    Till August 30th, 2021, a whopping number of 21.75 crore people have been known to be infected globally by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, and 45.19 lakh people have succumbed to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Research has shown that progressive fibrotic lung disease is one of the possible consequences of pulmonary pneumonia induced by the novel coronavirus and is one of the most worrisome complications following the recovery from the COVID-19. Considering its importance and sensitivity in the human body, lung performance is a good indicator for understanding the host tolerance to infectious diseases. Therefore, in lung functionality, the discussions revolving around pulmonary fibrosis are even more relevant

    PROFESSOR Roddam Narasimha (herafter RN), one of India’s leading scientists, researcher and teacher passed away in Bangalore on 14 December 2020 at the age of 87. Having obtained a basic degree in mechanical engineering from UVCE, Bangalore he graduated with a Masters from the Department of Aeronautical Engineering, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore. At IISc he was mentored by Professor Satish Dhawan, one of the founders of the indigenous Indian space programme and Director of IISc for over 20 years. RN went on to do his PhD under Hans Liepmann, who had also supervised Prof Dhawan, from the prestigious California Institute of Technology (Caltech), in the USA

    The initial occupation of Southeast Asia by ‘modern man’ (Homo sapiens sapiens) occurred largely from the Indian Subcontinent. This can be modeled based on some simple assumptions. We present a mathematical model that simulates the possible spread of human populations from India to Southeast Asia in prehistoric periods. We discuss the nature and path of this migration and show that it agrees with the settlement patterns of humans in SE Asia. However, the interaction between the two populations has a long and continuous history where ideas have flowed in both directions in the past. We explore the evidence for contact between the cultures in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia that must have occurred since prehistoric times. India has a rich tradition of megalith-building, including a living tradition of megalithism in the Northeast states. We examine the possibilities of this megalithic tradition extending into Southeast Asia. Certain megalithic structures in India, like stone alignments, exhibit definite and deliberate orientations to points of astronomical interest on the local horizon; and we invite study along similar lines on Southeast Asian megaliths. The influence of India on monument-building traditions in various parts of Southeast Asia from the seventh century onwards is well studied. These deliberate orientations are echoed in the design and layout of later monuments too, like certain Sun-facing temples. Unlike the unsure associations of the two regions in prehistoric times, which are not yet established beyond doubt, the link between temple-building traditions in the two regions is fairly well documented. We examine these linkages and see the broad pattern of travel of ideas between India and Southeast Asia. We end with an invitation to researchers in Southeast Asia to examine the local archaeoastronomical record for similarities with Indian monuments, both prehistoric and later, in their design and orientation, to explore possibilities of cultural contact leading to an exchange of astronomical idea

    Tuberculosis in captive Asian elephants has been a subject of interest among the experts and practitioners for the past few decades. During COVID -19 pandemic, the zoos remained closed and the caregivers had to spend extended hours in the enclosures to help the elephants get rid of boredom and depression. Such proximity enhanced the chance of TB transmission from elephants to human bodies. Hence, effective measures are needed for early detection of TB infection in captive elephants to curb further transmission

    Against phenomenal bonding

    Panpsychism, the view that phenomenal consciousness is possessed by all fundamental physical entities, faces an important challenge in the form of the combination problem: how do experiences of microphysical entities combine or give rise to the experiences of macrophysical entities such as human beings? An especially troubling aspect of the combination problem is the subject-summing argument, according to which the combination of subjects is not possible. In response to this argument, Goff (2016) and Miller (2017) have proposed the phenomenal bonding relation, using which they seek to explain the composition of subjects. In this paper, I discuss the merits of the phenomenal bonding solution and argue that it fails to respond satisfactorily to the subject-summing argument

    The lengthening pendulum: Adiabatic invariance and bursting solutions

    The adiabatic invariance of the action variable of a length varying pendulum is investigated in terms of the two different time scales that are associated with the problem. A length having a general polynomial variation in time is studied; an analytical solution for a pendulum with length which varies quadratically in time is obtained in the small angle approximation. We find that for length with quadratic time variation, the action neither converges (as it does for linear time variation), nor diverges (as it does for exponential time variation), but rather shows oscillatory behaviour with constant amplitude. It is then shown that for a pendulum length which has a combination of periodic and linear time variations, the action is no longer an adiabatic invariant and shows jumps with time. In the case in which the length varies sinusoidally in time, we demonstrate that the full nonlinear system exhibits bursting oscillations

    A Comparative Approach to Understand the Current Ethno-techniques of Ironsmiths of South and Western India: Case Study of Karnataka and Gujarat

    In the Indian Subcontinent, the tradition of using iron is well established, as indicated by the large number of metal objects unearthed from different cultures. Archaeological investigations, especially at Atranjikhera, have amply shown that iron, in its technological and economic aspects, has come into use some time by the end of the second millennium BCE. The current research aims to understand the iron technology from two different regions (Karnataka) and (Gujarat) through the lens of current ethno-technological approaches to gain fresh insights, especially given that ironworking traditions are vanishing into the sunset. This research explores several aspects concerning iron technology along with micro-level observation of past and present practices. Comparative analyses of the construction of furnaces, building structure of the workshop location, tools such as chisel, axe, blade and so on as well as the socio-cultural aspects concerning the family involvement, mobility, migration, current status in society and decline of iron technology in the study area were undertaken. This comparative study is a helpful tool to gain more insights into the anthropology and ethnoarchaeology of iron working, including aspects such as the migration of ethnic practice
