Rice cultivation in Malaysia faces concerns on blast disease, Magnaporthe oryzae attack, and a long maturation period. Generation of new rice mutant lines that possess improved disease resistance and early maturity characteristics are of great importance. Hence, this study aimed to analyze the biochemical characteristics as well as to validate the presence of disease resistance and early maturity-related genes in rice mutant lines (NMR191 and NMR192). After the parent line Pongsu Seribu 2 (PS2) and mutant lines were grown for 14 days, the biochemical tests (total soluble protein content, chlorophyll and proline content) were conducted. The presence of disease resistance and early maturity genes were also analyzed through transcriptomic profiling. The biochemical analyses showed a significant increase in the total soluble protein, chlorophyll and proline content in NMR191 and NMR192 compared to PS2. The transcriptomic profiling analysis revealed that Os07g0129300, Os12g0270300, and Os03g0235000 were the disease-resistance genes whereas Os03g0195300, Os01g0704100, Os11g0143200, Os06g0569900, and Os06g0568600 were the early maturity genes found in NMR191 and NMR192. This study validates that NMR191 and NMR192 could be better varieties than the parent line due to the presence of their early maturity and disease resistance traits. &nbsp

    Get PDF
This research focuses on predicting the profitability of the Bank of Albania, specifically measured by Return on Assets (ROA), by employing advanced time series analysis techniques. ROA is a fundamental financial metric reflecting the bank's ability to efficiently utilize its assets to generate profit, and it holds crucial implications for the stability and sustainability of the central bank. In this research, we have obtained a monthly dataset regarding the profitability of Albanian banks (Roa), covering the period from January 2016 to March 2023. Following an extensive data analysis, we have determined that the SARIMAX(0, 0, 1)x(2, 0, [1, 2], 12) model is the most suitable option for modeling our dataset. The SARIMAX(0, 0, 1) element signifies a non-seasonal moving average component, addressing short-term fluctuations and irregularities in the data. The seasonal component, (2, 0, [1, 2], 12), takes into account both annual and semi-annual patterns, aligning with the observed seasonal trends in the data. The results are expected to be instrumental for policymakers, financial analysts, and stakeholders concerned with the Bank of Albania's financial health. By applying time series analysis to ROA prediction, this research not only aims to enhance the central bank's financial decision-making capabilities but also contributes to the broader understanding of financial stability within the context of Albania's economic landscap

Mergers and acquisitions are an important strategic option for a corporation to drive higher growth and profitability. Despite significant investments being made in mergers and acquisitions, past experiences indicate that many mergers and acquisitions fail. The failure is often attributed to employees’ resistance to change. Factors, such as organisation change, culture, leadership, trust, and communication, among others, lead to employees’ resistance to change. This issue has a significant impact on service organisations since human capital is their key source of competitive advantage. The purpose of this study is to determine factors influencing employees’ resistance to change during the post-merger integration. This paper synthesises findings from a systemised literature review of ‘peer-reviewed’ research papers, published from November 2020 to November 2023, in ProQuest and EBSCOhost databases with keywords ‘employees’ resistance to change’ and ‘post-merger integration’. The findings establish strategies managers could adopt such as creating a continuous learning environment, recognition of the existence of subcultures within a culture, greater involvement of middle managers in the integration phase, devising an appropriate reward plan for early adopters, and focusing on the pace of changes. The study outcomes will help organisations in designing effective post-merger integration programmes leading to efficient use of capital

The energy transition is one of the most relevant priorities in the context of the current production and consumption system. Finance, through Sustainable Finance, must start redirecting money flows towards projects with less impact on the environment. Through portfolio construction, this paper conducts an analysis based on Monte Carlo Simulation and Value at Risk. Based on a sample of 40 international banks, distributed by those that invest more in fossil fuels vs. those that invest less, the main objective of this work is to know the financial viability of the different portfolios considering their return and risk. The results show that the banks that are divesting more in fossil fuels have a lower return and a higher risk compared to those banks that continue to invest in fossil fuels. According to the Monte Carlo Simulation, there is also a better performance of those banks that continue to have a strong fossil fuels investment policy. According to these results, it seems that stronger restrictions should be imposed on fossil fuels investment in order for the major banks to become profitable by investing in projects with lower environmental impact. An in-depth analysis of the policy and legal implications of this performance is a line that can be addressed in the future

ASYMMETRIC CARRIERS: SHIPPING TO HETEROGENEOUS CUSTOMERS UNDER PERSONALIZED PRICING

    Get PDF
Problem definition: We study two asymmetric information carriers that adopt personalized pricing to provide transportation services to end-market consumers. Consumers are heterogeneous in their sensitivity to the quality of the product arriving at their destination. Academic/practical relevance: Consumer dissatisfaction with personalized pricing and product quality may cause them to turn to competitors to satisfy their needs. Competition among carriers and information sharing strategies have the potential to transform carriers’ decisions and thus retain consumers. Methodology: We develop a two-period game model to capture carriers’ freight rates (personalized and non-personalized pricing) and information sharing decisions. Results: We find that market competition and quality-sensitivity information sharing do not affect the incumbent carrier’s personalized pricing but moderate the extent of it by the entrant carrier. In equilibrium, the high-type incumbent carrier can benefit from information sharing, but the high-type entrant carrier may suffer. We also find that a more competitive market may increase the incumbent carrier’s total profit and may decrease the total profit of the entrant carrier. Managerial implications: Our research provides guidance on carriers’ personalized pricing and whether a new entrant should strive to become the market leader. At the same time, our research also provides guidance on whether the informed carrier should share its strategic information

    Get PDF
This study is a preliminary study for creating teaching materials for the development of global human resources who can communicate their own (Japanese) culture, such as the tea ceremony, to the world in English. This study aims to clarify what foreigners are interested in, what they find important, and what they would like to know more about the tea ceremony to create teaching materials reflecting foreigners’ interests and concerns. The results indicated that the participating students enjoyed hands-on activities, such as actually preparing and drinking tea and learning how to eat wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets), even in an online environment. Furthermore, some students demonstrated interest not only in hands-on experiences but also in the history of the tea ceremony, distinctions between Japanese and Chinese tea cultures, and various aspects of the tea ceremony, including tea, tea utensils, traditional clothing (kimono), and the differences among tea ceremony schools. Based on these findings, it is recommended to create educational materials for Japanese university students learning the tea ceremony in English that cover not only the fundamental etiquette of the tea ceremony, but also provide comprehensive knowledge about the broader aspects of the tea ceremony

CROSS-CULTURAL EMPATHY IN EFL CLASSES: A DIALOGIC APPROACH TO TEACHING LITERATURE

    Get PDF
With the turn of the 21st century, the world has flipped into a multicultural space in which cultural gaps have been bridged by a communal sense of awareness that fostered the process of cross-cultural empathy. In the field of education, ensuring a dialogic atmosphere tends to hog the limelight of the major academics shaping a stiff bastion for effective learning pedagogies. The significance of cultural empathy in EFL classes lies in facilitating the acquisition of communicative competencies of the targeted language, through the use of a Bakhtinian dialogic approach and implementing it in the praxis of the learning atmosphere.  The Primary aim of this paper is to investigate the teaching methods and the learning paradigms that allow us to measure the extent to which a dialogic approach advocates collaboration and reflexive interaction among EFL learners to increase their cultural empathy. Relying on descriptive and analytical methods, the present paper also seeks to clarify the significance of this approach in teaching literature, given the fact that literary works consist fertile grounds for diverse points of view captured through the multifaceted understanding of the interwoven links between literary texts. This research concludes that dialogism plays a pivotal role above all teaching practices as it accords a high premium on the critical scrutiny of literary texts. It suggests that, through this approach, teacher-students and students-students discussions during the analysis of texts formulate a robust booster for the English Language enhancement, ergo, cross-cultural empathy
