Post COVID-19 Cognitive Impairment in a Patient with Bipolar Disorder
COVID-19 has caused widespread health conditions, psychological and social distress among people and there is evidence that shows profound neuropsychiatric complications during acute and post-recovery phases of the infection. Cognitive impairment occurring after COVID-19 infection can be explained by various mechanisms, including persistent systemic inflammation, direct viral invasion, alteration in the blood-brain barrier, and cerebrovascular endothelial injury.There are few studies that have explored the impact of COVID-19 on pre-existing psychiatric conditions. This case report highlights the temporal association of cognitive impairment with COVID-19 and the need for cognitive assessment and management in post-COVID-19 patients with pre-existing psychiatric conditions
A review on natural gamma radiation dose levels and its health effects
Exposure to the natural background gamma radiations in both indoor and outdoor environments is inevitable. The long-term exposure to such radiations could result in lung cancer (sometimes leukaemia, CNS tumours); and hence it must be constantly monitored. In this paper, an attempt is made to review the background natural gamma radiation doses reported at various locations for the south Indian environment and it was found that the gamma levels in coastal regions were relatively higher than those in sub continental locations but in most of the locations the annual effective dose rate was within the permissible limits as per UNSCEA
DNA Methylation Pattern Of Cpg Site In The Promoter Region Of CALCA-Alpha Gene As A Putative Epigenetic Biomarker In Neonatal Sepsis- A Prospective Observational Study In South India
Background: Recently, several studies have been reported on epigenetic modifications of DNA as a predisposing factor for several diseases among neonates and adults. Here we aimed to study the changes in the DNA methylation pattern in the promoter region of the CALCA gene among the neonates suspected to have sepsis in a tertiary care hospital.
Methodology: All the neonates suspected to have sepsis based on the inclusion criteria during the study period were included in the study as cases. Normal healthy neonates were included in the study as controls. Positive cases were isolated from suspected cases based on positive blood culture and sensitivity reports. DNA extraction was done by the non-enzymatic salting-out method and was subjected to bisulfite conversion by manual method. Methylation-specific PCR was performed on a Thermal cycler gradient using a standard protocol. Positive samples were further analyzed for their melting behavior using the EpiTetHRM kit.
Results: A total of 115 neonates were included in the study out of which 63 were normal healthy controls and 52 were diagnosed to have sepsis by the neonatologist based on the clinical presentation. Out of the 52 neonates suspected to have sepsis only 7 had positive blood culture. DNA methylation of the CALCA gene was detected in one healthy control and 5 neonates in the sepsis group.
Conclusion: DNA methylation status in the promoter region of the CALCA gene were more from the methylation status in the normal healthy controls. Hence, this may serve as a useful biomarker for sepsis in the future

A 35-year-old male patient presented with history of massive hemoptysis associated with pain abdomen and breathlessness since the past 3 days. Patient had no prior co-morbidities; however was a chronic alcoholic and smoker since the past 15 years. No hospital admissions in the past
