GUIDED INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING OF TRIGONOMETRIC IDENTITIES
Get PDFThe implementation of K-12 basic education curriculum brought some concerns in the educational sector of the Philippines such as shortage in teaching and learning materials, and the required teaching-learning approach that would cater for the development of 21st century skills among learners. This study developed and validated guided inquiry-based learning materials in understanding the trigonometric identities in Grade 11 Pre-calculus to promote self-directed, independent, and inquiry-based learning, and to verify its effects in student learning. The guided inquiry-based learning materials underwent evaluation and validation, and were evaluated as Highly Acceptable to teachers and students. This study utilized the descriptive method using the 7-point scale. Quasi-experimental design was adopted to measure the effects of the validated learning materials and the use of inquiry-based learning in student’s performance. Results confirmed that students are equally able to develop cognitive skills in trigonometric identities through IBL and conventional learning modality. Thus, the validated guided inquiry-based materials developed and used in this study can be adopted in its original form to promote 11th graders’ self-directed, independent, and inquiry learning necessary for developing 21st century skills such as critical thinking. 
THE DEVELOPMENTAL STAGES OF THE ACQUISITION OF PAST TENSE-ASPECT MORPHOLOGY (Review of the literature)
Get PDFThis paper represents a conceptualization of L1 and L2 developmental stages of the acquisition of English past tense aspect verbal morphology. It constitutes the theoretical chapter of a PhD doctoral thesis that investigates the acquisition of past tense-aspect verbal morphology of EFL Moroccan university learners. The paper basically attempts to provide a recent review of related studies that account for the thesis topic. Primarily, it collects and reproduce the major and the prominent results that tackles the emergence of -ed and -ing past markers in the L1 and L2 context. Various studies attempted to give an understanding the nature of English past markers in different contexts adopting longitudinal or cross-sectional method, either in the natural environment or in the instructed one. Actually, this paper attempts to provide a consistent body of literature to account for the nature of the processes responsible for the emergence the tense-aspect system which differs from L1 to EFL context. Despite discrepancies in the findings, there’s still a consensus on the route of acquisition that seems to be similar among L1 and L2 learners with some respect. Therefore, most researchers seek to investigate the emergence of past tenses marking system through approaching how the interplay between the situational aspect and viewpoint aspect took place. However, this paper will focus on a prototype-based account to explain the nature of past tense-aspect acquisition development
INTERDISCIPLINARY CONTEXTUALIZATION (ICon) LESSONS IN TEACHING SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL MATHEMATICS
Get PDFThe study aimed to investigate the effects of Interdisciplinary Contextualization (ICon) lessons in teaching functions and their graphs. The study utilized mixed methods design to describe the features of interdisciplinary contextualization approach and to identify its effect to students’ academic performance. The lessons were implemented to thirty-eight Grade 11 public school students in Albay, Philippines. The features identified are thematic, use of local context, problem-based learning, inquiry-based learning and collaborative learning. The features identified came from the teachers interviewed who uses the approach and the researcher’s pertinent document analyses. The problems in the lessons used these features in synthesizing concepts that served as an axis of connection among disciplines. The results obtained from pretest and posttest scores of students revealed that there was a significant difference in favor of the implementation. Consequently, interdisciplinary contextualized lessons helped students to be real-life problem solvers, developed cultural awareness by citing relevant in-context problems and helped connect previously learned concepts from other disciplines. Educators must be aware that Mathematics is part of the students’ personal life, community and cultural heritage. Thus, interdisciplinary contextualization approach relate the teaching and learning process within specific communities and culture for meaningful learning experiences of the students. This approach that uses integrated lessons in Mathematics make the teaching and learning more accessible, relevant, and meaningful to every students that would further develop 21st century skills
EXPLORING THE COMPETENCY OF GROUND SERVICE STAFF: THE APPLICATION OF INTERDISCIPLINARY EDUCATION IN COLLEGE VIA THE DACUM ANALYSIS METHOD
Get PDFThis study explores the competency of airlines’ ground service staff and how to narrow the gap between academia and industry. Using the Developing A Curriculum (DACUM) method, which identifies and describes the competencies required for a job, observation of the workplace, and the opinion of experts, this study offers recommendations for the development of curriculums from both academic and industrial perspectives. The results show that the competency profile of airline ground service staff contains 8 duties, 129 tasks, and 101 competencies, including 31 items of knowledge, 34 items of skills, and 36 items of attitudes. It further shows that certain courses need to be included in interdisciplinary education. These include knowledge of the aviation industry, integration ability, an introduction to crime prevention, an understanding of the tourism industry, an understanding of business management, IT skills, legal knowledge, public relations, and some medical experience. COMMODITIES AND HISTORY: A LITERATURE REVIEW ON COMMODITY HISTORIES
Get PDFImperial commodities have been the subject of both popular and scholarly histories in recent years. A considerable amount of literature has been published on commodities such as tea, coffee, sugar, chocolate, tobacco, and spices such as pepper and cloves. Those commodity histories reveal the lure of exotics for Europeans, importantly the Portuguese, Dutch, Spanish and British, who engaged at various times in commercial imperialism, colonialism, capitalism, slave labour, commodity democratisation, changing diets and changing food habits. This paper presents a literature review on selected popular histories that examined commodities, for instance, Sidney W. Mintz’s Sweetness and Power (1986), Roy Moxham’s Tea: Addiction, Exploitation, and Empire (2004) and James Walvin’s Fruits of Empire: Exotic Produce and British Taste, 1660-1800 (1997). This literature review will help us to understand commodity histories literature in a broader perspective
COMPETENCE PROFILE OF AN IDEAL LEADER IN A SELLING CENTER: AN EXPLORATORY ANALYSIS
Get PDFMultidisciplinary sales project teams, in the literature also referred to as selling centers, receive increasing attention in both practice and scientific community. In case, selling centers are formed, the sales associate must assume leadership responsibility for the subject matter experts involved. The challenge, however, lies in the sales associate´s lack of formal authority towards these subject matter experts from other departments. This study examined the research question of which competencies sales associates should acquire in order to be accepted as a leader by selling center participants despite their lack of formal authority. For this purpose, twelve selling center participants were interviewed during semi-structured face-to-face interview sessions. The interviewees described the competencies of an ideal leader from a selling center. All interviews were evaluated by applying qualitative content analysis. In addition, a frequency analysis was carried out to evaluate the number of mentions per competence. A total of six competencies were identified which generate acceptance of leadership in selling centers. The conclusion section of this paper deals with a critical appraisal as well as with future research potential
RELIGIOUS AND POLITICAL ROLES OF THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE
Get PDFThis article examines changes to the role of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (CHS) from its construction to the Latin Kingdom and argues that these changes reflect shifts in Christian perception of sacred space. When it was first built, the CHS was only a monument to the profound event of Christ’s resurrection. During the Heraclian dynasty of the Byzantine Empire, the very structure of the CHS became sacred and Jerusalem became revered as the city of the Holy Sepulchre. As Muslims conquered Jerusalem in the late 7th century AD, the CHS became increasingly emblematic of Christianity itself. Eventually, the CHS was used as a rallying cry to incite European Christians into a crusade. During the Crusader Period, the CHS was transformed into a symbol of Frankish rule. As pilgrims became more intimate with the CHS, Jerusalem’s sacred geography was expanded from only the CHS to include sites encompassing all aspects of Jesus’s life. With these changes to the roles of the CHS, Christians went from originally distrusting sacred space, to embrace the church as their sole axis mundus (sacred space), to accepting the presence of multiple axis mundi on earth; the CHS was among them
“MATHEMATICS ACHIEVERS IN ALBAY: STORIES OF SUCCESS AND CHALLENGES”
Get PDFMost students fear Mathematics but still some manage to excel in the subject. This study referred to those students as the Mathematics achievers. Life stories of seven Albayano Mathematics achievers were written. They exemplify “best” in joining competitions regionally, nationally, and internationally. The narratives highlight their personal and socioeconomic background, achievements and success stories, challenges and coping mechanisms, and contributing factors to success: preparation, support system and motivation. The insights drawn from the achievers’ narratives may inspire excellence in Mathematics and served as basis for the development of an enrichment program. Class observations and interviews were conducted to answer the sub-problems. The stories were content organized and analyzed to find commonalities and uniqueness in achievers, verbatim quotations were also integrated. Findings showed that opportunities to join competitions were based on the efforts of coach/es, priorities of schools, and the community. Both genders were good in Mathematics and were dominantly visual learners. Their study habits were grounded on their learning styles and multiple intelligences. The type of family they were in, source of living, number of siblings, and the families’ average monthly income were analyzed. Financial problem and anxiety were the mutual challenges they had. The achievers were intrinsically and extrinsically motivated. Greater number of coaches for longer review time assure better competition performance. The schools’ motive of maintaining good performance and gaining/regaining trust, and coaches’ purpose of showcasing talents for professional growth and satisfaction open opportunities for public high school students with the abilities and confidence to join and win Mathematics competitions
SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP CHARACTER-BASED LEARNING DESIGN AT THE CENTER FOR COMMUNITY LEARNING ACTIVITIES

THE BIGGER WAVE OF HALLYU (한류) IN INDONESIA: GLOCALIZATION?
Get PDFHallyu (한류) or Hallyu (한류) or best known today as K-Pop, extensively spreading in East Asian countries such as Mainland China and Taiwan. Through globalization, the Korean wave widening its influence on Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia, since 1999. Twenty years on, in 2019, this cultural transformation from Korea to its neighbor countries continuously influence, and even more significant. Indeed Hallyu (한류) is a unique phenomenon in the Korean modern entertainment industry. After Korea massively succeeded in invading Indonesian entertainment with melodrama, film, and music, the term K-Beauty is now very familiar with Indonesian people. The invasion of Korean cosmetic brands, as they start to enter the culinary business as well, by opening Korean food restaurants in Indonesia. However, the regulation of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) and Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) regarding the requirement of Halal certified must be faced by Hallyu (한류) products when they enter the Indonesian market, as the biggest Muslim population in the world. This study is a library research which largerly qualitative. This article has considered the consequences of Korean wave’s influence through Globalization, that triggered the consumerism behavior which can be traced by the rational choice of young people in Indonesia. I seek to examine the influence of Hallyu (한류) in Indonesia in the context of Glocalization as the result of Globalization. It also presented a snapshot of how consumers react and make decisions regarding their purchases in this rapidly influence. The research findings defines that Hallyu (한류) has become an ethnocentric agent for South Korea, which had to deal with the regulation of halal matter in Indonesia. The conclusion of this paper offered some suggestions to help to minimize the pitfalls of Hallyu (한류) influence to Indonesia
