How are Companies Modifying Benefits in Total Rewards Programs to Address the Varying Needs of their Employee Population?
[Excerpt] A strategic total rewards program can be used to attract, motivate, and retain employees and generate superior business results. However, while organizations spend an estimated 31.7% of total compensation on benefits, some 60% of firms report having low engagement. Therefore, there is pressure to invest strategically to drive the employee experience. With the increasing diversity of employee populations, as well as the demand for tailored, cafeteria-style benefits, many companies have discovered that a one-size-fits-all approach to rewards is inadequate. This summary will outline how innovative rewards address the needs of these populations

Population Aging and Inequality: Evidence from the People\u27s Republic of China
Population aging has significant economic and social costs, and this paper studies its impacts on inequality, both theoretically and empirically. First, we build a two-period overlapping-generation model with an uncertain lifetime and find that population aging has the overall effect of increasing income and consumption inequality within the society. For the empirical analysis, we use household data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey to assess the age effect on income and consumption inequality in the People’s Republic of China and confirm the results predicted by the theoretical model

Race, Economics, And Social Status
Social and economic status of an individual or group can be measured as a blend of wealth, income, occupation, and education. Involvement of the National Social Partners in the European Semester 2017: Social Dialogue Practices
The latest European Semester cycle, covering the period 2016–2017, has highlighted a range of issues regarding the quality of involvement by the social partners in the elaboration of the 2017 National Reform Programme (NRP), as well as in the implementation of the country-specific recommendations (CSRs). This report looks at the different social dialogue practices across Member States and at the role played by the national authorities in enabling the involvement of employer organisations and trade unions in policy reforms. While some improvements have been reported, the challenges and limitations faced – such as insufficient time allocated to consultation and lack of visibility – need to be addressed in order to enhance the effective participation of social partners in the European Semester
What are the Best Practices to Follow in Order to Establish and Spread Culture for a Newly Formed Company Post-Merger?
[Excerpt] Merger and acquisition (M&A) activity has seen a significant increase in the past several decades and 68% of executives at US-headquartered corporations believe this pattern will continue. Although human capital can be the largest expense to impact a company’s income statement, it should be looked at with the lens of being an asset to the company and one worth strategically investing in. Knowing this, it is extremely important for a company to be prepared for any large changes to or impacts on their workforce, particularly during a M&A. In addition, a company must address the question of whether or not to integrate cultures post-merger. The answer is determined by the reason for the M&A; are the companies looking to achieve economies of scale or of scope? In other words, it must be clear what the objective of the merger is for both companies: growing the current customer base or gaining a new one
Military Benefits for Former Spouses: Legislation and Policy Issues
[Excerpt] This report provides a general discussion of legislative provisions and proposals relating to the military benefits for former spouses. It is not designed to answer detailed questions about specific issues arising in individual cases. Thus, it does not deal with case law nor does it apply legal or judicial interpretations of enacted statutes to specific situations.
Questions that this report seeks to answer include the following: What benefits can former spouses of members or retirees of the uniformed services receive under law? What role do the services play in facilitating delivery of those benefits? What practical problems arise in the implementation of and service involvement in claims on those benefits? How does the current system for a divorce-related division of military retired pay work?
These frequently asked questions reflect confusion and controversy over social policy and economic equity issues. The administrative and legal implementation has proven complex, due to the large number of couples affected and the variety of circumstances surrounding their military service and divorce
