Cellulose-Based Hydrogels: Patent Analysis
Background: Among biopolymers, cellulose and its derivatives are the most commonly used for hydrogel formulations. The innovation and improvement of cellulose-based hydrogels concerned the raw materials, synthesis and methods of preparation, formulations and fabrication processes, as well as applications.
Objectives: This study, in the form of patent analysis, presents the state by introducing what has been innovated and patented concerning cellulose-based hydrogels.
Methods: Three databases have been used in this study: the Patentscope, the Espacenet, and the Lens patent data set. A detailed analysis has been provided regarding publication dates, patent families, jurisdictions, inventors, applicants, owners, and patent classifications.
Results: A total of 8053 patent documents related to cellulose-based hydrogels have been published between 1965 and 2021. The United States leads the patent race in this sector, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is one of the top academic applicants.
Conclusion: Based on patent classifications, most patent documents are related to medicinal preparations characterized by special physical forms. More specifically, the classification concerns materials for prostheses or coating prostheses, including cellulose derivatives characterized by their function or physical properties, such as macromolecular gels, hydrogels, or hydrocolloids
Impact of Resilience on Psychological Well-Being
Background: The issue of the individual's psychological well-being is one of the most interesting and relevant in psychology. Its study has implications not only for theoretical but also for many of the present practical challenges. This study explores predictors of psychological well-being, one of which is resilience.
Objective: The purpose of the study is to analyse psychological well-being predictors and prove that resilience is one of its important predictors.
Methods: To achieve the aim, a theoretical grounding of the key concepts was made, and an empirical study was carried out. The following techniques were used: the Ryff Scales of Psychological Well-Being, the Freiburg Personality Inventory and the Maddi's Hardiness Survey. Furthermore, at the empirical level, the characteristics of resilience among different age groups were recorded.
Results: The study presents the results of a survey involving 150 people of different ages related to the profession of consulting psychologists. Furthermore, the study identified the following predictors of psychological well-being: resilience, femininity/masculinity, positive attitudes, emotional lability, irritability, and aggression.
Conclusions: Based on the study of psychological and pedagogical literature and the study findings, it has been concluded that resilience should be considered a mechanism for achieving psychological well-being. Occupational Balance Improves Subjective Health and Quality of Life Family with Mental Health Disorders
Background: Occupational Balance (OB) is an important determinant of subjective health and quality of life. This study aimed to examine occupational balance's impact on subjective health and quality of life in families with schizophrenia.
Methods: We examined data from 60 adults over the age of 45.
Results: Although the effect size was small to medium, OB was identified as an important factor. Independent variables influence subjective health while quality of life variables in the final model, either directly or indirectly.
Conclusions: Our findings indicate that promoting better occupational balance can improve subjective health and quality of life. Further research in developing intervention programs based on occupational balance is needed to confirm the feasibility of the intervention and its effects on subjective health and quality of life of family members with schizophrenia
Instruments to Gauge Emotional Regulation in Children with Disabilities: A Scoping Review
Background: Children with disabilities have less emotional regulation than children without disabilities, and 62.2% have mental health disorders, leading to high levels of comorbidity. Various instruments to measure emotion regulation in children have been developed, but instruments with adequate validity and reliability have not been reported. One way to gauge emotional regulation is to use a measurement instrument. This study aimed to explore instruments of assessment of emotion regulation in children with disabilities that have adequate validity and reliability.
Methods: This scoping review was conducted to explore the instruments measuring the emotional regulation of children with disabilities. The search was conducted through the Google Scholar, PubMed, and Science Direct databases and included articles published between 2016-2021. The selection process was done according to the Preferred Reporting Elements for Systematic Review and Descriptive Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. The search process used appropriate populations, concepts, and contexts. The critical appraisal used the Joanna Briggs Institute checklist.
Results: Out of 22,835 articles, 14 articles were selected for this review. Some instruments can be applied to measure the emotional regulation of children with disabilities, such as ERC, DERS, FEEL-KJ, ERICA, EDI, BRIEF, ERQ, and CERQ. In general, if the instrument has a good internal consistency, then it can be used to measure the emotional regulation of children and teenagers with disabilities aged 4-19 years.
Conclusion: All of the identified instruments can be used to measure the emotional regulation of children with disabilities
The Formation and Development of the International Legal Protection of Cultural Property
The article considers the formation and evolution of the international legal protection of cultural property from ancient times to the present. The purpose of the article is to identify the prerequisites and features of each historical period in the development of international law in the context of the international legal protection of cultural property, as well as to systematize the relevant international legal acts. The authors provide their own periodization of the development of international legal protection of cultural property. It is concluded that the initial stage of codification of the international legal protection of cultural property is directly related to the development of the rules and customs of warfare
The Effects of a Yearlong Recess Intervention on Body Fat Shifts in Elementary-Aged Children
Introduction: Obesity has continued to rise in recent years due to a lack of physical activity. The school environment contributes to this problem as opportunities for physical activity are eliminated for more classroom time. Recess, defined as unstructured, outdoor play, can increase MVPA and improve current obesity trends. This study aimed to examine body fat category shift differences in children who received 40-60 minutes and those who received 30 minutes. A secondary purpose was to examine differences by district, sex, grade, and race across both groups since they received more than the national average for recess.
Methods: Students in 2nd-5th grade (7-11 years old) (N=393) were selected from schools serving as an intervention (N=190) or control school (N=203) in a larger longitudinal intervention titled Let’s Inspire Innovation N’ Kids (LiiNK). Bio-electrical impedance analysis was used to categorize students as either underfat, healthy, overfat, or obese. These categories were then used to determine if students shifted a category between pre and post-measurements.
Results: At least 30 minutes of recess was significantly associated with a body fat shift in 2nd graders and females. Additionally, the percentage of obese students did not change over the school year. There was no association between the group, sex, or race.
Conclusion: Due to this study occurring during COVID-19, it is hard to make definitive conclusions on the effects of increased recess time on obesity. However, some positive trends are pointing towards recess as a successful method of preventing a rise in childhood obesity
Effect of Oral Placement and Expressive Therapies on Speech Intelligibility of Adolescents with Articulation Disorder
Intelligible speech is vital to every adolescent's life, but this skill can be confounded with the presence of articulation disorder. Meanwhile, studies have been conducted using different therapies to improve speech intelligibility. This study investigated the effect of oral placement and expressive therapies on speech intelligibility among adolescents with articulation disorders.
The study adopted a pretest-posttest, control group, quasi-experimental research design with a 3x2x2 factorial matrix. Three special centers were randomly selected, and purposive sampling was used in selecting 60 adolescents having articulation disorders comprising 34 males and 26 females. These adolescents were randomly assigned to Experimental Group 1 (n= 22), Experimental Group 2 (n= 21), and Control (n= 17). Speech Intelligibility Assessment Scale (r=0.92) was the instrument used for the study. Participants in the experimental groups were exposed to the oral placement and expressive therapeutic treatments, while those in the control groups were sensitized to a placebo. Three hypotheses were tested at a 0.05 level of significance, while data were analyzed using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA), mean scores, and Bonferroni Post Hoc Test.
Findings revealed that there was a significant main effect of treatments F(2,56) = 112.52; p <0.05 (oral placement therapy, expressive therapy, and control group with placebo), and also a significant interaction effect of treatments, gender, and age F(2, 47) = 7.37; p <0.05 on speech intelligibility of adolescents with articulation disorders despite the presence of placebo. Oral placement and expressive therapies were effective in managing the speech intelligibility of adolescents with articulation disorders.
Therefore, speech therapists should adopt these therapeutic interventions in rehabilitating adolescents with articulation disorders
Electrostatic Interactions to Attach Latex to Pigment Surface to Reduce Binder Migration
For many paints, paper coatings, and other pigmented coatings, latex and soluble binders are used to impart mechanical properties. However, non-uniform latex binder distributions are often observed in the thickness direction during application and drying, leading to quality issues. While several publications have documented this issue, few solutions are offered in the literature. Here we report a simple process to use electrostatic interactions to attach latex binder to pigments. Coating suspensions are generated using cationic precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) pigments that are mixed with anionic styrene-butadiene (SB) latex binders resulting in latex-covered pigments. The migration of latex binder in coatings generated on various substrates under various drying conditions was measured using Raman spectroscopy and compared with reference coatings. The new system shows reduced latex binder migration for most situations than those obtained with the reference coating. The coated papers were also measured for strength, opacity, gloss, water drainage rate, and porosity. Little difference is seen in the picking strength of the coating and gloss compared to coatings prepared with standard formulations. Water drainage rate, opacity, and porosity were higher for latex-covered pigment (LCP) coatings than the reference standard coating; this increased porosity is likely due to the strong electrostatic attraction that exists between the cationic pigment and anionic latex binder that reduces the densification of the coating during drying
Development and Validation of a Virtual Moving Auditory Localization (vMAL) Test among Healthy Children
Introduction: The ability to localize sound sources is crucial for humans. Due to specific hearing disorders, the affected individuals may have problems to accurately locate the sound sources, leading to other unwanted consequences. Nevertheless, a simple auditory localization test (that employs moving auditory stimuli) is currently lacking in clinical settings. Essentially, the objectives of the present study were to develop a virtual moving auditory localization (vMAL) test that is suitable for assessing children and assess the validity and the reliability of this test.
Materials and Methods: This study consisted of two consecutive phases. In phase 1, the required stimulus and the test set up for the vMAL test were established. Two loudspeakers were employed to produce five virtual positions, and eight different moving conditions were constructed. In phase 2, 24 normal-hearing Malaysian children (aged 7-12 years) underwent the vMAL test. The validity and the reliability of this test were then assessed using several validation measures. Fleiss Kappa and Spearman correlation analyses were used to analyse the obtained data.
Results: The vMAL test was found to have good convergent validity (kappa = 0.64) and good divergent validity (kappa = -0.06). Based on the item-total correlation and Spearman coefficient rho results, this test was found to have good internal reliability (rho = 0.36-0.75) and excellent external (test-retest) reliability (rho = 0.99).
Conclusions: in this study a new vMAL test was developed and proven to be valid and reliable accordingly for its intended applications. This test can be useful in clinical settings since it is simple to administer, cost-effective, does not take up much room, and can assess auditory localization performance in children. The outcomes of the present study may serve as preliminary normative data as well as guidelines for future auditory localization research
Modern Educational Technologies in a Fractal Approach Implementation in the Math Lessons (on the Example of Learning a Probability-Statistical Line Elements)
The article aims to reveal the didactic potential of modern educational technologies used within the framework of the fractal approach in teaching stochastics to learners, to show the effectiveness of fractal approach technologies in practice experimentally. In the course of the scientific research, the authors employed scientific analysis of literary sources on philosophical and methodological problems associated with the introduction of a fractal approach in teaching and informatization of education; systematization and generalization of the principles of fractal pedagogy; study, analysis, and concretization of advanced pedagogical experience in the use of modern educational technologies in the educational process; observation and analysis of the results of educational activities of seventh graders; and pedagogical experiment. This research allowed for identifying a group of modern educational technologies in the implementation of the fractal approach in mathematics lessons and identifying their didactic potential and possibilities of using, which is reflected in Table 1 of the main text of this publication. At the same time, it was found that the technologies of the fractal approach in teaching are quite useful: the experimental group received the best result
