Air Dispersion Modelling and Wind Tunnel

This technical report presents an analysis of air dispersion modelling using wind tunnel experiments to study the aerodynamic behavior of cylindrical and flat plate aerofoil models, specifically the AF101 cylindrical stack model and the AF106 flat plate boundary layer model. The experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of different wind velocities on the pressure coefficient distribution around the cylindrical stack and the boundary layer development on the boundary layer model. For the AF101 model, the study focused on determining the pressure distribution around the cylindrical stack under varying wind conditions to understand the pollutant dispersion that could influence downwash concentrations. The results indicated significant variations in pressure coefficients due to changes in Reynolds number as flow transitioned from laminar to turbulent flow around a cylinder and predicted that higher turbulence flow results in formation of narrower wakes and greater pressure recovery resulting in higher horizontal and vertical dispersion of pollutants. The AF106 model was used to simulate the atmospheric boundary layer, focusing on the impact of surface drag on the boundary layer\u27s development. The findings showed that boundary layer thickness increased with distance from the surface and was more pronounced at higher wind velocities, highlighting the role of turbulence in enhancing vertical mixing and pollutant dispersion. The report concludes that understanding the aerodynamic behavior of these models under different wind conditions is crucial for optimizing industrial stack design and improving environmental safety by reducing the downwash and enhancing pollutant dispersion away from ground-level receptor

    International Students and Cultural Identity

The aim of the research is to explore the cultural adjustment challenges faced by international students in Ontario. Specifically, this study examined how studying in Canada affects the cultural identity of international students and how international students\u27 cultural identity affected their learning experiences in Canada. Using a qualitative methodology, using interviews as a data collection tool, a total of 10 international students from different colleges and universities across Ontario were engaged virtually with 7 open ended questions through which participants shared their experiences of settling into the Canadian Culture. Participants shared their experiences of cultural adjustment highlighting culture shock, challenges with socialization and the role of community in easing their cultural adjustment challenges. The unique contribution of our study is the various changes the international students had to make to their cultural identities to fit into the Canadian culture whereas this did not feature in any of the existing literature we had reviewed. Also, we found that globalization has made it easier for international students to navigate the cultural identity challenges they face

International Student’s Perception of Mental Health and Well-being

The objective of this research aims to investigate the question, “What are the perceptions of international students on mental health and well-being?” The main focus of the study is to determine the mental health perceptions of international students, including the factors that influence their mental well-being, their awareness of available resources, and their engagement in accessing such resources. The study also focuses on whether adequate resources and services are available to support these students while they are pursuing their studies in post-secondary institutions in Canada. The research used a quantitative approach by conducting an anonymous online survey using Microsoft Forms. Data was collected from 34 international students of various cultures, aged 18 and over, currently residing in Canada. The results indicate that these students have experienced mental health issues during their educational journey in Canada and have accessed some form of services or resources. However, the majority of participants perceive the mental health services and resources in Canada as inadequate and continue to exhibit apprehension when seeking help. The Canadian government and post-secondary institutions should collaborate with international students to better understand their needs and provide adequate mental health services

Understanding Housing Challenges of International Students in Canada

This study addresses the research question on factors influencing housing preferences and experiences among international students in Canada. It investigates the housing challenges encountered by international students through online platforms, utilizing convenience sampling to select participants from diverse backgrounds. The survey, comprising both closed-ended and open-ended questions, explores demographic information, cost, location, cultural considerations, and housing quality and was completed by 23 international students. A mixed-methods approach was employed to analyze quantitative and qualitative data, aiming to unveil variables shaping preferences and experiences in the complex housing landscape for international students. Emphasizing ethical considerations, the study ensures informed consent, participant confidentiality, and oversight from the university\u27s research ethics board. Research results hold potential to inform policies and programs aimed at improving housing circumstances for international students in Canada. By addressing obstacles faced by this demographic, the research contributes to a comprehensive understanding of their needs, fostering a welcoming environment conducive to foreign students\u27 educational pursuits in the country
