The Sand Creek Massacre (What’s Collective Memory?)

The Sand Creek Massacre is a historical event that’s filled with complexity, different viewpoints, nationalistic ideas, and most importantly the difference in perception of how we view the massacre based on our collective memory. The Sand Creek Massacre is difficult and complex because the event is surrounded by politics, personal points of view, and racial conflict. When examining the multifaceted perceptions that have been divided into Wynkoop/Soule’s perception against Chivington’s perception of the attack. These two opposing thoughts embodied the tensions that encapsulated the difference in viewpoints throughout the United States when deciding how to treat Native Americans. The inability to come to a reasonable decision on how to treat Native tribes has persisted to this day. My paper will examine the construct behind what type of people should be allowed to stake a claim on the history of the Sand Creek Massacres as their own. I will answer important questions such as, ‘what type of people have controlled the narrative and been at the forefront to determine how the Cheyenne and Arapahoe should heal from the Sand Creek Massacre?’ The Cheyenne and Arapahoe have had an uphill battle to retake their history. There’s been a constant fight for the chance to have Native perspectives control the narrative so the public can finally see the massacre through the lens of Indigenous nations. This paper’s most important facet is to give the Cheyenne and Arapaho people the respect they deserve. I will acknowledge how important it is for the Cheyenne, and Arapaho to frame their history. Doing so will help knock down the walls of discrimination and false preconceived notions Americans have about North American Indigenous nations.Master ArtsHistoryCollege of Online and Continuing Educatio

    Acid Deposition and Brook Trout

    No full text
New Hampshire is being negatively affected by acid deposition. The average pH of waters in New Hampshire are very acidic, which causes issues with the environment of brook trout. This is an issue that is mainly caused by the geographic make up of New Hampshire that hasn’t been addressed in this state by ecologists. In order to address this problem, I propose we integrate a liming program in the rivers of New Hampshire. In order to integrate this program, I will do research on the water and effects of acid deposition on brook trout in New Hampshire, and I will consult with people who are knowledgeable about the water and geology of New Hampshire. This research is impactful because brook trout are an indicator species, so it is important to keep their habitat safe and healthy

Race in America: The History of "Passing" in the South

Race in America, regarding “The History of “Passing” in the South analyzes biracial individuals who used the color of their skin to pass as white in society while also looking at those who were African American that fell on the lighter side. Racial Passing is an overlooked part of American History that is sitting in pandora’s box, waiting to unveil itself. It’s a taboo topic that unravels so much more to American History that is not understood or seen. Looking at this part of history gives us more information on the mental health issues that took place while also looking at the laws that were created to keep blacks and whites segregated. However, we don’t see what that looked like for those who were biracial or could racially pass for a white American. I ended up using sources for this project from primary sources involving photos, legal cases, and census records. Then when it came to my secondary sources, I was able to use Hollywood movies and books that were written by other historians to help me throughout my project. I believe that having a mixture of sources allows me to answer the questions I came up with when I was going down the rabbit hole in regard to the questions that I had when it came to my topic while allowing me to look at the history in between that I will now get to share with others that were unaware of these group of people that were finding, discovering, and hiding, in such a sad and hateful time.Master ArtsHistoryCollege of Online and Continuing Educatio

Sensational Spiritualism: The Study of 19th-Century Reporting and Its Effect on the Spiritualist Movement

The project "Sensational Spiritualism: The Study of 19th Century Reporting and Its Effect on the Spiritualist Movement" will explore sensationalism's effect on the Spiritualist movement in the United States from the mid-19th century through the 20th century. The project explores how sensationalism contributed to the movement's progression, which peaked during the 19th century due to the population's rising numbers and literacy rates. Newspapers are the bulk of the primary sources captured for the project, which depict the unique language and imagery that sensationalism brought forth, intriguing and influencing the interest of society, which directly impacted society's intrigue and interest in Spiritualism. Many scholarly interpretations of why the movement caught on so quickly and dissipated are discussed further in the project. The newspapers are in tandem with Spiritualism's historiography – its rise, fall, and resurgence in the 19th and 20th centuries. Scholarly secondary sources have been chosen to support the vast historiography of the movement. The newspapers will concur with the argument that the preferred choice of language and imagery that sensationalism became known for directly impacted the timeline and historiography of the movement. News agencies had a grasp and influence on society's attention and fascination – Crompton Burton calls it "sophisticated manipulation" - and this project strives to prove that these entities and tactics directly impacted their acceptance and eventual disinterest.Master ArtsHistoryCollege of Online and Continuing Educatio

Stormwater Runoff Threatens the Merrimack River

    No full text
Stormwater runoff and its effects on water quality can negatively impact the environment. For example, combined sewer overflow, also known as CSO, is a major source of contaminants. The sewer systems collect rainwater runoff, domestic sewage, and industrial waste. However, when wastewater treatments become overwhelmed and can not be treated as needed, the untreated polluted water is pushed into waterways. Green infrastructure is a low-cost, adaptable method that helps prevent flooding and erosion. Trees, green roofs, and rain gardens help absorb excess rainfall before it hits the ground and runs down sidewalks, picking up pollutants. Several techniques are described in the literature to measure the reduction of stormwater runoff. This work investigates a new stormwater drainage technique called Urban Green Infrastructure (UGI) to help contain the water flow. Other methods include water diversion, sewage interception, and sediment dredging. A series of studies addresses point sources that lead to water pollution, like combined sewer flow (CSO), infrastructure debris, motor oil, and more. By identifying these sources here in New Hampshire, a new approach can be drawn up to reduce the impact of stormwater runoff without influencing the water quality and environment of the New Hampshire wildlife

The Hidden Truths of the Trail of Tears: A Story of Slavery

    No full text
In the world of history, slavery has always been a topic that is hard to talk about. It is given a few chapters in a history book and talked about only when relevant, but it is a topic of significant importance. When discussed, it is spoken of as a thing that happened with European settlers going to Africa to find enslaved people, which eventually turned into what we know as the Atlantic Slave Trade. We often do not hear or discuss the slavery between two groups that had more in common. Many Native American tribes, namely the Cherokee, practiced the enslavement of African and African American people. Slavery has influenced the relationship between African American Freedmen and the Cherokee Nation. This exhibit will explain why this occurred and what the Cherokee Nation's goal was to participate in this horrible institution. This project will begin at the time of the Trail of Tears up until the Reconstruction Era. Typically, when people think of the Trail of Tears, they think of Andrew Jackson, the Five Civilized Tribes, and the Indian Removal Act of 1830. What is usually not discussed is that thousands of enslaved people were part of the Trail of Tears. During the time, slavery was widespread, mainly among the white settlers. Slavery among Indigenous people may be a less talked about subject since Native Americans were suffering their mistreatment by the American government. This is, by no means, an excuse for someone to ignore or brush aside this issue, but a lot of the time in history, particular events are overshadowed by others. It is also because most History classes at the elementary and high school levels mention the Trail of Tears in passing. It is discussed as wholly Native American mistreatmentMaster ArtsHistoryCollege of Online and Continuing Educatio

Locational Determinants of US Cross-Border Venture Capital Investments into Developing Countries

This study investigated factors influencing US cross border VC investments into developing countries, whether these factors differ between the developing regions and characteristics of the most active US VC investment companies into these distant markets. As VC investors increasingly adopt global perspectives, their expansion into new frontiers of growth such as those in developing countries has grown. Securing VC financing is a key step towards growing developing countries startups since lack of access to external finance is one of the most cited obstacles to the growth of SMEs in these countries. However, cross-border VC investments suffer from increased information asymmetry risks as well as liabilities of foreignness in target portfolio companies’ host countries. Various methods were used to analyze the data and evaluate the hypothesis including – principal component analysis, fixed effects GLS panel data regression, and ANOVA. Our analysis shows that larger, older US VC investors with a global reach invested in developing countries. There is also a strong correlation between institutional quality, geographical distance, cultural disparities, and capital market development and cross border VC investment amounts in each developing country. Also, the four developing regions (Africa, MENA, Latin America & Caribbean, and Asia Pacific) differed significantly between each other in the four key locational determinants of cross border VC investments. Therefore, we conclude that institutional quality, geographical distance, cultural disparities, and capital market development are key determinants of cross border VC investments in developing countries.Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)International BusinessSchool of Busines
