    Using a Three-Tier Diagnostic Test to Assess Students’ Misconceptions of Genetic Concepts in Nigeria

    Biology is one of the major STEM subjects that has witnessed a higher enrollment in the final year external examination in Nigeria. However, there has not been a high performance of students in this examination which tests students’ conceptual understanding of genetic concepts. This research centered on senior high school students (SHS) in their final year, who were preparing for their external examinations, aiming to assess their fundamental knowledge in genetics before transitioning to college. Specifically, the research focused on genetic concepts, an integral part of their exam syllabus. The study's results were concerning, revealing a significant gap in the student's understanding of these essential genetic concepts. The result shows students’ misconceptions about genetics using a three-tier diagnostic test. It is a necessity to provide effective strategies, through curriculum content focus, and better teaching methods that are coherent and efficient in informing students of career pathways associated with genetics. Based on the scarcity of research utilizing three-tier diagnostic tests to examine students’ misconceptions in genetics, future studies should focus on the broader administration of such tests as a tool for the identification of students’ misconceptions

    Unmuted: The Voices of Women in Low Brass

    This project explores the lived experiences of ten women-identifying musicians who play the trombone, euphonium, or tuba – brass instruments traditionally associated with a lower musical register and often dominated by men. Through in-depth interviews, these women recount their personal journeys into the field and highlight barriers they have faced, such as gender bias, exclusion, and the issue of sexual harassment and assault, an experience that was familiar to each participant either firsthand or was known to occur within the profession. While their stories highlight systemic inequalities in the world of brass music, they also reveal resilience, leadership, and the vital contributions these musicians make to their art and communities. By centering their voices, this research seeks to foster awareness, encourage hard conversations, and advocate for more inclusive and equal spaces in low brass performance and education

    Cooperative learning is an instructional method in which students help each other’slearning about an academic subject in the classroom or in other environments by creating smallmixed groups. The purpose is to allow students to actively participate in a lesson in order toestablish common learning goals, enhance the self-confidence of the learners, improve theircommunication skills, (Aykaç, 2005; Eilks, 2005; Gillies, 2006).Recent studies have revealed that cooperative learning enhances students’ cognitive abilities byfacilitating active communication among peers (Johnson, Johnson, & Smith, 2014). Researchershave consistently highlighted the positive impact of cooperative learning on promoting deeperlearning and improved academic performance in classroom settings (Johnson et al., 2014; Lin,2006). As cooperative learning encourages active student engagement in their educational journey,it becomes a catalyst for the development of higher-order thinking skills. This approach offers allstudents the opportunity to engage in discussions, share their perspectives, and critically evaluatenot only their own ideas but also those of their peers (Johnson et al., 2014). Consequently, Changand Mao (1999) observed that effective cooperative learning fosters an environment of activelearning, enabling students to transcend basic textbook knowledge and delve into the explorationand application of advanced skills.Beyond its academic benefits, this cooperative approach has a profound impact on students'attitudes toward their peers and school, as well as their interpersonal relationships and self-perception (Bilgin and Geban, 2006)

    Measurement of Spray Chamber Ignition Delay and Cetane Numbers for Aviation Turbine Fuels

    Experiments using pure compounds, National Jet Fuels Combustion Program (NJFCP) test fuels, and commercial jet fuels were conducted to demonstrate the equivalence of the indicated cetane number (ICN) and derived cetane number (DCN) for jet fuels. The calibrated range for ICN was also extended to lower cetane number (CN) values (5 to 35) to allow CN quantification for jet fuel synthetic blending components (SBCs) with low CN. ICN and DCN were shown to be highly correlated for values above about 30. This study presents the most comprehensive comparison of these two methods published to date. Because of the importance of low-volume test methods for early-stage SBC production process development, we demonstrated that ICN and DCN can be accurately measured with 15 mL of fuel, well below 40 to 100 mL required by standard methods. ICN or DCN is important for jet fuels because fuels with lower CN are more prone to lean blowout (LBO), an undesirable operational failure in a jet engine. Comparing data on a fuel-to-air ratio (Φ) at LBO for the NJFCP fuels shows similar linear correlations for ICN and DCN. Ignition delay measurements at lower-pressure and higher-temperature conditions may be more directly relevant to LBO. At 675 °C, 0.5 MPa, and a global Φ of roughly 0.68, ignition delay time correlations to LBO were similar to those produced from DCN and ICN. A much weaker correlation was obtained with a global Φ value of 0.34

    Geometric and Positional Isomer Effects on Ignition Behavior of Cycloalkanes: Implications for Sustainable Aviation Fuels

    This study investigates the ignition behavior of six dimethylcyclohexane (DMCH) isomers and cis-/trans-decalin, focusing on the effects of molecular geometry and substitution patterns. Ignition delay and derived cetane number (DCN) were measured using a CFR ignition quality tester under ASTM D6890 conditions. Among the DMCH isomers, cis-1,3-DMCH exhibited the highest reactivity (DCN = 37.4), while cis-1,2-DMCH showed the lowest (DCN = 21.8). The most significant stereochemical effect was observed between cis- and trans-1,3-DMCH, with a 12-unit DCN difference. Temperature- and pressure-dependent tests of decalin isomers revealed that cis-decalin consistently ignited faster and exhibited stronger pressure sensitivity, supporting a mechanistic interpretation based on 1,5- versus 1,6-H shift pathways. Additionally, the impact of trace polar degradation products on ignition delay (ID) was assessed, revealing significant ID reduction in trans isomers after storage. These findings highlight the need to consider geometric isomerism in kinetic modeling, sustainable aviation fuel formulation, and surrogate design, particularly for fuels rich in cycloalkanes

    Case for Folk Valuation of Plant Genetic Resources Redeeming Nikolay Vavilov’s Multiculturalist Plant

    This work brings together evidence from the historical, ethical and cross-cultural dimensions of Plant Genetic Resource (PGR) conservation to argue for an accounting of diverse folk value – i.e. value central to the cohesion and survival of particular peoples or nations – in the collection and safeguarding of the precise plants that humankind needs to survive well. I argue that, without the original commitment to the simultaneous defence of biological and cultural survival that gave rise to PGR conservation in the menacing Soviet Union, today’s stringently utilitarian valuation of PGR risks further eroding the traditional and Indigenous motivations and traditions that have stewarded PGR into the present and that continue to power plant conservation around the world. By accounting for the breathtaking variation in folk value for plants within collections, PGR maintenance and conservation can construct and safeguard more desirable and more important plant collections than those that currently exist, while bolstering the world’s persistent and diverse cultures of plant conservation. Such an approach is congruent with the deeper scientific truth for which Russian agronomist and botanist Nikolay Vavilov stood and for which he was martyred: that we shall not survive biologically without the cultural diversity that is the fountain head of humanity’s global plant endowment

    PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AN EXAMINATION OF THE ATTRIBUTES, FACILITATORS, AND BARRIERS WITHIN THE K-12 PUBLIC SCHOOL ARENA

    This qualitative study investigated the attributes, facilitators, and barriers to professional learning within K-12 public school districts, focusing on the experiences of Teaching and Learning leaders in Washington state. Recognizing that systemic structures and an organizational culture supportive of professional development are crucial for equitable student outcomes, this research sought to understand how these central office leaders of professional development describe the conditions and challenges in planning and implementing professional development, and how district culture influences this work. Utilizing a qualitative design, the study gathered rich insights through semi-structured interviews, providing a voice to participants to share their leadership successes and challenges within their unique contexts. Key findings indicate that effective professional learning is characterized by strong alignment with district priorities, instructional goals, and systemic strategies, fostering a shared purpose among educators. Crucial facilitators include robust leadership support, which promotes collaboration and communication, and the emotional intelligence of facilitators, vital for building trust and psychologically safe spaces. Conversely, significant barriers identified were educator resistance to change, often stemming from a lack of agency, overload, insufficient support, and a perceived disconnect from classroom realities, alongside limitations in time and financial resources. The study also illuminated the pervasive influence of broader contextual factors, such as public perception, accountability pressures, policy mandates, and collective bargaining agreements, on professional learning initiatives. This research contributes to the field of educational leadership by offering practical insights into cultivating conditions and mitigating barriers for meaningful professional learning experiences that can lead to transformational change. The findings underscore the importance of a holistic and integrated approach to professional development, emphasizing its direct link to enhancing teaching practices, fostering collective responsibility, and promoting continuous improvement
