this study were Age Universal Religious Orientation Scale (AUROS), Mental Health Inventory (MHI), and Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (WGCTA-S). Data was gathered by convenient sampling of 150 academicians (75 males, 75 females) within the age limit of 25-40 years from public and private universities in Islamabad. Data was tabulated and analyzed using SPSS. The results suggested that extrinsic religious orientation and psychological distress are positively correlated whereas extrinsic religious orientation and critical thinking are negatively correlated. The results also concluded that intrinsic religious orientation, psychological well-being and critical thinking are positively correlated. Results concluded that male professionals scored higher on religious orientation, mental health index and critical thinking as compared to their female counterparts (N=150)
EVALUATION THROUGH E-GOVERNANCE IN EDUCATION
This study focuses on the importance of monitoring and evaluation in education through E-governance especially in low-budgeted educational institutions of Punjab, Pakistan. In this era of fast-paced world, monitoring and evaluation system for education needs to be revamped in terms of digitization for effective and efficient progression, results and follow-up (Sabbagh et al, 2012). There are some reference documents/frameworks available in Pakistan to evaluate and monitor schools, however, there is near to none collaboration among the public and private sector schools with respect to evaluation in education through e-governance. So, there is a need to answer that how ready is the education sector for e-governance in terms of monitoring and evaluation. Moreover, how effective it will prove to be a support for the school leadership to make informed decisions. To answer these questions, this research is expedited with the help of Hertzberg’s Two Factor (Motivation and Hygiene factors) Theory of Motivation (1968). The idea of digitized monitoring and evaluation was piloted in a cluster of 20 private (Primary and Secondary) schools with the help of Android Phones. This Data base has already been designed to generate reports as per the required formats, levels, and forms. This research provides direction to future evaluators and emphasize on the significance of digitization in educational monitoring and evaluation. It certainly has major implications for educators, evaluators and for the policy makers to implement e-governance through digitized monitoring and evaluation. Moreover, this unique idea of digitized monitoring enabled us to create paper free environment, have standardized and central monitoring, unified reporting formats, data base record keeping (safe and secure), and, access of data for evaluators and School Management Team (SMT)
THE PLIGHT OF THE HOUSE-HELPS (DOMESTIC WORKERS) IN SELECTED ESTATES IN EASTLANDS AREA, NAIROBI COUNTY, KENYA
In Kenya, households in the middle class suburbs have increasing involvement of house-helps who in most cases take care of household chores. Moreover house helps have borne the brunt of being among the least paid in the country. Therefore, this paper focused on the plight of the house-helps in selected estates in Eastlands in Nairobi County. More specifically, the study sought to: investigate the demographic characteristics of the house-helps; perceived socio-cultural factors influencing female house-help participation in domestic work; the perceived economic factors influencing female house-help involvement in domestic work and finally the causal challenges faced by the female house-helps. A descriptive research design was used in the study. Data was collected using the interview schedule, which was administered to women found in households in selected estates in Eastlands area in Nairobi. The study purposively targeted house-helps with the experience of three years and above. Simple random sampling technique was applied in picking the respondents in each Household. The sample size was 82. The salient findings of the study indicate that the house-helps faced hardship in their working environment. It is thus recommended that their plight should be addressed by all stakeholders more so the government so as to factor in the existing labour laws both nationally and internationally.

“GIVE ME A JOKE, PLEASE!”: CREATING A FUN LEARNING BY TEACHERS’ JOKES
There are lot of phenomena that often happened in teaching and learning processes. One of them is the problems faced by the students in their learning processes. For instance, they are feeling demotivated, sleepy, and bored while the processes in classroom. In order to deal with the problems, some of teachers already had a strategy in their teaching process by doing jokes. However, not all of the jokes can resolve the students’ problem effectively. Furthermore, the impacts that the students got by the jokes were less investigated deeply by prior studies. Thus, the purposes of this study are knowing the certain jokes that affect the students’ learning process and exploring the impacts of the jokes towards the process. This study then narrows the learning process into a language learning process. A qualitative study is used as an approach of this study by conducting classroom observation and interview to collect the data. The data showed that there were several jokes that able to cope with the students’ problems, and several good impacts of the jokes found in the students’ language learning processes. To sum up, the teachers’ jokes can be a way to create a fun learning which encourages the students in their language learning processes
CHINA'S ROLE IN INTERNATIONAL TRADE AMID DURING IN TRADING ATTACKS WITH THE UNITED STATES
Protectionist policies towards Chinese trade aim to balance US trade with China. The United States has seen the Chinese economy which has expanded into the world and become a new emerging force, even the United States sees the Made in China plan in 2025. Amid during in a trade war with the United States, China must be able to survive to keep the economy stable and also to save Chinese interests. The purpose of this study is to discuss more the role of China in international trade amid during in a trade war between the United States, whether it will decline or continue to be improved because the two countries are trade partners that are interdependent to each other. The research method used is a qualitative method. The result of this research is the fact that China still has a role in international trade amid during in a trade war with the United States. The role was then carried out by China through a counter policy towards the United States and several collaborative supports with several countries. Thus, China's role in international trade did not decrease significantly amid during in a trade war
THE USE OF PHYSICAL PHENOMENON AS AN INNOVATIVE SOURCE IN ART EDUCATION
It is undoubtable that there is a reciprocity relationship between the different sciences and fields of knowledge. The relation between art and science is one that extends ancient times since both of them use search and experimentation methods in pursuit of reaching the best results and satisfactory solutions which makes them in continuous development. Likewise, Art education draws its references and aesthetic values from all that is found neoteric whether it is in nature, heritage or other sciences. The idea of integration between art and science prompts on finding innovative ways towards creativity, because whenever the sources behind the design were of a scientific nature, the higher the visual connotations are closer to perception and mental receptivity. Hence, researchers are trying to create new experimental approaches through the study and analysis of some physical phenomena, such as energy, frequency and vibration, which produces precise and perfect artistic forms in harmonious rhythms and in accordance with formalized geometric and mathematical relations of scientific origin that can be used by art students to create innovative design works as intellectual starting points, can be consulted and relied on as technical references, with a formal logic, and mental legitimation, which contributes to the enrichment of the aesthetic values of the art work. So, this study aims to take advantage of some physical phenomena such as energy and frequency and vibration and its formal output as an innovative source in teaching arts
