Remembering IRS-1C Mission: The “Game Changer” of Indian Earth Observation Program
India’s second-generation earth observation satellite series started with the launch of IRS-1C in December 1995, twenty-five years ago. It is considered to be a “game changer” for Indian earth observation program. With a 5.8 m panchromatic (PAN) camera onboard, IRS-1C became the highest spatial resolution civilian operational satellite at the time of launch and maintained this status till the launch of IKONOS satellite in 1999. IRS-1C also had a unique feature of 3-tier imaging geometry that drew the attention of global remote sensing user community. Other than the PAN camera, the 23.5 m multispectral camera including a shortwave infrared band and the high repetitive coarse-resolution two-band camera facilitated many newer applications and scientific investigations. Commercially, it was one of the most successful missions of the IRS program. The lessons learnt from this mission were even more significant, as these have led to many dedicated theme-missions subsequently
Air Quality, National Standards and Human Health in India (NIAS Policy Brief No. NIAS/NSE/EEC/U/PB/25/2021)
A clean air environment is prudent to healthy living. Studies related to the impact of ambient air pollution on public health are limited in India. Studies conducted by researchers at NIAS indicate that the natural baseline levels for Particulate Matter pollution in 10 megacities (with different climatological conditions) are significantly higher than the WHO’s Air Quality Guidelines levels. The exposure-response function cannot be universal due to the adaptive power of human beings. Therefore, coordinated national effort between MoES, MOEFCC, and ICMR is required to conduct scientific studies to determine the "exposure-response function" for Indians

Introduction to the urban ecologies open collection: A call for contributions on methods, ethics, and design in geographical research with urban animals
This Open Collection proposes innovative research directions for both urban and beyond/more-than-/non-human geographies with animals. We are seeking papers for this Open Collection across three themes: (1) methods; (2) ethics and politics; and (3) planning and design. Specifically, we are interested in papers that pose questions of and reflect upon emergent tensions in researching with urban animals in each of these themes. This Open Collection aims to explore urban space beyond the human lens and to offer new modalities and frameworks
for geographical research with urban animals. We are interested in papers that
explore urban geographies with animals from a range of different theoretical,
methodological, and empirical locations and perspectives. In this introduction to
the Open Collection, we briefly summarise existing research in this field, before
outlining the three thematic areas of the Collection
A GPU based virtual screening tool using SOM
This paper attempts to introduce the applicability of low cost graphics processing unit alternatives to a virtual screening technique using a novel self-organising map (SOM) based technique. This method combines the unsupervised learning capability of the SOM with a subsequent supervised labelling of the trained SOM neurons for building the prediction model. This novel iteration-based SOM technique can label molecule as undefined classes which can reduce the false positives in the screening. For running large datasets, the serial implementation of the proposed algorithm is very time-consuming and cannot be completed in a stipulated time frame. This has been overcome by exploiting the parallelism present in finding the winner neuron and neuron weight updating steps. A tool named SOMSCREEN is developed based on the proposed parallelised method to make the drug discovery process faster. It is observed that, the proposed method offers reduced false positive rate than the Random Forest based work

Addressing resilience to cyclones - a perspective
Cyclone is one of the major natural hazards that threatens
human lives, livestock, agriculture, infrastructure, buildings,
forest and wild life in coastal areas. As the Bay of
Bengal basin is more prone to cyclogenesis compared to
the Arabian Sea, the East coast of India has been more
vulnerable to cyclones than the West coast. During the
last two decades or so, the intensity of cyclones has increased
mainly over the North Indian Ocean. It could be
attributed to warming of seas among other factors. The
stronger winds resulted in higher storm surges and waves,
which led to deeper inundation of inland areas and made
coastal regions highly vulnerable. We have to live with
the hazards of cyclones and prepare ourselves to build resilience,
especially to save lives. The impacts of cyclones
are through strong winds, storm surges, heavy rainfall and
floods. Hence, in order to build effective response mechanism,
we need to assess our vulnerability to such events
Potential of Geospatial Technologies as a Cognitive and Spatio-visual tool for Mapping the Past
A major challenge in understanding the past is that it is not available for exploration
at present. The sections of history that deal with geographical associates of human
endeavours also pose a challenge to the readers and learners about the scale and
experience of a past landscape. Despite the cognitive and reasoning capabilities of
individuals, views of an entire landscape cannot be achieved by normal eye view.
Geospatial technologies provide immense potential for accessing historical landscape
and past realities. The tools are helpful in twin ways. Firstly, they enable learners to
understand the existing information about landscape by providing synoptic and 3D
views through interactive visualisation tools. Secondly, they enable researchers to look
for clues to the past settlements in a landscape in ways that are not otherwise possible,
i.e. “see” through infrared lens and integrate evidence gained from observations made
across different times. The present paper discusses some of these advantages that we
gain by applying gospatial technologies to normal human perceptions
