This article characterizes four dual-purpose river buffalo farms (DPBPS) in south-southeastern Mexico. The objectives were to obtain a broader profile of this system and capture values related to buffalo breeding in that area. The study identified a group of producers with high levels of education (17 ± 1.15 years) and years of experience in agricultural systems (28.75 ± 10.81), especially with buffaloes (9 ± 1.83 years). Land tenure is private, and the average surface area of ranches is 428.75 ± 245.57 hectares, located mainly (92%) in flatlands and floodplains with an average number of animals per hectare 2.03 ± 0.69 AU/h. The area has various vegetable strata (grasses, bushes, trees). Feeding is based on the consumption of vegetable species like Camalote grass (Paspalum fasciculatum), West Indian Azuche grass (Hymenachne amplexicaulis), and Aleman grass (Echinochloa polystachya), complemented with minerals. Production units (PU) 2 and 3 add a low proportion of balanced feed. The average number of animals per PU is 611 ± 50. Dams and calves represent the largest proportions in the herds. The main breed raised in these buffalo production systems is Buffalypso (58% ± 21%), followed by Italian Mediterranean (24% ± 5%) and Murrah (10% ± 14%). The data collected show that the reproduction methods most often utilized, in order of frequency, are fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI), direct mounting (DM), and estrus-detected artificial insemination (EDAI). Proportions are 61% ± 18%, 24% ± 25% and 14% ± 17%, respectively. The DPBPS studied are distinguished by the presence of owners and managers with high levels of education, extensive experience in agricultural systems, and the capacity and willingness to implement new technologies that permit continuous improvement. However, their experience in buffalo production is still limited, so there is ample room for improvement

Background: Recently, the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education has been promoted in Japan. However, teachers do not yet fully understand using ICT for persons with intellectual disabilities. Objective: This study clarifies the support functions of ICT as perceived by teachers involved in special needs education (support for students with intellectual disabilities). Methods: We conducted in-depth interviews with five teachers involved in special-needs education. We qualitatively analyzed the interview data obtained using content analysis. Results: From the interviews, 53 ICT-utilization episodes were obtained. These episodes were categorized into 13 categories of utilization and seven aspects of support: understanding, communication, behavior, meta-cognition, environment, memory, and opportunities. Conclusion: ICT is a beneficial tool to compensate for intellectual disabilities and help students with intellectual disabilities learn better. We believe that teachers can better assist students with intellectual disabilities by successfully matching individual needs with the ICT features. The results obtained in this study will be helpful while considering support for persons with intellectual disabilities, not only in education but also in vocational training, employment support, and telework support for persons with intellectual disabilities

This study examines the recent security challenges Nigerians and non-Nigerians encounters in their daily existence to eke a living. These threats are orchestrated by the activities of one of the deadliest terrorist group in the world (Boko Haram), and herdsmen notorious killers, armed banditry, cow rustling by rustlers, incessant kidnapping especially students in schools and unsuspecting Nigerians and non-Nigerians alike; which has made Nigeria federating states unsafe for any meaningful socio-economic development to thrive. To achieve this, two objectives were stated to include, underscore the overarching relevance of intelligent gathering in preventing crime and understand the elaborateness of intelligence gathering that can be utilized to mitigate crimes outcomes. The study found that intelligence gathering is the disconnect that has precipitated this state of affairs in Nigeria. Equally responsible is the people’s loyalty which is first and foremost skewed to ethnoreligious and political considerations instead of the country. It was recommended among other appeals to include: The National Intelligence Agency (NIA) of Nigeria which is the coordinating security agency should be properly funded and personnel trained in modern intelligence gathering techniques, the unnecessary bickering, in-fighting for superiority between and among security agencies in Nigeria should be discouraged because this itself is a big challenge in security equation of Nigeria; and serious effort should be made to stop the politicization of security intelligence gathering matters based on tribe, ethnic group, religious and political affiliations

The present investigation aimed to evaluate uterine hemodynamics in six multiparous postpartum buffaloes and their relationship with sex steroid hormone concentrations and enzymatic antioxidant levels. The buffaloes were examined by transrectal Doppler ultrasonography to record the vascular perfusion in uterine arteries of both ipsilateral and contralateral ones. All Doppler indices such as peak (PV) endpoints (EV) of velocity, peak systolic velocity (PSV), blood flow volume (BFV), resistance (RI), and pulsatility index (PI) were recorded from 1st to 6th postpartum. The blood samples were collected starting from 1st-week post-calving and every week thereafter following each ultrasound Doppler examination for assay of steroid hormones (progesterone and estradiol) and antioxidant (superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), and catalase, CAT) were measured. PV of the ipsilateral previously gravid arteries showed a linear pattern of significant (P=0.001) decline from the 1st week after parturition till the 6th week. This decline was also associated with a linear decrease in EV from the 1st week till the 6th week after birth. While contralateral PV and EV are not significantly changed throughout weeks after parturition. The levels of SOD and CAT are significantly elevated at 1st week postpartum compared to the 6th week after parturition. In contrast, the GPx levels did not reveal any significant differences during the puerperal period. Estradiol and progesterone declined from 1st to 5th week after parturition. PV of the ipsilateral uterine artery had a significant (P≤0.05) positive correlation with BFV (r=0.49), estradiol 17- α(r=0.98) and progesterone (r=0.85). The same parameter showed a statically (P≤ 0.001) positive correlation with SOD (r=0.87) and CAT (r=0.92). While, Ipsilateral uterine RI showed a significant (P≤0.05) negative correlation with PV(r=-0.85), BFR ((r=-0.62), estradiol 17- α(r=-0.52), and progesterone (r=-0.88), in addition, RI also correlated negatively with both SOD (r=-0.57) and CAT (r=-0.63). Progesterone and estrogen levels are strongly correlated with SOD and CAT. The uterine hemodynamics in buffaloes is affected by the day of the postpartum period. SOD and CAT antioxidants recorded herein, except GPx, increase in the 1st weeks of calving and are affected by the day of the postpartum period

    No full text
Background: To improve the iodine status and growth of children was not documented in Ethiopia. This study aimed to determine the effects of nutrition behavior communication change (BCC) on improving iodine status and growth of children 6 to 59 months. Methods: A community cluster randomized trial with a single treatment arm was conducted from February 2018 to April 2020. “Kebeles” [lower administrative units] were randomly assigned to either the intervention or the control cluster. Mothers and their paired children were randomly selected from kebeles. Anthropometry data and urine samples were collected at baseline and end-line surveys. Percentile rank and Independent t-test were used to determine the difference between arms. Finally, Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE) is used to isolate independent predictors. Results: At baseline, 97.83 % (n = 812) mothers/ caregivers and paired children were enrolled for the trial study, but at the end-line, 88.05% (n =715) of children completed the intervention. Iodine deficiency prevalence was higher (11.82%, n = 96) at baseline and reduced to 6.15 % (n =44) at the end-line. The growth defect among children was 41 %( n = 332) at the baseline and declined to 28.67 %( n=205) at the end-line, while among interventions reduced by more than two times (39% to 12.81%). At the baseline, the median UIC among the intervention group was 106.0µg/L and increased to 207.190µg/L. The prevalence of iodine deficiency among intervention was 14.29% (n = 58) at the baseline and lowered to 3.45% (n=14) at the end-line, but a slight increment observed among control from 9.36% to 9.71% at end-line. The end-line median UIC was very high (210.56µg/L ± 150 compared to the baseline median UIC (107µg/L ± 8.66). Most (43.6%) of the intervention group found in the 4th and 5th percentile ranks factions of UIC by Height (Ht) mean differences. Being an intervention group increased Ht by 10.85cm (β =10.85, Std. E = 0.33). Likewise, for 1µg/l UIC change a 1cm (β = 1.0, p = <0.05) Ht change predicted at the end-line. Conclusions: Findings from this trial enhance nutrition behavior communication to improve the iodine status and growth of young children in the community. Longitudinal studies are needed to determine the level of iodine deficiency disorders in the community

In the recent past, both non-parametric and parametric approaches have consistently been used to model cost effectiveness in a variety of health applications. This study applies the semi-Markov model while presenting the sojourn time with well-defined probability distributions. We employed the Weibull distribution to model the hazard function for each of the defined transition paths. We defined three distinct states of the semi-Markov process using the quantity of HIV virus in the blood of an HIV-infected person i.e., viral load (VL) copies in a milliliter (copies/mL). The three states were defined; VL < 200 copies/mL, 200 copies/mL < VL < 1,000 copies/mL, VL > 1,000 copies/mL and an absorbing state which is naturally death. We also developed a cumulative cost function, purposely to determine the average estimated cost per patient in each of the defined states. Incremental Cost Effectiveness Ratio (ICER) was utilized in the analysis of cost-effectiveness while comparing two program strategies i.e., Patients under the differentiated care model (DCM) and those who are not considered to be in any model of differentiated care during their respective ongoing clinical follow up. Results show the mean cost of the patients for each state 1, 2, and 3 was 765,765, 829, and 1,395respectively.Moreso,thecomputedICERratiowas 1,395 respectively. More so, the computed ICER ratio was 484/life-year-saved. In conclusion, the cost of keeping patients in state 1 (on DCM) was relatively cheaper and more efficient compared to the other states
