TOWARDS OPTIMAL PROJECT MANAGEMENT: INFLUENCE OF MONITORING AND EVALUATION PRACTICES ON PROJECT OUTCOMES IN HIV SERVICE PROVISION IN KENYA
Objective: Quality healthcare service provision is crucial for achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3 on universal health and well-being. However, a noticeable gap exists in the literature regarding the essential role of Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) practices in planning, data collection, reporting, and results dissemination of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) services. The objective was to investigate extent to which the perceptions of healthcare workers influence on M&E practices.
Theoretical Framework: The program theory was applied as it provides a framework for planning, implementation, and evaluation of interventions by identifying the pathways through which these outcomes are achieved. A retrospective cross-sectional survey design was used as it leverages complementary methodologies. The high consensus levels highlighted the universality of this perspective within the healthcare community. A moderate positive correlation and a significant relationship between the two variables was observed. Theoretically, it showed how the perceived contribution of M&E offers a conceptual framework for analyzing and evaluating interventions toward project effectiveness.
Results and Discussion: Variations in healthcare infrastructure, resources, and patient demographics across regions could influence the applicability of the results. The practical, methodological and theoretical implications of this research provide insights into how the results can be applied.
Research Implications: This study contributes to the literature through practical contributions by identifying progress and challenges throughout the healthcare system to provide.
Originality/Value: The relevance and value of this research are evidenced by guiding stakeholders, project managers and implementers in improving their M&E systems, allowing for better resource mobilization, and planning, by documenting and replicating successful interventions
MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT IN THE CONTEXT OF SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IN ALGERIAN HEALTHCARE INSTITUTIONS
Objective: This study examines the current state of medical waste management in Algerian healthcare institutions, focusing on its role as a cornerstone for applying social responsibility principles in the health sector.
Theoretical Framework: The research explores theoretical perspectives on medical waste management and social responsibility, emphasizing the environmental and health risks associated with poor waste handling.
Method: A descriptive-analytical approach was adopted, employing a structured questionnaire with 32 items distributed across five dimensions: waste collection, sorting, treatment methods, disposal techniques, and manifestations of social responsibility. The study was conducted in selected healthcare institutions in Mascara, Algeria.
Results and Discussion: Findings reveal significant shortcomings in waste management practices, including irregular storage, inadequate waste sorting, and reliance on outdated incinerators emitting harmful gases. These practices adversely affect the environment, public health, and institutional social responsibility. The results highlight the lack of training and infrastructure necessary for modern waste management solutions.
Research Implications: The study underscores the urgent need for healthcare institutions to adopt sustainable waste management practices, strengthen legal frameworks, and integrate social responsibility into their organizational culture to mitigate environmental and public health risks.
Originality/Value: This research provides a comprehensive analysis of medical waste management's impact on social responsibility in Algerian healthcare institutions, contributing valuable insights into bridging gaps in current practices and policies
BEHAVIORAL SKILLS AND NEW PARADIGMS IN THE WORLD OF WORK: AN ANALYSIS OF THE ACADEMIC TRAINING OF UFES ADMINISTRATION STUDENTS
Objective: This study aimed to analyze whether the Federal University of Espírito Santo Business Administration course prepares its students to develop the behavioral skills required by the current job market.
Theoretical Framework: The theoretical framework related to the job market is considered most important for achieving professional success with the behavioral skills worked on in higher education professional training courses. The study assumed that the more market demands align with the training received in higher education institutions, the greater the degree of satisfaction of graduates.
Method: The research used a mixed approach, combining quantitative and qualitative methods, to assess graduates' perceptions of developing these skills throughout the course. Data were collected from graduating students of a class of the Business Administration course at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) through questionnaires and interviews, organized and analyzed using content and semantic analysis, and presented in graph form.
Results and Discussion: The results revealed that the graduates only consider themselves to have the behavioral skills of “teamwork” and “flexibility.” In contrast, in all the others, there is a need to redesign the professional training provided to them about these components that can determine success or failure in the profession.
Research Implications: This research has practical and theoretical implications, including the necessary restructuring of the pedagogical project of the analyzed course, the use of active methodologies in the project's execution, and the support of contemporary technologies in simulations and decisions, such as artificial intelligence and computer vision.
Originality/Value: This study contributes to the literature by showing that the human aspects of administration need to be worked on, such as what future professionals will encounter in the exercise of their profession in conjunction with contemporary technologies
COVID-19 AND THE EXTENSION OF THE INTERNATIONAL COTUTELLE AGREEMENTS
Purpose: The objective of this article seeks to show the particularity of cotutelle thesis during the Covid’19 pandemic crisis.
Theoretical framework: This cotutelle allows the doctoral students to be supervised by two or many thesis directors from several institutions.
Design/methodology/approach: The work carried out aims to analyze the difficulties encountered by doctoral students who are called upon to carry out their work under the supervision of a thesis director in each of the concerned countries.
Findings: For our population, the difficulties related mainly to travel, and other restrictions are multiple: experimentations and scientific progress, pedagogical and the quality of their outputs, travelling and social condition, technical and remote working, Covid’19 vaccine, institutional and financial support.
Research, Practical & Social implications: We suggest a future research agenda and highlight the contributions made to identify dimensions related to cotutelle thesis during the Covid'19 pandemic crisis.
Originality/value: An ad-hoc survey was carried out and used to collect the assessments of these students on the identified dimensions
STRATEGIC ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND OPERATIONAL PERFORMANCE OF NIGERIAN INDIGENOUS OIL AND GAS SERVICE COMPANIES IN SELECTED SOUTH-SOUTH STATES, NIGERIA
Objective: This study examined the relationship between strategic entrepreneurship and operational performance of Nigerian indigenous oil and gas service companies in selected South-South States, Nigeria.
Theoretical Framework: The study adopted resource-based theory and Ansoff strategic success theory.
Method: The study adopted survey research design at organisational unit of analysis used five-points Likert scale questionnaire for data collection. The population of the study was 1827 Nigerian indigenous oil and gas service compaines in selected South-South States, Nigeria with sample size of 328 determined by Taro Yamane’s formula and Bowley’s formula used for proportional allocation of firms. The reliability was determined by Cronbach’s Alpha and construct validity by Pearson’s r, factor analysis, Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) and Bartlett’s Test of Sphericity. The data analysis were descriptive and inferential statistics in Microsoft Excel Software Package version 2016 and IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 29 software application tools respectively. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMCC) techniques was used to test the hypotheses.
Results and Discussion: The results showed that strategic entrepreneurship had positive and significant relationship with operational performance of Nigerian indigenous oil and gas service companies in selected South-South States, Nigeria.
Research Implications: The practical and theoretical implications of this research are in the domain fields of strategic studies, strategic management, entrepreneurial studies, strategic entrepreneurship, management sciences, management technology, innovation, operations and performance management.
Originality/Value: The main contribution of this study is on developing a unique, innovative and simplified framework that systematically aided the empirical analysis of the relationship between strategic entrepreneurship dimensions and operational performance measures of Nigerian indigenous oil and gas service companies in selected South-South States, Nigeria
THE IMPACT OF ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARDS AND REQUIREMENTS ON TRADE LIBERALIZATION: EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FROM OECD COUNTRIES
Objective: This study aims to measure the impact of environmental standards and requirements on trade liberalization in the OECD countries from 1990 to 2021.
Theoretical Framework: The study utilizes economic and environmental theories to examine the relationship between regulatory policies and trade liberalization, utilizing key frameworks such as environmental economics, the Kuznets curve, and global trade models to analyze this interaction.
Method: We used unconditional quantile regression methods to examine the relationship between environmental regulations and trade liberalization. The model includes variables such as environmental policy stringency, environmental taxes, carbon emissions, and renewable energy production.
Results and Discussion: The study concluded that stringent environmental policies increased freedom of trade at different levels of trade liberalization. The results also confirm that environmental tax policies are particularly effective in promoting trade liberalization in countries with weak or low levels of trade liberalization. The results further suggest that in the case of countries where trade liberalization is weak or below average, carbon emissions are associated with increased trade liberalization. Furthermore, renewable energies contribute to deepening levels of trade liberalization in countries characterized by higher-than-average levels of trade liberalization.
Research Implications: This study provides insights into how environmental policies can be strategically used to promote trade liberalization. The findings may influence policy-making in areas such as environmental taxation, energy transition, and international trade.
Originality/Value: This study explores the impact of environmental regulations on trade liberalization, highlighting how different policies can either promote or hinder trade freedom, especially in economies at different stages of liberalization
ANALYSIS OF THE DETERMINANTS OF THE COMPETITIVENESS OF ALGERIAN COMPANIES
Objective: This study aims to explore the role of strategic vigilance in achieving competitive advantage for economic institutions by analyzing its ability to provide strategic information about opportunities and threats in the competitive environment.
Theoretical Framework: The research is based on theories of competitive advantage, emphasizing strategic vigilance as a modern tool for monitoring, observing, and analyzing the external environment to enhance competitiveness.
Method: A descriptive-analytical approach was used, with data collected from a sample of economic institution stakeholders to examine the impact of strategic vigilance across demographic variables such as gender, age, and educational level.
Results and Discussion: The findings confirm that strategic vigilance is essential for achieving competitive advantage. No statistically significant differences were found in responses based on gender, age, or educational level, except for significant differences linked to the variable of professional experience.
Research Implications: The study highlights the importance of training managers and decision-makers in strategic vigilance, recommending regular workshops and practical applications to improve competitiveness in economic institutions.
Originality/Value: This research provides valuable insights into the significance of strategic vigilance as a foundational tool for competitive advantage, offering practical recommendations for its effective implementation in economic institutions
THE IMPACT OF TIKTOK ON EMPLOYEES’ ATTENTION SPAN
Purpose: Most studies on the implications of social media are conducted prior to the pandemic, and either pursue a holistic approach to the effect of social media or focus on the effect of well-established platforms such as Facebook. This study investigates the impact of TikTok use on employees’ cognitive functions, specifically their attention span. The study also investigates the relationship between post-pandemic escalated use of social media and employees’ attention span.
Methodology: Utilizing a quantitative methodological approach, this study collected data from 211 TikTok users to test for three hypotheses: the negative effect of time spent on TikTok on attention span, the negative effect of emotional connection to TikTok use on attention span, and the negative effect of time spent on social media on attention span. Data was collected using questionnaires and the hypotheses were tested using SPSS software for statistical analysis.
Findings: The study provides empirical evidence on the impact of social media and TikTok use on decreased attention span. Findings highlight this negative relationship being an outcome of time spent on the platform as well as the emotional connection to this use.
Practical & Social Implications: Findings are of practical implication for employees and the general society in recognizing the impact of TikTok and other social media platforms on their cognitive functions. Findings also provide empirical evidence to organizations for understanding factors influencing their members’ performance.
Originality/Value: This study contributes to extant literature in two ways: First, it enriches our understanding of the implications of recent patterns of social media use and fast-paced content for cognitive functions. Second, this research contributes to the wider discourse on the implications of information and communication technologies (ICTs) for the workplace, highlighting the negative effect on employees’ attention span, and potentially their performance
ANALYZING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MONEY SUPPLY AND EXCHANGE RATE IN ALGERIA USING THE VAR MODEL: AN ECONOMETRIC STUDY FOR THE PERIOD 1990-2023
Objective: This study aims to analyze the relationship between money supply and the exchange rate of the Algerian dinar over the period 1990-2023. It seeks to provide insights into the short- and long-term dynamics between these variables and their implications for monetary policy in Algeria.
Theoretical Framework: The research builds on monetary theory and exchange rate economics, exploring how money supply influences exchange rate movements. Concepts such as the Quantity Theory of Money and exchange rate regimes form the foundation of the analysis.
Method: The study employs a Structural Vector Autoregressive (VAR) model, utilizing time series data on money supply and exchange rates. Stationarity of the data was tested using the Augmented Dickey-Fuller test, and the existence of a long-term relationship was examined through Johansen's cointegration test. Impulse Response Functions (IRFs) and Variance Decomposition (VD) analyses were conducted to capture dynamic interactions.
Results and Discussion: The findings reveal a significant but limited interaction between money supply and exchange rates. Money supply impacts exchange rates primarily in the short term, with inflationary effects causing initial depreciation of the dinar. The results also highlight the self-driven nature of each variable, with limited cross-variable influence. The implications of these findings are discussed in the context of Algeria’s oil-dependent economy and fluctuating exchange rate regimes.
Research Implications: The study underscores the need for coordinated monetary policies aimed at stabilizing exchange rates and mitigating volatility. Policymakers should consider both short- and long-term dynamics when adjusting monetary tools, particularly in resource-dependent economies.
Originality/Value: This research contributes to the understanding of monetary-exchange rate dynamics in Algeria, offering practical recommendations for enhancing economic stability. It provides a novel perspective on the interplay between internal monetary factors and external economic pressures
CHALLENGES, BARRIERS, AND SOLUTIONS IN PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS (PPP): A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW
Objective: This study aims to systematically analyze and categorize the challenges, barriers, and solutions associated with Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) through a review of recent literature, providing actionable recommendations to improve PPP implementation and outcomes.
Theoretical Framework: In this topic, the main concepts and theories that underpin the research are presented. Institutional Theory, Governance Frameworks, Risk Management Theories, and Collaborative Governance, stand out, providing a solid basis for understanding the context of the investigation.
Method: The exploration of PPP challenges and barriers are conducted by analyzing recently published research on PPP through a systematic literature review. This to establish an understanding of challenges and barriers to suggest specific intervention effort and most ideal solution a to ease PPP issues.
Results and Discussion: The article analyzes 25 selected articles to develop specific categories by grouping together various challenges, barriers and solutions that can be deduced from the selected literatures discussing PPP implementation process to provide comprehensive view for both practical use and theoretical understanding.
