    This book delves into the psychology of teaching and learning history. It provides insight into the cognitive processes by which individuals imbibe history and how identity associations can shape our interpretation of histories. It assimilates concepts such as political scenario, curriculum, and pedagogy to give a holistic understanding of the processes involved in the learning of history. It discusses various themes such as the instrumentality of history in nation-building; psychological features and development of Historical Understanding; and the marginalisation of community history. It also provides suggestions on how teachers can reconcile with the developmental stages and multiple versions of history, while teaching tolerance and acceptance without compromising on nation-building commitments.     Experimental investigation of heat dispatch controllability through simultaneous charging-discharging and stand alone- discharging opeations in vertical cylindrical heat storage tank

    Using a vertical cylindrical thermal energy storage (TES) tank with helical discharging coil fitted inside, the present study experimentally investigates the scarcely studied simultaneous charging and discharging (SCAD) mode, as well as the discharging-alone operation following a substantial stand-alone period. The temperature distributions within the tank, coil outlet temperature and primary thermocline thickness serve as the key performance trackers for the storage tank. The primary thermocline thickness increases with increasing coil side flow rate during the SCAD operation. The SCAD operation exhibited the splitting of the primary thermocline, leading to the formation of a secondary thermocline in the lower half of the tank. The sustenance of secondary thermocline, thermal gradients across the tank height, and the discharging efficiency are found to decrease with increasing charging flow rate, whereas the coil outlet temperature and the primary thermocline thickness increase. The highest average discharging efficiency of 80.1 % is observed for the TES charging at 0.5 L/min at 70 °C, accompanied by the 2 L/min discharging flow rate. The average thermal energy stored is the maximum (1758 kJ) for the TES charging at 1.25 L/min at 70 °C, with discharging rate of 0.5 L/min. The stand-alone period prior to the discharging-alone operation exhibits the heat content retention capability of the storage and allows for the thermocline formation. The time required for thermal stratification is more with the higher initial charging temperature. The time required for the complete discharging of the TES storage tank decreases with increasing coil-side flow rate. These modes provide ample operational flexibility and heat content dispatch controllability, resulting in the versatility of the system

    Exploring teh forest and mapping its archaeology: Bandhavgarh National Park and Tiger Reserve, India

    The archaeology of historical India has usually been perceived through the lens of cities and states, leaving forest tracts to a large extent unexamined. This article considers the historical signature in a segment of the Bandhavgarh National Park and Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh, India, in order to understand how histories of occupation in jungles and wilderness where no settlements presently exist can be studied. Our survey involved a combination of ground-level investigations using GPS devices along with an analysis of satellite images to explore whether such images can be used for locating structures and sites. The earliest archaeological markers in Bandhavgarh are cave shelters of the 2nd century CE, which form the subject of this article

    Nonhuman individuals and groups, living in anthropogenic landscapes, often adopt adaptive foraging strategies, mediated by their day-to-day interactions with humans and their artefacts. Exploring such novel behavioral manifestations, especially in the Anthropocene, offers us insights into behavioral innovations and their transmission in such rapidly changing ecologies. In this study, employing field experiments, we investigated an example of human-induced, extractive foraging behavior – the extraction of liquid contents from plastic bottles – in a synurbic bonnet macaque Macaca radiata population. The main aims of the study were to examine the distribution, diversity, inter-individual variability and intra-individual flexibility of bottle-directed manipulative behaviors, and to explore the social and environmental factors driving this behavioral practice. We video-recorded the manipulation of partially filled plastic bottles and the extraction of liquid across four groups of bonnet macaques in southern India. Two socio-demographic factors – age class and group membership – and one environmental factor – food provisioning – were identified as major determinants of inter-individual variation in the performance of sophisticated manipulative techniques and in bottle-opening success. Our results also suggest that age-related physical maturation, experiential trial-and-error learning, and possibly social learning contributed to the acquisition of foraging competence in this task. These findings illuminate the mechanisms underlying inter-individual behavioral variability and intra-individual behavioral flexibility amongst free-ranging individuals of a cercopithecine primate species, traditionally known for its ecological adaptability and behavioral plasticity. Finally, this study documents how the presence of humans, their artefacts and their activities facilitate the development of certain behavioral traditions in free-ranging nonhuman populations, thus providing valuable insights into how human–alloprimate relations can be restructured within the increasingly resource-competitive environments of the Anthropocene

    Application of Vegetation Index to Assess the Sustainability of Coal Mines in India

    India’s per capita electricity consumption is less than one-third of the global average. Coal is the only energy source that India possesses in abundance to meet the 24×7 electricity requirements of its people in a cost-effective manner. While mining operations have positive economic impacts on the local area in terms of infrastructure development and provision of employment and business opportunities for the local population, they also create adverse impacts on the environment. These impacts are particularly significant in the case of opencast coal mines which produce more than 94% of the coal produced in India. The coal sector must incorporate social and ecological sensitivities into the mining process from the planning stage up to mine closure to meet India’s Sustainable Development Goals. In this study, the authors present the results of a study on the vegetation and air environment around four opencast coal mines in the State of Telangana. The Normalized Vegetation Difference Index (NDVI) is useful to assess the environmental impacts of mining operations, such as the air quality and vegetation around coal mines, and also monitor the progress of post-closure activities.     Regulatory framework for India's energy security and sustainability

    India is enhancing domestic coal production to provide affordable electricity to its people even as it is committed to the responsible use of coal in power plants incorporating the latest clean coal technologies. However, the current regulatory framework for coal mines in India entails a multiplicity of laws, overlap of jurisdictions, duplicity of procedures and inadequate enforcement of environmental laws, which do not augur well for the sustainable development of India's energy security. Harmonization of laws, policies, procedures, and authorities engaged in mining, forest, and environmental governance of coal mines is critical to achieving India's Sustainable Development Goals. This paper examines the legal provisions related to environmental regulation of coal mines in India to identify the thorny issues in the extant regulatory framework. We then propose a comprehensive regulatory framework that includes the constitution of an independent Coal Mines Environment Authority to minimize the adverse environmental impact of coal mines through an integrated approach that will enhance the effectiveness, efficiency, and transparency in the environmental governance of coal mines. The paper outlines the composition and functioning of the proposed Authority which may provide pointers for other coal-producing countries seeking to improve the environmental regulation of their coal mines

    Assessing equity in public transportation in an Indian city

    Equitable distribution of public transportation services is one of the Sustainable Development Goals. An evaluation of the need for and access to public transportation is therefore necessary to enable an equitable allocation of resources for the same. This paper evaluates spatial equity in the network of metro feeder buses in the city of Bengaluru in India. This network acts as the first and last-mile commuting mode for the metro lines. Accessibility of the metro feeder network from “points of interest” is measured using the Public Transportation Accessibility Index and the need for public transportation, differentiated across socio-economic groups, is estimated using the Public Transportation Need Index. The horizontal and vertical equity, which quantitatively represent the spatial distribution of metro feeder buses with respect to the transportation need, are then calculated. The results suggest access and need are well balanced in the existing metro and feeder bus network, with the exception of some areas. However, a similar analysis of the upcoming phases of the metro network highlights the specific areas in the city that will need urgent attention if access to the mass transportation services offered by the metro is to be equitable. This paper demonstrates a method to include the principles of equity in transportation planning and also a method to evaluate it in existing networks

    A geospatial study of the layout and extent of the eighteenth-century walled city of Hyderabad

    Hyderabad and Golconda are prominent medieval cities in Deccan India, claiming significant roles in shaping the transformation of the region in the 20th and 21st centuries. This study focuses on defining the contours of Hyderabad’s walled settlement, a fortified structure built around Hyderabad city, the capital of Hyderabad State after the fall of Golconda in 1687. The capital shift to Hyderabad occurred gradually even with the construction of Char Minar in 1591. The city became an important factor to understand the growth of Hyderabad in the Nizam and British eras. The core of the study is based on how different maps of the walled city dating from the 18thc. to 20th c. describe a picture of change in the settlement arena of Hyderabad. These maps signify the areas of development, which can be conjectured in present-day Google Earth. It also compares different maps to bring about the information on built features in the city and georeference them in today’s setting so as to understand the spatial change in the arrangement of the city. The findings of the current work are used to conduct a detailed field survey to check and document remains that still exist and also the condition they are in at present.
