The present experiment aims to evaluate the effects of incremental levels of water hyacinth (WH) in Para grass (Brachiaria mutica) based on the diet on nutrient intake, digestibility, and nitrogen retention of growing swamp buffaloes. Four male buffaloes of 305 ± 8.40 kg were allocated in a 4x4 Latin square design. The treatments were 25, 50, 75, and 100% WH (DM basis), replacing the Para grass (PG) corresponding to WH25, WH50, WH75, and WH100 treatment. Urea-molasses cake was used to supply the dietary crude protein intake so that this was 210 g/100 kg live weight per day for all the treatments (DM basis). The results showed that although the dry matter (DM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and metabolizable energy (ME) intake were not significantly different (P>0.05) among the treatments, these were numerically higher for the WH50 treatment. Especially in the daily ME intake (MJ/k g LW) was 39.1, 43.4, 41.7, and 39.9 for the WH25, WH50, WH75, and WH100 treatments, respectively. With 50% WH replacing PG in the diet, it gave potential for better nutrient digestibility, nitrogen retention, and daily weight gain in the present study. In conclusion, WH could be used to replace PG in buffalo diet up to 100%. At a level of 50% replacement of WH to PG in the buffalo, the diet was optimum based on the utilization of nutrients and energy of WH, lower feed cost, and environmental improvement

Background: This study aimed to characterize the scenario of buffalo production in the northern part of Bangladesh and review the published scientific literature on buffalo from Bangladesh. Methods: The study was conducted from August to December 2022. A draft questionnaire was prepared and modified before the final one based on the study's objectives. Data were collected through personal interviews with individual respondents. In addition, the review article was collected on buffalo from Google, Google Scholar, Research Gate, Scopus, Bangladesh Journal-Online (BJO), and PubMed. Results: Data was collected from 1099 animals from the northern part of the Natore and Lalmonirhat districts of Bangladesh. Most of the farmers were illiterate, and the age was above 40 years. Regarding the purpose of buffalo production, 69.16% (n=83) of the farmers narrated that they are motivated to milk with calves selling. The average herd size was about 9 and consisted of indigenous and crossbred buffaloes. Most of the farmers kept their buffalo in the Bathan. The coat color was predominantly black, with brown hair. Farmers 94.16% (n=113) practice de-worming, and the frequency was thrice a year. Wallowing is performed at least once a day in the pond or river for the thermal regulation of the buffalo. Among the farmers, 67.50% (n=81) have no training in rearing buffalo. Farmers practice natural mating by their own or neighbor bull to serve the heated cow. Sometimes it’s free, or sometimes, with payment on an average of BDT 400-500 or 3.79-4.73 US dollars. In some areas, AI is being practiced in buffalo under different organizations (LAL Teer, BRAC), and the cost of AI was recorded as about BDT 600-700 or 5.68-6.63 US dollars per cow. The average daily milk yield was 3.0 liter, whereas the lactation length was recorded at 179.9±3.84 days. The major constraints were high feed price 91.66% (n=110), shortage of land 41.08% (n=51), and lack of suitable marketing facilities 50.82% (n=62). 100% of farmers stated that they need improved grass production technology and reduced feed and medicine price; 24.16% (n=29) need good quality semen. From 2004 to 2022, 51 studies were found related to buffalo, where the highest 27.45% (n=14) belonged to performance studies, and 54.90% (n=28) studies were carried out in the southern part of Bangladesh. Conclusion: It can be concluded that buffalo has great potential with different areas of improvement. Therefore, more research is needed from different perspectives on production, reproduction, nutrition, quality of milk/meat/products, health, and sustainability of buffalo farming in Bangladesh

Exploratory Analysis of Predictors Effecting Suicidal Thinking among Inmates Participating in a Prison Treatment Program

In this study, we use a retrospective case–control study design, to compare our outcomes of interest among inmates who have self-reported suicidal ideations (cases) with inmates who do not report suicidal ideations (controls). The sample group included participants admitted into prison treatment programs who have a co-occurring substance abuse and mental disorders. In our multivariate model analyses, we will introduce control variables to understand the magnitude of effect and directionality that control variables, such as demographic and criminal history variables, have in association with our outcome of interest, suicidal ideations. Our results indicate that individuals with stable housing have significantly lower odds of demonstrating suicidal ideations. Finally, we found that individuals with prior weapons offenses and psychiatric hospitalization have higher odds of demonstrating suicidal ideations. We believe these results have implications for the development of research and theory

Mobs who Stripped Female Robbers but Failed to Strip the Male Robbers: The “Evil Women Hypothesis” on Nigerian Streets

    Get PDF
Academic reports on the “evil women” hypothesis have focused mainly on the actions of criminal justice authorities (CJA). However, actions based on this hypothesis equally extend to ordinary members of the public. Vigilante justice on suspected criminals by mobs is a regular occurrence in Nigeria. Thus, the current article drew on vigilante justice on robbers to examine the notion of the evil women hypothesis from the perspective of mobs. Three robbery incidents in three different Nigerian cities involving robbers impersonating taxi operators known as “one-chance” robbers, were analyzed. In all the three incidents, the one-chance robbers comprising both men and women were caught by mobs. In all of them, the mobs stripped the female robbers naked in public whilst their male gang members were allowed to wear their clothes. The actions of the mob conformed to those of CJA with respect to the evil women hypothesis whereby female offenders are punished more severely than their male counterparts due to the idea that the former have crossed the morality boundary to commit a serious offense that goes against the gender-role expectations

    Get PDF
Since 2011 primary school students with special educational needs (SEN) in Ukraine have been allowed to study alongside mainstream students in the inclusive education program established by the Ministry of Education and Science. The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 challenged the possibility of maintaining inclusive education for children with SEN, which required providers to find new solutions. This paper focuses on the first response of inclusion providers in the Ukrainian primary school education system to the challenges of working in wartime from February to May 2022, using teachers in the city of Kryvyi Rih as a case study. A quasi-experimental study (n=495) involved a group of inclusion providers (n=92) in comparison to mainstream primary school teachers (n=403). The research included: collecting data on the professional qualifications and experience of the teachers; questions on changes in the educational process and the number of students; the Psychological Stress Measure; Oldenburg Burnout Inventory; Brief Resilience Scale; and Miroshnyk Teacher’s Roles Self-Assessment Scale (MiTeRoSA), designed as an online survey. The inclusion providers faced numerous challenges due to the war, namely, (a) the enormous workload of preparing for classes (φ*=8.7, p<.01), the extended non-educational work assignments (φ*=5.5, p<.01), working with students (φ*=2.9, p<.01) and their parents (φ*=3.5, p<.01), (b) volunteering at school, and (c) the changed composition of student groups, i.e., students who left school and fled the area (in 64.1% of responses) and incoming students displaced from combat zones (27.2%). Struggling with stress and burnout (self-reported by 48.91% of inclusion providers), using psychological self-care skills and social resilience capacity through the support of the student's parents and colleagues, primary school teachers invented and implemented seven ways to maintain education for the students with SEN, the kind of which depended on the teacher's professional role structure and available social support

Violation of Human Rights and Enforced Disappearance in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Every armed conflict outcome in a violation of fundamental human rights and freedoms. In areas where war conflicts are taking place, certain forms of crimes that are most often committed against civilians and other categories protected by international (humanitarian) law occur as an inevitable consequence. Thus, in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the war that took place in the period 1992-1995. committed numerous war crimes, and crimes against the peace and security of mankind. These crimes were committed against civilians and protected categories of the population, primarily prisoners of war. The issue of protection of human rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina is inevitably connected with the consideration of the consequences resulting from the armed aggression carried out at the end of the twentieth century. One form of crime that is particularly specific to Bosnia and Herzegovina is the crime of enforced disappearance. Enforced disappearances in Bosnia and Herzegovina are most often associated with the out-of-court detention of persons whose fate becomes unknown upon expulsion from their homes or stays in camps and other places of detention. This form of crime is especially significant because its consequences still last, even though 25 to 30 years have passed since its commission. Namely, the total number of registered forcibly missing persons in Bosnia and Herzegovina is 34,965. About 8,000 more people are wanted. Many families have not yet exercised their basic humanitarian right to know the truth about the fate of their family members. The bodies or remains of forcibly missing persons are most often found in unmarked individual or mass graves of a hidden locality. There are a numerous of forcibly missing persons who are still being searched for, and this is precisely the reason why studying the enforced disappearances of persons and considering the consequences of this committed crime is of special social interest. It is especially important to provide legal protection to families whose members were forcibly disappeared during the war and whose bodies or remains have not been found to date. The humane character of this issue must not be overlooked. It is important to find new possibilities in the search for forcibly missing persons, bearing in mind the fact that the passage of time and the biological processes that take place make it difficult to perform this task. Particular attention should be paid to the fact that witnesses or perpetrators of crimes who can provide adequate information end their lives. The truth about hidden bodies thus remains inaccessible. International bilateral agreements involving stakeholders represent one of the new possibilities in resolving issues related to enforced disappearances

Analysis of Fake Authorship from the Perspective of Communication and Hermeneutics

    Get PDF
Literary works such as scientific works, after being created, inevitably attract people's attention and somehow, a kind of communication would be stablished between the work and the author. This communication is realized when it is efficient. Communication is effective if the authors of the work are real. Based on all hermeneutic theories, knowing the true authors, has a great impact on the formation of effective communication between the author and his audience through the interpretation and understanding of the text. When an unreal author is included in the work, the understanding of the audience is disturbed and effective communication is not formed. The main issue of this article is what effect does unreal creation have on the understanding of the audience? By using an analytical-descriptive method, we have come to the conclusion that this type of creativity disturbs the audience's understanding and ultimately makes efficient communication difficult

Comparison of Some Prediction Models and their Relevance in the Clinical Research

    Get PDF
In healthcare research, predictive modeling is commonly utilized to forecast risk variables and enhance treatment procedures for improved patient outcomes. Enormous quantities of data are being created as a result of recent advances in research, clinical trials, next-generation genomic sequencing, biomarkers, and transcriptional and translational studies. Understanding how to handle and comprehend scientific data to offer better treatment for patients is critical. Currently, multiple prediction models are being utilized to investigate patient outcomes. However, it is critical to recognize the limitations of these models in the research design and their unique benefits and drawbacks. In this overview, we will look at linear regression, logistic regression, decision trees, and artificial neural network prediction models, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. The two most perilous requirements for building any predictive healthcare model are feature selection and model validation. Typically, feature selection is done by a review of the literature and expert opinion on that subject. Model validation is also an essential component of every prediction model. It characteristically relates to the predictive model's performance and accuracy. It is strongly recommended that all clinical parameters should be thoroughly examined before using any prediction model

The Problematic Nature of Periodization and the Alleged Paradigm Shifts: Courtly Love Poetry (Minnesang), Petrarch’s Sonnets, Goethe’s Erotic Compositions, and Brecht’s Dreams of Love

    Get PDF
This study raises the scepter regarding the heuristic value of literary periodization and hence also of the concept of the paradigm shift. Undoubtedly, throughout time, changes in the cultural epochs took place, and we can easily determine larger cultural, material, technical, political, and religious transformations Hence the genre of literary histories that inform us in a concise and authoritative manner about that phenomenon. By the same token, however, we might be forced to realize that many of those changes taking place from period to period affected more the form and the text-external references and less the idealistic concern by the individual poets. To illustrate this phenomenon, here I trace a long-term discourse on love from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century to identify a fundamental trope that resisted all paradigm shifts and proved to have a universal staying power beyond all measures. Although value systems and social-economic conditions underwent profound changes from the past to the present, the human dimension itself was apparently quite resistant to those transitions, as the topic of love confirms from the earliest time until today

    No full text
Aims: To analyze the clinical spectrum in Neonates with MIS-N based on the time of presentation and also to assess the use of immunomodulator therapy in MIS-N. Subjects and Methods: We studied 100 neonates delivered at BLDE (DU) Shri B M Patil Medical College Hospital admitted to Level III-A NICU from JULY 2020 to MAY 2021. 98 neonates had high titers of IG G antibodies and were negative for COVID Antigen. We categorized the cohorts into EARLY MIS-N (<72 hrs) and LATE MIS-N (>72 hrs). Results: 58 presented as EARLY MIS-N with Respiratory distress (RD) in 40 (70%), cardiac dysfunction 34 (60%), PPHN 12(20%), Fever 12(20%), seizures 12(20%), encephalopathy in 6(10%), sepsis-like features 6(10%), had elevated inflammatory markers like CRP (30%), D-Dimer (70%), Ferritin (30%), cardiac biomarkers like BNP (60%), LDH (30%) and ECHO showing LV dysfunction in 50%. LATE MIS-N presented mostly with fever 28(70%), sepsis-like features 24(60%), Respiratory Distress in 16(40%), cardiac dysfunction 12 (30%), hypoglycemia 4(10%), parotitis 4(10%), had significantly elevated inflammatory markers like CRP (70%), D-Dimer (50%), Ferritin (70%), cardiac biomarkers like BNP (40%), LDH (20%) and ECHO showing LV dysfunction in 20%, dilated coronaries in 20 %, PPHN in 10%. Oxygen and respiratory support requirements were higher in EARLY presenters and IVIG and steroid requirements were more in LATE presenters. Conclusion: We observed that maternal SARS-COV-2 antibodies transferred transplacentally and neonatal antibodies acquired after COVID-19 infection can cause MIS-N in neonates. Immunomodulator therapy is required in severe cases of MIS-N only
