Women in the Superintendency in New Hampshire: A Grounded Theory Study of Resilience

    Get PDF
Though women comprise the majority of the education workforce in the United States, relatively few serve in the role of school superintendent. This is problematic for two main reasons: first, whenever one gender is underrepresented in any field, there is an accompanying lack of voice and ideas; second, in a field that is reaching critical stages of leadership scarcity, the absence of women represents a loss of potential talent in the applicant pool. The purpose of this study is to focus on how women superintendents experience the process of building resilience as they attain and serve in the position of superintendent. This is accomplished by examining participantidentified obstacles, how they overcame those obstacles, and what drove them to continue doing so during their most difficult times. Using constructivist grounded theory methodology, 12 New Hampshire women superintendents were interviewed, using iterative coding throughout the analysis, and the resulting data analysis offers the emergence of a substantive and original theory and two models (the capacitance model and the capacitance model in context) to illustrate this phenomenon. By investigating the core of resilience, this study informs us about strategies and mindsets that potentially open the gates to other women considering this role, increasing gender equity in the superintendency and in the education professional overall.Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)School of Educatio

The American juvenile justice system: Examining disparities and effects in sentencing

    No full text
In the American juvenile justice system, the rights afforded to juveniles and the sanctions they may be subject to vary considerably from state to state. These disparities contribute to inconsistent effects of detainment and incarceration on juveniles, as well as varying rates of recidivism, between states. This research explores the various ways in which juveniles throughout the country are processed and sentenced, as well as how these practices impact juvenile offenders. Additionally, alternative sentencing options and their efficacy are evaluated. To understand this issue, the present research uses two vastly different states in the United States to compare and contrast the juvenile justice practices in each state, and analyze how a real case of juvenile parricide would be handled in each state based on the relevant laws and sentencing guidelines. The way in which juveniles are detained and sentenced plays a significant role in their potential for rehabilitation and this research aims to provide insight on which juvenile justice practices offer youth the best opportunity for success after contact with the justice system. Hiking as nature's therapy

    Get PDF
Hiking is a favorite recreational activity of Americans. It allows for one to stay in physical shape while exploring nature. This paper explores how hiking can be used as a therapy with benefits for the mind, body and spirit. Hiking has been shown to demonstrate a change in a person’s attitude which leads to changing behavior. This change in attitude and behavior creates a positive outlook on one’s self, relationships, and life. The literature provides personal stories of how hiking has been able to improve one’s state of mind which then helps to improve their life. Other literature explored showcases studies demonstrate hiking’s positive effect on mental illness and cognitive functioning. Research conducted with Southern New Hampshire University’s Region Geography integrates personal interviews of students’ perceptions of hiking and its benefits. Students describe hiking as a calming and positive experience. The following research effectively explores the topic and helps to determine that hiking can be used as a therapy. Neuropsychology for kids: Concussions

    Get PDF
The overall objective of this Southern New Hampshire's honors thesis is to create and solve a problem or project that incorporates a topic that challenges the individual but also works to make a difference in the world, no matter how big or small. Specifically in engaging in a course at this University, I have found myself in very challenging classes based on difficult topics. In the spring of 2019 I was taking a biopsychology class and a lifespan development class that tend to overlap sometimes in topics. I found various topics and subtopics in biopsychology to be hard to understand, apply, and explain myself. Therefore I have created a project that involves explaining biopsychology topics in a children's book for the ages including in Piaget's concrete operational stage, which is ages 9 to 12 years old, which incorporates what I have learned from lifespan development courses (Cherry, 2019). In this stage children can think logically and perform mental operations about concrete events. However, conceptual, theoretical and speculative thoughts have not developed in children so far. Based on a study measuring the ability of children in the concrete operational categories ability to understand Chemistry, Biology, and Physics to some extent in learning general science (Ghazi & Ullah, 2015). Therefore this study shows that children in the concrete operational stage have the ability to understand topics related to biopsychology to some extent but not fully. Therefore I believe creating a children's book about these topics, in a language and in pictures that are easy to follow for their age can help to better the ability to understand such concepts. Concepts that even college students and adults struggle to fully understand. (Author abstract)Hippert, F. (2020). Neuropsychology for kids: Concussions. Retrieved from http://academicarchive.snhu.ed

Reading Between the Signs: The Impact of Literacy on the Development of Advertising in Early Modern Europe

    No full text
This study involves discovering how growing literacy influenced the development of advertising in early modern Europe. The goal is to show that as cities became more literate, visual advertising started incorporating more text, creating a shift toward literacy-dependent advertising. A comparative analysis of British, French, and Dutch advertisements (signs, periodicals, and trade cards), as well as secondary sources, show that literacy rates influence the sophistication of the advertisement’s message and purpose. Upon examination, it becomes clear that merchants in early modern Europe transitioned from only communicating awareness to communicating more complex brand messages. This evolution of the brand message echoes the Aristotelian appeals: logos, ethos, and pathos. The first stage of visual advertising persuades by using simple graphic information to show the customer examples and facts. The second stage is related to ethos. It requires the ability to read persuasive text that often attest to a merchant’s character or reputation. The last stage of advertising relates to pathos. It requires a stronger command of the language to understand the figurative meanings behind an advertisement. Understanding the history of literacy-dependent advertising will contribute to future research in social history, as well as advertising history. However, more research is needed to determine if this pattern can be identified in other societies.Master ArtsHistoryCollege of Online and Continuing Educatio
