Urban Undesirables: City Transition and Street-Based Sex Work in Bangalore
This book presents urban transition experiences over nearly three decades in Bangalore based on the narratives of the city's street-based sex workers. Sex workers – female, male, and transgender – have been omnipresent in Bangalore's streets for decades. However, despite being blacklisted as 'undesirable' and hazards to the 'ideal public', they have their own unique imaginaries and narratives of the city and its mutations. In mapping out their spatial and social ecosystems and experiences with technology, this book redraws, rewrites, and relooks at a city and its transformations from their perspectives. The analysis of their experience is anchored to concepts around neoliberal urbanism, gender, labour informality, and the politics of technology. The authors take an unconventional journey through their spaces, comrades, and battles to announce and affirm their individuality and agency through their empowerment strategies, and through their struggles to reclaim their spaces and assert their identities as informal workers and legitimate citizens of the city

as a better explanatory variable than GDP (in PPP terms)
per capita for projecting two-wheeler fleet size in India. A
higher coefficient of determination was found for the road
density-only based model (in the range 0.978-0.988) as
against GDP-only based model (in the range 0.880-0.945)
Matriliny, Merchandise and Islam: A Study of the Keyis in the Coastal Belt of Tellicherry, North Malabar
As owners of extensive matrilineal joint households in the Tellicherry Coastal town (North Malabar, South India), Keyis upheld an urban-centred identity in the colonial period. Scattered around the coastal town of Tellicherry in Cannanore, the Keyis today form an economically diverse group. The socio-economic distinction of the Keyis from other Muslim merchants on the Coast, their consolidation of social organisation along the matrilineal line and their economic relations based in landlord–tenant relations are explored here. The nature of the transformation of economic relations and kinship practices among the Keyis in the colonial and post-colonial period puts forth interesting dimensions of their everyday practices as shaped by historic and region-specific socio-economic, legal and political conditions. By undertaking a historical and ethnographic examination of this kinship group, this paper explores Muslim communities and cultures through their pluralities and recommends a methodological shift towards the exploration of kinship practices to inform the current scholarship on the Anthropology of Islam and Kinship Studies
Assessment of Socio-technical Constraints of Marine Fishers in the Utilisation of Marine Fishery Advisories in Southern Odisha, India
Sustainable marine fishing practices are often hindered by local-level factors in areas with high fishery potentials, such as Odisha, India. Scientific services to fishing, such as Marine Fishery Advisories (MFAs) on the Potential Fishing Zone (PFZ) and weather information in the form of Ocean State Forecast (OSF) advisories provided by INCOIS, India, are valuable knowledge products which can help the fishers to overcome several socio-technical constraints (STCs) to effective fishing practices. The present investigation provides a critical analysis of five STCs prevailing in 4 districts (Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri and Ganjam) of Southern Odisha which can possibly hinder the effective assimilation of the MFAs. These five STCs are the hierarchy of fishers in fishing operations, pathways of transition to new fishing technologies, the adaptive capacity of the fishers to use scientific advisories, the need to achieve economic resilience from fishing as well as the contribution to the preservation of ecosystem sustainability. Stakeholder mapping based on the ground-based observations revealed that inadequate transitions pathways, varying hierarchical positions and low adaptive capacities contributed to higher STCs in general. Sensitivity of the fishers to achieving economic as well as environmental sustainability in their enterprise leads to lower STCs and greater assimilation capacities. The analyses of STCs presented here provide a robust methodology to manage the social cost of carbon which can be useful to achieve sustainability targets with respect to marine fisheries by adopting regular use of MFAs

Collective movement decision-making in primates in crop-raiding contexts
Crop-raiding by wildlife species often involves collective group movement and animal decision-making in this context is an important area of investigation as the risks and rewards associated with crop-raiding are greater than those that are likely to occur in wild food foraging situations. Yet, the form of consensus decision-making involved in wildlife crop-raiding has not been evaluated. In the current study, we assessed the decision-making process exhibited by rhesus macaques, a generalist primate species, in the context of crop-raiding. We predicted that rhesus macaques would display unshared consensus decision-making during the higher risk-entailed crop-raiding collective movements. We followed two groups of rhesus macaques and collected data on their movement and foraging behavior during crop-raiding events. The results from our study showed that collective movements in the context of crop-raiding were largely led by single individuals. However, individuals of all age-sex categories successfully led crop-raiding collective movements. Although adult individuals joined adult-initiated raid movements most often, they also joined raids initiated by other age classes. Contrary to our predictions, in crop-raiding contexts, rhesus macaques demonstrated a tendency towards equally shared decision-making for group movements
Response Surface Methodology-based Prediction Model for Working Fluid Temperature during Stand-Alone Operation of Vertical Cylindrical Thermal Energy Storage Tank
Domestic hot water applications rely on the stand-alone operation of thermal energy storage (TES), in which natural convection significantly affects the efficiency of a storage system. The present study develops a two-dimensional axisymmetric numerical model for detailed simulation. Subsequently, an effective prediction model for a vertical stand-alone cylindrical storage tank is formed. The results of the detailed model are found to have good agreement with the findings of the in-house experiments. The experimental and numerical results show the formation of temperature gradients with time, known as thermal stratification, which affects the storage efficiency and thermodynamic quality of the stored heat. A seven parameter three-level Box-Behnken Design (BBD) Response Surface Methodology (RSM) is used to develop a prediction model for the working fluid temperature inside the tank. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is performed to evaluate the effects and interactions of the process parameters for selecting the statistically significant terms. Based on the ANOVA, a reduced prediction equation is generated. Various plots such as normal probability, predicted versus actual response, versus fits, versus order, Pareto charts, main effects and interaction effects are created to analyze the model. Comparing the results of the detailed model and prediction equation, it is concluded that the newly formulated scaling-based prediction equation can predict and characterize the performance of the TES under test with adequate accuracy

Energy security warrants the uninterrupted supply of
energy at affordable prices. India faces the twin challenges of meeting the aspirations of its 1.3 billion population even as it safeguards its energy security and contributes to global efforts to mitigate climate change. Thanks to the Electricity Act of 2003, the installed coal-fired thermal power plant (TPP) generation capacity in India more than doubled from 94 GW to 192 GW between March 2011 and 2017. This sharp increase in the installed capacity has enabled the government to increase per capita electricity consumption by 37% while reducing peak demand deficit from 9.8% (2010-11) to 1.6% (2016-17).
