EXPLORING THE IMPACTS OF CLINICAL RESOLUTION OF METRITIS ON DAIRY COWS THROUGH AN EPIDEMIOLOGICAL AND A MOLECULAR LENS
Metritis is a polymicrobial uterine disease defined by the inflammation of all layers of the uterus within 21 days postpartum. Metritis diagnosis is based on the evaluation of vaginal discharge, which is characterized by fetid, watery, and reddish-brown discharge. Metritis is associated with negative impacts on reproduction, milk production, removal from the herd, and cow welfare. Although antimicrobials are widely used to treat cows with metritis, approximately 20% of cows are not cured within two weeks of commencing treatment. Failure to achieve clinical cure has negative effects on performance. Although studies have reported that cows that fail to undergo clinical cure may have a more intense degree of inflammation and tissue damage compared to cows that achieve clinical cure of metritis, the mechanisms that underlie clinical cure failure of metritis remain unclear.The objective in the first study (Ch. 2) was to characterize differences in the uterine and serum metabolome associated with clinical cure failure of metritis in lactating Holstein cows. Differences in the uterine metabolome on day 0 (day of metritis diagnosis) associated with clinical cure failure were linked to carbohydrate, amino acid, and lipid metabolism. Greater concentrations of arachidonic acid, ribose, and glutaric acid were associated with clinical cure failure, suggesting a greater degree of tissue lesion and inflammation. No differences in the serum metabolome were associated with cure failure. No differences in uterine metabolome were associated with clinical cure failure on day 5 (day of cure assessment). The findings suggest that clinical cure failure is associated with a greater uterine inflammatory process that does not continue until cure assessment day. Approximately 50% of the cows treated for metritis are cured within five days after treatment, but the literature regarding the differences in lactational performance associated with time to cure of metritis is scarce.
The objective in the second study (Ch.3) was to evaluate the association between time to clinical cure of metritis and reproductive performance, milk production, and removal from the herd. Cows that achieved clinical cure within five days after antimicrobial therapy had improved reproductive performance (risk of receiving a first service and achieving pregnancy by 300 DIM) and a lower risk of removal from the herd compared with those that recovered later. Time to clinical cure of metritis was not associated with differences in total milk production. Time to cure of metritis may be a useful indicator of future performance and survivability in dairy herds and may help guide on-farm decisions and identify cows at greater risk for suboptimal outcomes.
Together, these findings advance the understanding of the biological and performance consequences of metritis recovery, offering insights that may guide future research and management strategies to improve reproductive health in dairy herds
A STUDY OF EQUITY-FOCUSED PRINCIPAL LEADERSHIP IN SUBURBAN SCHOOLS WITH CHANGING STUDENT DEMOGRAPHICS
Suburban schools in the United States educate the majority of the nation’s students, yet leadership for educational equity in these contexts remains underexamined. Most research on equity-focused leadership has concentrated on urban or high-poverty districts, leaving unaddressed the distinct social, political, and organizational challenges suburban leaders face when responding to persistent inequities within settings often perceived as successful or immune to issues of race and class. This study investigates how principals working in suburban schools understand, navigate, and enact equity leadership amid the competing demands of accountability, community expectations, and entrenched ideologies of meritocracy and colorblindness.Grounded in theories of transformative and culturally responsive leadership and informed by research on political navigation and relational trust, this qualitative study draws upon semi-structured interviews with suburban principals from multiple districts across a large metropolitan region. Data were analyzed using a thematic approach that emphasized iterative coding, constant comparison, and analytic memos to identify patterns across leaders’ narratives.Findings reveal that suburban principals experience equity work as an ongoing process of balancing moral conviction with political strategy. Participants described engaging in relational diplomacy, building trust and gradual awareness among staff and community members, rather than direct advocacy or confrontation. They highlighted how navigating predominantly White, middle class environments requires a nuanced understanding of privilege, resistance, and community power dynamics. While many principals viewed themselves as advocates for inclusive practices, they also acknowledged the emotional and ethical complexity of leading equity efforts within systems that prize neutrality and consensus.The study contributes to scholarship on educational leadership by reframing suburban contexts as critical sites for understanding equity oriented change. It extends existing models of social justice and transformative leadership by emphasizing the relational and political dimensions of equity practice, demonstrating that leadership for justice in suburban schools is characterized less by dramatic reform and more by persistent, context responsive negotiation. Implications are offered for leadership preparation and district policy, including the need to cultivate leaders’ political acumen, reflective capacity, and relational trust building as essential tools for advancing equity in resistant educational landscapes

HEAT FLUX IN LOW MASS FLUX HORIZONTAL CRYOGENIC FLOW
Liquid hydrogen (LH2) is the highest specific impulse rocket fuel commonly available. However, launch systems using LH2 are informed by flow boiling heat transfer and pressure drop correlations, the most recent of which has up to 50% root-mean-squared error. This error is exacerbated because no previous experiments have optically verified cryogenic multiphase flow regimes concurrent with heat transfer measurements in pipes with diameter larger than 14.1 mm. To address this gap, this thesis presents the development of a two-phase hydrogen flow cell that can address uncertainty in existing models by providing temperature, velocity, and pressure drop data while visually identifying flow regimes. Results using liquid nitrogen are provided with comparison to recent flow boiling correlations for heat transfer coefficient, pressure, quality, and velocity. Recommendations are made for correlation modification with demonstrated predictive improvement
