Get PDFThe history of women’s treatment in the mental health field is long and complicated. Women were treated significantly different than men and many of the theories and ideas that doctors and early psychiatrists had were based on stereotypes about what a woman should act like in society. The mental health field grew rapidly in the early 1800s and many of the original ideas about how women should be treated still exist in the field today. The OMEKA online exhibit will show how differently women were treated within the field as well as showing how treatments and techniques have changed from the early 1800s to present day. Psychological motives for participating in the Holocaust: an educator’s workshop
Get PDFThe research conducted for the educator’s workshop will look at the psychological motives that common citizens had for following Adolf Hitler and allow him to rise to power. The workshop will teach educators to translate it in a way that allows students to better understand the complex nature of how people behave in times such as the Holocaust. The information these educators will garner from the workshops will better allow their students to recognize certain behaviors such as racism. Previous workshops have been successfully completed with facinghistory.org, however, those workshops have not looked at the same arguments as this workshop and have primarily focused on the West coast. Previous research has quoted scientific experiments to explain the ways that people behaved during this time. The primary focus of the research is on the motives. One motive was nationalism; however, this can be broken into two different motives – one being blind nationalism to the point that the people were naïve as to what was going on and nationalism itself where people just believed that their leader was doing the right thing no matter what. Investor heterogeneity: Price momentum and trading volume reactions of foreign listed firms
Get PDFInvestor homogeneity is an important assumption in the efficient market hypothesis. However, viewing the financial markets from the eye of a professional trader, they are never efficient. Financial markets are composed of heterogeneous investors with the aims of speculation. Due to the large gap between theory and reality, many anomalies often occur. Price momentum as one of the commonly seen anomalies attracts the most attention from both scholars and practitioners. Prior finance literature documents that momentum is caused by investors’ differential beliefs or investor heterogeneity. Recognizing the importance of investor heterogeneity prompts scholars to incorporate it into asset pricing models, but they face a series of challenges. The objective of this study is to address the current challenges of quantifying and testing predictions on investor heterogeneity. By analyzing investors’ compositions, I argue that foreign listed firms are natural habitats of diverse investors. Compared with pure US firms, foreign listed firms provide perfect market venues to study investor heterogeneity. Using stock data of 2,200 NYSE and NASDAQ firms from 2000 to 2017, I classified them into higher/low order foreign listed firms and pure US firms. Momentum is tested by the Winner and Loser strategy, while trading volume is modeled by a regression of absolute return on volume turnover. This study finds that the three groups of firms have long term momentum in decreasing order, and investor heterogeneity plays an important role in price momentum.
From phenomenon to essence, this study constructs a novel paradigm to quantify and forecast investor heterogeneity. It is also the first study to investigate the microstructural explanation of momentum and trading volume, and to state the relationship between liquidity and heterogeneity. The “Two Period Order Flow Model” and the “Heterogeneous Market Hypothesis(HMH)” also have important implications and contributions in both academics and industry. The conclusions of this research can benefit professional traders and option strategists in designing their trading strategies; it can help researchers avoid using proxied variables to quantify investor heterogeneity, build heterogeneous asset pricing models and create theoretical foundations for technical analysis; the HMH is also an alternative theory in challenging the EMH; and it can also help regulators better understand the financial markets. Theodore Roosevelt and the Native Americans: How his beliefs influenced his treatment of the Native Americans
No full textIn the attempt to characterize the historical character, Theodore Roosevelt historians have oversimplified the history and the character, leading to extreme perspectives. Some historians have written of him as a hero of the people, a progressive reformer who saved the less fortunate from the wealthy elitists. While other historians referred to him as a racist bent on expansionistic ideas to conquer the world in the name of the Anglo-Saxons. The present thesis accurately interprets Theodore Roosevelt and shows how his progressive ideals and his racist beliefs both originated from the same part of his character. Roosevelt’s progressive ideals and his Anglo-Saxon superiority views led him to believe that his superior Anglo-Saxon race was destined to conquer and then educate the inferior races in self-government. No full textThe purpose of this dissertation is to explore the Emerging Market Manufacturing Business Groups’ innovation processes through their internationalization activities and the interplay between innovation, corporate social responsibility, and sustainability. This study focuses on the business dynamics of manufacturing Turkish Business Groups (TBGs), namely Turkish Holding Companies. It gives a clear illustration of how manufacturing can be innovative, responsible, and sustainable while internationalizing and exceling the firms’ competitive advantage through utilizing both foreign and domestic resources. The study comprises Turkish manufacturing multinationals that operate in the continent of Europe. It examines 15 parent firms and 72 subsidiaries that conduct manufacturing operations in the European countries. The study employs explanatory case study approach. Even when facing thousands of years of historical archaeology, scholars tend to stray away from the opportunity to utilize these sources toward the expansion of America’s precolonial history. A new approach to the study of this topic would remedy this situation by studying regions of America that prove to be hotbeds for archaeological findings. The Merrimack Valley, of Massachusetts, provides an opportunity to refine research as it has a rich archaeological history. Looking through a microscopic lens, a grant proposal will be presented with the intent of studying the precolonial history of the Merrimack Valley, and its artifacts, with the intent of then applying this research to overarching efforts to revise Merrimack Valley’s public history.Master ArtsHistoryCollege of Online and Continuing Educatio
Sports blogging: bridging the gap between journalism and academics
Get PDFBlogging has been an online activity for more than two decades, and its impact has been felt in the journalism and academic communities. In its infancy, the sports blog consisted of an author posting links to other sources. Since then, sports blogs have been used as a journalistic tool by industry professionals and amateurs to break news, provide analysis and context to issues of the day. Likewise, scholars have begun to realize the potential for blogs to reach out to a larger and more diverse audience, using its sense of immediacy to keep up with changing trends in academic sports history. This thesis will show that a bridge has been formed that connects sports journalism with scholarly research. Bridging the gap between sports journalism and digital history has the potential of opening new areas of legitimacy while bringing more credibility to online work. Twenty years after its inception, blogging about sports has positioned itself to connect the immediacy of sports journalism and the long-lasting effects of scholarly journals. A psychoanalysis of Galileo Galilei: observed personality traits as contributing factors in his condemnation by the Catholic Church in 1633
Get PDFGalileo Galilei, and his condemnation by the Catholic Church, termed the Galileo Affair, has been studied for over three hundred centuries, with the preponderance of the literature focusing on and directing animosity between the science and religious disciplines. Avenues of research have included the economic, religious, political, and social lenses; directing the focus everywhere but at Galileo himself. It is for this reason that we seek to psychoanalyze Galileo. A psychoanalysis of an individual examines what lies beneath the surface of their conscious behavior to determine what motivates that person, and why at times they behave counter to their own best interests. This research examines the observed personality traits of Galileo and how these traits directly impacted his career, condemnation, and more specifically the level of the severity of his sentencing using select excerpts of letters of correspondence between the years of 1606-1633. These documents were compiled into the accompanying digital exhibit, the Psychoanalysis of Galileo Galilei. Although this research primarily psychoanalyzes Galileo’s personality, there are also connections drawn between Galileo’s patronage networks and the political turmoil of the period.
