ADDRESSING ADOLESCENCE: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF LIFE STYLE PROGRAMME IN SCHOOLS IN WEST BENGAL, INDIA

    Get PDF
Addressing adolescence through formal school-based sexuality education was part of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (2000). Life Style educational intervention programme was propagated by West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (from 2004 onwards in the state of West Bengal, India) as a part of this global thrust to cater to the needs of adolescents for improved reproductive health, in combating HIV/AIDS and to ensure their right to access adequate information through school-based sexuality education. Life Style claimed to address adolescents’ issues; physical, psychological, and socio-cultural, in a holistic manner. To implement it, teacher- training was started, a manual for guiding teacher-educators was published and schools allocated compulsorily fixed periods for the dissemination of this programme. This paper focuses on the developmental trajectory of the programme to gain insights into organizational problems; effects of culture on pedagogy and experiences of teacher-educators. The deliberate dissociation of the programme from any reference to sexuality education is also identified and explored as inherent contradictions. The content of the Life Style Teachers’ Manual and the narratives of the associated teacher-educators has been explored and analysed. The qualitative data is specific to a particular time (2010 to 2012) and location (city of Kolkata and Greater Kolkata, West Bengal, India). The sample of respondents has been selected based on purposive sampling.  The findings provide suggestive insights into certain social trends and patterns. Explanations of the findings are traced to larger patriarchal social structures and processes. This paper in essence is a qualitative exercise in exploring the conflict and negotiations taking place between established and emerging norms shaping the adolescents’ issues, needs, and rights within the formal educational intervention

    Get PDF
Uncomfortable period, which men and women experience between the age of 35 and 55, psychologists define as a midlife crisis. At that period some people are getting anxious and loose the nerves over a small issue. They consider it a kind of depression. For them, this period is a true "crisis" and they question every choice they've made during the first half of their life and look back on it with remorse and regret. They are struggling with their mortality, confidence, identity, and accomplishments thus far in life. Negative emotions often evoke them to start radical changes to their current lifestyle. Sometimes they change their life for a better, sometimes they make big mistakes. In my presentation, I would like to take a psychological look at this issue and pay special attention to the differences in experiencing a midlife crisis by women and men. I am also going to define reasons that may lead to this emotional crisis

    Get PDF
Significant market developments demand speed in creating batik motifs. In several studies, it was found that traditional batik craftsmen are still unfamiliar with the use of digital technology in creating batik motifs. So we need a method to introduce digital techniques to traditional craftsmen. This article discusses the use of D-Batik software as an application to accelerate the creation of batik motifs. Using a mixed-method with a field test approach this study aimed to find the fastest method to create the batik motifs. D-Batik was tested on 2 groups of traditional batik crafter in the Semarang. Based on the results of trials, it is known that D-Batik can be easily coordinated by batik craftsmen who are still unfamiliar with technology and are able to produce new motifs with high complexity faster than manual techniques. This study provides technical recommendations for the use of digital technology for traditional craftsmen. &nbsp

The results showed statistically significant differences in some critical thinking skills such as observation, similarity, difference, judgments, and overall grade between the experimental and control groups in favor of the experimental, while statistically significant differences showed some critical thinking skills such as observation, arrangement, division, division, judgment, and overall grade between the pre and posttests. For the benefit of the post test, and there were statistically significant differences in creativity thinking skills (fluency, originality, and imagination), which indicates that the Project-Based Program was effective on critical thinking, creativity thinking skills

When the government opens an animation competency on vocational high school (VHS), it is expected to be able to meet the animation industry needs. However, the facts show that graduated students from VHS contribute to the highest unemployment amongst other school educations. This paper tries to identify the existing problems faced by the graduates of the animation program before they enter the real world and analyze the underlying reasons. We conducted an in-depth interview with several teachers, principals, and students, also study literature reviews to collects data. The major problem shows that first, there are still many teachers who lack competencies to teach animation. Second, parents want their children to go to higher-level education in order to get a better life. Thirdly, each VHS that has an animation program must have specialization so that students can master a specific animation area. Fourth, students need to emphasize entrepreneurial skills through social media. This study also presented some recommendations for government as the central role of the education system, and for animation VHS as an education institution in regarding the major problem faced by graduated students

By having these steps, the EAP course could be developed in accordance with learning objectives of every group of learners. Finally, a plan of conducting a needs analysis through questionnaires implemented for the learners before designing the programme is described. The result of the needs analysis conducted could benefit some institutions, instructors, and the learners in designing their EAP courses
