Dance Floors of Polish Traditional Dances: Sensory Anthropology as a Research Tool in Dance Studies
Full text linkThe question of how dances bear meanings is one of the key issues in the anthropology of dance. The author here describes how sensory participation in a dance party with traditional music allows the dancers to understand and negotiate the complex ideas behind the dances. She proposes the dance floor as an analytical category – an emergent modality of space that encompasses dancers and their materialising interactions. The research is based on the theoretical framework of embodiment. The material was gathered through participant observation during dance parties with traditional music. The data presented in this article was collected through observation, with a focus on the chosen senses. The study suggests that the personal engagement of a researcher in the field makes it possible to extrapolate the subjective information of bodily experience within a net of relations that come into being on dance floors. By focusing on the senses and materiality to explore the animated reality of dance, the author is able to provide a phenomenological description of how dance floors communicate information

Sensing the Polycrisis: Artistic approach to walking as ritualisation
Full text linkThis study investigates sensory experience whilst walking in the era of the polycrisis. Through a walk followed by an interview, an attempt to gather impressions about sensory experiences and ponder how these sensory impressions reflect relations within the environment by placing them alongside environmental data, and describe the implications of the polycrisis. The focus lies on sensory registers related to the environment in the Arctic village of Abisko in northern Sweden, an area that is changing rapidly and which has been extensively researched within the natural sciences. The study draws on artistic research and the concept of transcorporeality—that is, bodies are in relation with the world around them and in a constant state of becoming with it. Transcorporeality as a concept is applied as walking ritualisation using multisensory ethnography and ‘walking with’ methodologies to investigate the sensory experiences and relations that make them. The interlocutors—here, called participants—were permanent residents of Abisko. I argue that a walking ritualisation, which involves repetitive sensing and a transcorporeal experience of the environment, adds to the narrative and knowledge of the Arctic polycrisis. In essence, that ritualisation may enmesh the human subject in the more-than-human world.

Koulun keskimääräisen osaamistason merkitys peruskoulun matematiikan päättöarvosanan vertailukelpoisuuteen
No full textTässä tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan peruskoulun matematiikan päättöarvosanojen vertailukelpoisuutta tutkimalla matematiikan osaamisen ja päättöarvosanojen vaihtelua koulutasolla, osaamisen ja päättöarvosanojen vastaavuutta sekä päättöarvosanan vaihteluun vaikuttavia tekijöitä. Tutkimuksen keskiössä on koulun keskimääräisen osaamistason heijastuminen päättöarvosanaan, ja tätä tarkastellaan myös koulumenestykseltään eritasoisten oppilaiden ryhmissä. Aineistona hyödynnetään valtakunnallista oppimaan oppimisen arviointia keväältä 2017 sekä siihen yhdistettyjä yhteishakurekisteritietoja päättöarvosanoista keväältä 2017 (N=7947 oppilasta 85 koulusta). Aineisto analysoitiin kaksitasoisella hierarkkisella lineaarisella regressioanalyysillä, varianssikomponenttianalyysillä sekä kaksitasoisella korrelaatioanalyysillä. Koulun keskimääräinen osaamistaso vaikutti arvosanaan negatiivisesti siten, että korkeamman osaamistason koulussa oli hieman tiukempi linja päättöarvosanojen antamisen suhteen, ja tämä vaikutus korostui erityisesti koulumenestykseltään keskitasoisten oppilaiden ryhmässä. Tutkimus todistaa jo aiemmin havaitun ilmiön, että päättöarvioinnin vertailukelpoisuudessa on epäkohtia eivätkä päättö arvosanat toimi osaamisen validina mittarina. Jatkossa olisi edelleenkin tärkeä kehittää arvioinnin yhdenvertaisuutta tarkastelemalla uudistettujen arviointikriteerien toimivuutta, jotta etenemme kohti koulutuksellista tasa-arvoa

No full textArtikkeli käsittelee kielten kuolemisen problematiikkaa kulttuurintutkimuksen näkökulmasta. Erityisesti kiinnitetään huomiota kielten funktioiden muutokseen. Pyrin asettamaan kielitieteessä käytävän keskustelun vähemmistökielten kuolemasta kulttuuriseen ja sosiaaliseen kontekstiin, ja pohdin kielten yhteiskunnallisten tehtävien muutosta (post)modernisoituvissa yhteisöissä. Yhteiskuntien muuttuessa ravinnontuottamiseen orientoituneista paikallisista yhteisöistä ylipaikallisiksi ja globaaliksi "semioteollisiksi" yhteisöksi myös kieli muuttuu kommunikaatiovälineestä työvälineeksi ja lisäarvoa tuottavaksi tuotteeksi
