Innovative Approaches and Strategies for Teaching: Dealing with Constraints for better Learning
A considerable amount of research done on teaching and learning is as a guide to effective teaching and better learning. There is an extensive body of research and evidence available on how ways of teaching methods and the design of curriculum affects learning. But they will be helpful only if the teacher educators apply these theories in classroom effectively, in order to observe and reflect better results enhancing reflective, autonomous and in depth learning so that the classroom gets converted into a laboratory where the teacher will relate the theory to practice leading to effective learning. The present paper throws light on some innovative approaches towards teaching providing a base for better foundation of learning and lays emphasis on how teaching in an effective manner can be encouraged and led, despite existing formidable barriers to upcoming change, as barriers are a part of any process and crossing these barriers with proper insight and skill will give direction to a way leading to better learning and a destination to a lightened future
ICT Integration in Teaching and Learning: Empowerment of Education with Technology
Information and communication technology (ICT) in teaching learning means making the effective use of ICT to teach the subject matter in a more interesting manner to make learning easy and fast for the students. It makes use of projectors, internet, multimedia, audio- visual aids and much more for teaching. The use of ICT in teaching learning have changed the whole concept of education and had proved to be of great benefit both for the teachers as well as the students. Through ICT, teachers get an opportunity to use new innovations in their teaching and present the study material in a more refined manner which is easily understood by the students and apart from this, ICT usage in teaching learning by the teachers gives an opportunity to the teacher to get acquainted with the new innovation and become contributors to its use in education. The students gain a lot by learning through ICT and they learn to seek knowledge on their own by using ICT. They also get an opportunity to share their knowledge with others through ICT. But there are certain factors which effect the successful ICT integration in teaching learning. This paper throws light on the benefits of ICT usage in teaching learning, three phases to successful ICT integration, factors influencing ICT by teachers, the barriers to successful ICT integration, implications to check barriers, and the changed role of the teachers
Psycho-Social Variables of Elementary School Children with Spelling Difficulties in relation to their Academic Achievement
Accurate spelling is a complex act that requires cognitive and linguistic knowledge of the phonological, morphological, syntactical and semantic principles of language. Students with disabilities frequently exhibit spelling difficulties related to language learning and are inefficient in cognitive processing. These difficulties often are developmental in nature. The present study is conducted on 222 children with spelling difficulties of five Taluks of Kerala State. Remediation of spelling difficulties in children requires comprehensive assessment. In this article, the researchers discuss about the theory related to spelling disabilities, assessment, remediation and psychosocial correlates of spelling difficulties in children. The major findings of the study state that there is a significant positive correlation between psycho-social variables and academic achievement of children with spelling difficulties. The authors also highlighted the need for early intervention and use of various remedial strategies to overcome spelling difficulties in children
Thinking Comparative Engineering Education: India and the Rest
Engineering education in the globalized perspective undergoing metamorphic changes in changing paradigms. In the context, as a developing nation, India has an opportunity to share the experience of the advanced nations and thereby, through juxtaposition, can adopt appropriate policies for strengthening the existing system of engineering education, best suits for national situations. Perception about the profession and problem context of engineering education needs ramification. Shortcomings in engineering practice need to be identified in the areas of innovation, research and development, design and technical improvisation. System related and profession oriented issues need to be addressed through the global experiences. Contrasting values of employer organizations and profession for an engineer need a clear synthesis for the development in different perception-context. The paper present a snap views on the stated issues which believed to be contributing factors for strengthening the Indian engineering education
Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation — An Appraisal
Education aims at making children capable of becoming responsible, productive and useful members of a society. Knowledge, skills and attitudes are built through learning experiences and opportunities created for learners in school. It is in the classroom that learners can analyse and evaluate their experiences, learn to doubt, to question, to investigate and to think independently. The aim of education simultaneously reflects the current needs and aspirations of a society as well as its lasting values and human ideals. As aspiration and expectations of each generation vary with time, constant review of curriculum and evaluation system becomes an essential exercise. The main purposes of evaluation is to help the learners improve their achievement in scholastic areas and to develop life skills and attitudes with reference to the larger context and canvas of life. In keeping with the above, reforms in the examination system are often recommended, sometimes discussed and rarely implemented. Introduction of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) is one of such reforms which have undergone a long journey. This article examines the concept continuous and comprehensive evaluation, its historical perspectives, its need and importance, its features and role of teacher in implementing CCE in the landscape of Indian school
Impact of A Remedial Strategy on Trigonometrical Error Patterns- A Case Study
Mathematics in daily life, to a large extent is problem solving. Problem solving approach which is core of teaching and learning of Mathematics, depends upon trial and error theory. The errors committed by students cannot be eliminated but reduced to certain extent by studying their causes. Teaching is a process in which a teacher follows various steps out of which two major steps are to discover the errors of students and to provide the remedy for the errors. An attempt was made in the present investigation to study the causes in case of a subject which showed minimum reduction of errors. It was found that the conceptual errors in case of the subject were not reduced
Astronomical Misconceptions Prevalent Among High School Students of Kerala
Astronomy is the study of celestial bodies. It is basically an observational Science and astronomical objects are always in the sky and hence everybody will get some information from their observations which may or may not be true. These incorrect information forms misconceptions. In order to find astronomical misconceptions prevalent among High school students of Kerala, Survey method was adopted. Astronomy Misconception Inventory (AMI) containing 32 items was prepared and given to a sample of 300 students studying in different high schools of Kerala. The data obtained were subjected to percentage analysis. From the study it was found that majority of the high school students of Kerala have misconceptions related to Astronomy. It is hoped that this study will orient the curriculum planners to give more importance to Astronomy in the school curriculum
'Enhancing the Employability of Students’ Passing from Technical Institutions
India has the world’s second largest education system and provides one of the largest pool of skilled manpower. In the recent years, the problem of under-employment or rather unemployment among technical and professional engineering graduates & diploma pass outs is a cause of serious concern. Substandard Institutes are producing mere graduates & diploma holders instead of technically sound and competent professionals as intended. These pass outs are either under- employed or if employed, they do not fulfill or meet out the expectations of Industries or organizations. There is immediate need to take few corrective measures by the academic coordinators, policy makers and management of the institutes associated in providing technical manpower to the industries system; otherwise India will face an explosion of unemployed technical graduates/diploma holders. The world of academia will have to understand the nerve of Industries/organizations and require producing true professionals instead of mere graduates/diploma holders. The paper principally focuses on the multiple ways and means with suggested strategies for the technical teachers as well as institutions to plan, practice and administer such innovations in to their daily instructions, so as to fulfill the gap to a large exten
