Inflection points and industry change: Was Andy Grove right after all?
We examine whether the ‘strategic inflection points’ described by former Intel CEO Andy Grove correspond to mathematical inflection points in the product/technology life cycle. We find one sense in which they do and two senses in which they do not. This leads to a mapping of colloquial uses of inflection point, tipping point, volatility, chaos, and turbulence against the scientific definitions of these terms. The mapping should be of use to researchers and educators, and also suggests to managers that the possibility of foresight and control in technology-dependent industries is more sharply limited than generally believed. The paper highlights implications for organizational sustainability and offers possible coping mechanisms for managers and directions for educators and researchers
A Study on the Effect of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) on People of an Organization
The ultimate objective of any organizational initiative to install ERP system is to reveal some advantage, whether it is associated with cost savings, improved efficiencies, or better decision-making. These systems can in the long run save millions of dollars, improve quality of information, and increase workers’ productivity by reducing the amount of time to do a job. ERP systems can virtually eliminate the redundancies that occur from outdated and disparate systems that may be present in each department of an organization. This paper highlights the effect of ERP systems on the people of an organization. The results indicated that employees, customers and suppliers were benefitted due to installation of ERP systems while external agencies were not affected due to ERP systems
Review of Microfinance Schemes in Haryana with focus on Mewat
Inspite of the fact that Haryana is a fast developing state of India, yet it is grappling with the problem of development of a backward district like Mewat (newly carved out district from Gurgaon and Faridabad). Since Microfinance is considered as one of the major tools of poverty alleviation, this paper describes the various microfinance schemes in Haryana with focus on Mewat. The Mewat Development Agency has been set up at the district level to overview and to monitor the progress of various schemes being implemented under the Mewat Development Board, set up by the Government of Haryana in 1980, as an extra effort of development apart from the normal plan schemes. The Mewat Development Agency is actively promoting Self-Help Groups (SHGs) through its Federation. Mewat has been severely lagging behind in terms of socio-economic parameters of development and the problem is further aggravated due to the rigid socio-cultural mindset of the area. Besides examining the various microfinance schemes in operation in Haryana, an attempt has also been made to highlight the shortcomings of the schemes
Efficiency of Indian Commodity Market: A Survey of Brokers’ Perception
The present study documents the finding of a survey of brokers’ perception pertaining to the recently introduced commodity derivatives market in India. The survey results show the brokers’ assessment about trading/marketing activities and their perception of the benefits and concerns about commodity derivatives. It also throw some light on the perception of brokers about the efficiency of Indian commodity derivatives in performing the functions of price discovery, hedging effectiveness and volatility dynamics. The survey results show that high net worth individual are contributing significantly in the trade volume of commodity derivatives. Interestingly, retail investors are also emerged as the significant contributor in total turnover of brokers. Survey results exhibit that price discovery and hedging effectiveness functions are well performed by all the commodity futures except the energy commodities futures. Energy commodities, being the most volatile commodities, are perceived as having less hedging effectiveness as compared to others. Brokers are assenting on the high to moderate impact of open interest, volume and time to maturity on the volatility of the commodity futures derivatives
Green Computing
Green Computing is the concept to improve environmental conditions. Green Computing has begun to spread in the past few years, gaining increasingly popularity. It includes manufacturing, designing and efficiently using computers and associated subsystems- such as LED,RAM, Processor, Mouse and Keyboard with minimum impact on the environment. We are doing the study and practice of developing Information Technology resources in an environment friendly manner such that our environment get protected. As we all know usage of electronic devices is very popular these days, of which Laptops and Tabs are the most common. Surveys were conducted to analyze power consumption, pattern of devices, components like RAM, Rom processors and LED displays. Furthermore recommendations were made to make them more energy efficient. To promote the idea of green computing, energy star rating were introduced for electronic devices. The more is the star rating, the less is the power consumption. This type of computing can facilitate us to safe and make healthy environment all over the world. Present study will help us to take some initiatives to save vast amount of power which is wasted on very large scale currently under the field of computers/ electronics industry
Learning Region and Performance of Pharmaceutical Industry: Evidence from Two Indian States
In the extent literature, availability of critical regional and technology-based factors have been recognized as the constituents of learning region which in turn lead to the rising performance of enterprises located in the region. These regional factors subsume sub-national policies, vertical industries, knowledge institution, skill, demand and infrastructural factors. Pharmaceutical industry is one of the knowledge-intensive industries, which is theoretically believed to be performed better in a learning region. The present study takes into account two Indian states namely, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh and describes the status of pharmaceutical industry in the light of learning region. The descriptive explanation based on time series data for the last two decades revealed that the rising trends of pharmaceutical industry in the state of Himachal Pradesh, sourced by the conducive policy supports, rising share of chemical industry, rising enrolements in higher education and availability of good infrastructure. On the other hand, despite encompassing considerable infrastructure, skilled labour, knowledge and demand, Gujarat has reported constant or marginally declining trends of pharmaceutical industry, in terms of number of units, output and employment during last decade
Simulating and Analysing the Impact of Routing Protocols on Different Parameters of WSNs
Energy efficiency of Wireless Sensor Networks has become an essential requirement and is the main issue for researchers. Various routing, data dissemination and energy efficient protocols have been designed for Wireless Sensor Networks where energy issue has been given more stress. Sensors in wireless sensor networks work on battery and have limited energy. Hence, network has limited lifetime. Routing protocol plays a major role in deciding for how much time a network will survive. All routing algorithms tend to increase the lifetime of WSN while maintaining factors like successful and real-time delivery of a message. This paper aims towards studying different categories of routing protocols and finally four hierarchical routing protocols LEACH, EHRP, SEP and FAIR have been simulated. The performance of each routing protocol has been measured on some performance metrics like network lifetime, packets transferred to BS, number of dead nodes etc and finally concluded that how a routing protocol can impact the network lifetime
Significance of Supplier Selection Criteria Evolvement in IT Outsourcing to Emerging Economies - Lessons from a Global IT Outsourcing Project
In line with the increasing significance of the acceleration of information technology (IT) advancement and also of harnessing the vigor of emerging economies, IT outsourcing to emerging economies has become global concerns. This enables global companies to enjoy a critical competitive edge by choosing the best option in outsourcing strategy and supplier selection. Consequently, supplier selection criteria have become critical issues for both suppliers and customers. This paper attempts to provide insightful suggestions to these issues. An empirical analysis was conducted taking supplier selection criteria evolvement in global IT outsourcing project focusing on action research in a multinational company. Noteworthy findings include impacts of manager’s change, identification of creative moment and weighting of supplier selection criteria
General Framework of Compressive Sampling and its Applications for Signal and Image Compression A Random Approach
Compressive sampling emerged as a very useful random protocol and has become an active research area for almost a decade. Compressive sampling allows us to sample a signal below Shannon Nyquist rate and assures its successful reconstruction if the signal is sparse. In this paper we used compressive sampling for arbitrary signal and image compression and successfully reconstructed them by solving l1 norm optimization problem. We also showed that compressive sampling can be implemented if signal is sparse and incoherent through simulations
Performance Analysis of Indoor Optical Wireless Links
Indoor wireless optical communication is a good alternative to existing mature RF technology. However various challenges in indoor optical wireless technology are due to free space loss, ambient light, and multi path dispersion causing inter symbol interference (ISI). The degradation in performance due to these facts is very much influenced by the channel topology. So in this paper the performance of indoor optical configuration has been analyzed using three types of channel topologies viz., directed (LOS), non-directed (LOS), and multi beam diffused link for various transmitter and receiver design parameters.
