Fluid-Structure Interaction Comsol Model for Unsteady Flow Through a 3D Bi-Leaflet Mechanical Heart Valve
In this study, we developed a 3D Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) model using COMSOL© to analyze the unsteady flow through a bi-leaflet mechanical heart valve. The model incorporates sufficient complexity to test various factors, such as leaflet angle rotation, material selection for rigid components, fluid properties, and different simulation modes. Simultaneously, the model maintains a simplified structure and is developed using a single software platform, facilitating ease of modification and expansion by other researchers or developers. The mechanical heart valve (MHV) design was created using St. Jude’s geometric parameters as a reference. The input and output pressure waveforms are derived from interpolated ventricular and aortic pressures and were used as simulation inputs. The resulting velocity, vorticity, shear, and pressure profiles were analyzed and compared to previously published laboratory results and available clinical data from All of US Research databases for validation. The output velocity and shear stress profiles aligned strongly with published laboratory results, highlighting the model’s reliability and potential for practical use. The findings contribute to the ongoing development of computational cardiovascular simulations, bridging the gap between experimental and numerical analyses in MHV designs
Increasing and Improving Diversity and Hiring of Individuals with Disabilities In The Workplace
This paper is a literature review of several literature on disability, diversity,
human resource/human resource management, and hiring in the
workplace/organization. The research question is how can employers
improve and increase hiring of individuals with disabilities in their
organizations? The objectives of this literature review paper are 1. Research
and analyze existing literature on disability, diversity, and workplace hiring,
2. Identify any limitations in gaps in research literature, and 3. Propose and
suggest areas and topics for future research. Each of the academic sources
in this paper are presented and discussed along with analysis. Additionally,
recommendations on how to best help individuals with disabilities in the
hiring and job application/preparation process are also presented and
discussed. This literature review provides a foundational and fundamental
understanding about disability, diversity, and hiring in the workplace and
can help researchers understand those items and further their research, help
individuals with disabilities to better prepare for jobs and applications, and
help employers to better understand and support individuals with
disabilities for job and career applications and navigating the job search and
application process

Keep it Open, Keep it Ours: The Importance of Community-Owned Infrastructure in Open Access Book Publishing
When research is under attack, it is tempting to retreat into familiar ways of working and publishing. Big organisations might seem to offer security, and paywalls might look like protection against surveillance and stifling oversight.
This is misguided. Paywalls create silos, dividing haves and have-nots. They also create gated points of access: the organisation that controls the gate controls the content. Open access (OA), by contrast, liberates content from post-publication censorship and suppression, whether by publisher or government, and equality of access creates opportunities for collective action. But openness alone is not sufficient: we need community support for open publication routes to create an information ecosystem that is robust against authoritarian threats.
I will present Open Book Publishers (https://www.openbookpublishers.com/), an academic-led, non-profit, independent OA book press, as a case study in resilient, community-led, open publishing systems for OA books. The two core components in its success are: a funding model that harnesses community support rather than state or individual-fee-based funding to pay for OA publication; and participation in community-owned, non-profit infrastructure, built by the Copim community (to which we belong) supporting our own publishing and that of others.
I will explain how collective funding makes it more difficult to critically threaten OBP financially, and how, by using open, community-owned infrastructure to fund, disseminate, and archive our OA books, we rely on infrastructure that the scholarly community collectively controls. I will conclude by arguing that open, interoperable infrastructures and robust community networks are the best way to safeguard the information ecosystem against control by large organizations, whether they be corporations or governments

Influence of mate and nest-site fidelity on a declining, urban avian population
As urbanization reduces species’ habitats and population sizes, managers need information on whether within-population processes, such as changes in mate and nest-site fidelity and dispersal distances, may be contributing to declines. Few avian studies have examined changes in these behaviors in declining populations or in urban settings. We investigated whether mate fidelity, nest-site fidelity or breeding dispersal distance changed over time in a population of burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia), a short-lived, socially-monogamous species. During the 18-year period of the study, the population declined by 69% in urban Santa Clara County, California, USA-a region of rapid urbanization. We assessed whether these behaviors were influenced by key factors including age, breeding success in the previous year, and years with the same mate, and examined the relationship between mate and nest-site fidelity over time and annual reproductive success. Our analyses showed no change over time in mate fidelity rates, nest-site fidelity rates, dispersal distances or annual reproductive success, indicating these behaviors remained stable even during a severe population decline. Although burrowing owls are a short-lived species, we found that increasing years with the same mate resulted in increased nest-site fidelity and annual reproductive success. To achieve increasing annual reproductive success in this species and others with similar fidelity behaviors, nest sites and pairs must be protected over many years allowing mates to stay together in the same nest territory. Since these fidelity behaviors were maintained during the population decline, other factors require investigation to determine the causes for decreases in this population. Burrowing owls are an urban-adaptable species that can maintain important fidelity behaviors in human-altered habitats. However, even such species are subject to population declines in urban settings
Domain-Specific Aspect Extraction for Product Design
As technology advances, computers become increasingly proficient at interpreting and translating human language into machine-understandable text. With the help of algorithms in natural language processing (NLP), machines can now translate textual data. These algorithms help identify and extract specific text components known as aspects. The aspects represent specific attributes or topics within textual data. For instance, if a product review states, “This phone has good battery life but poor camera quality, and attributes like \u27battery life\u27 and \u27camera quality\u27 represent aspects in the text. Aspect extraction is a pivotal process involving identifying and isolating key features or topics within text. This research aims to compare and discuss the existing aspect extraction techniques. By effectively extracting the aspects, we will help designers gain the capability to understand and analyze sentiments, thereby enhancing their ability to derive meaningful insights from diverse textual data. Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) enables the extraction of sentiments towards specific aspects of a product the user provides. For example, when a person writes a review about a restaurant, sentiment analysis can determine whether the review is positive or negative. ABSA can separately determine the review\u27s sentiment towards different aspects of a restaurant, such as, food quality, ambiance, etc. An important input to ABSA are the aspect keywords to find in the reviews. We propose an approach to extract features/aspects from customer-based product reviews. We experiment with different word embedding and clustering techniques to identify the best set of parameters for product design. Our experiments indicate that Global Vectors (GloVe) used on Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs) yield the most insightful results for the specific problem domain
Gender-Sexuality Alliance Advisors’ COVID-19 Strategies Inform Future Responses to Sociopolitical Crises
In the spring of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a sudden shift to remote learning in schools across the United States, profoundly impacting marginalized communities, including LGBTQ+ students. This qualitative study explores the experiences of Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) advisors during this period. Drawing on interviews with 10 GSA advisors, the research highlights the structural and logistical challenges faced, such as limited access to technology and virtual-meeting fatigue, as well as the innovative solutions and adaptations made to continue supporting LGBTQ+ youth. The study reveals how GSAs leveraged existing resources, maintained group cohesion, and adjusted meeting structures to navigate the pandemic’s disruptions. The findings underscore the critical role of GSAs in providing continuity and support during crises and offer insights into best practices for sustaining these vital spaces in future sociopolitical upheavals
Self-Disclosure and Social Support in a Web-Based Opioid Recovery Community: Machine Learning Analysis
Background: The opioid crisis remains a critical public health challenge, with opioid use disorder (OUD) imposing significant societal and health care burdens. Web-based communities, such as the Reddit community r/OpiatesRecovery, provide an anonymous and accessible platform for individuals in recovery. Despite the increasing use of Reddit for substance use research, limited studies have explored the content and interactions of self-disclosure and social support within these communities. Objective: This study aims to address the following research questions: (1) What content do users disclose in the community?; (2) What types of social support do users receive?; and (3) How does the content disclosed relate to the type and extent of social support received? Methods: We analyzed 32,810 posts and 324,224 comments from r/OpiatesRecovery spanning 8 years (2014‐2022) using a mixed method approach. Posts were coded for recovery stages, self-disclosure, and goals, while comments were categorized into informational and emotional support types. A machine learning–based classifier was used to scale the analysis. Regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between post content and received support. Results: The majority of posts were made by individuals using opioids (7225/32,810, 22.0%) or in initial recovery stages (less than 1 mo of abstinence; 27.7%). However, posts by individuals in stable recovery (abstinence for more than 5 years) accounted for only 1.8%. Informational self-disclosure appeared in 88.3% (n=28,977) of posts, while emotional self-disclosure was present in 75.6% (n=24,816). Posts seeking informational support (19,153/32,810, 58.4%) were far more common than those seeking emotional support (779/32,810, 2.4%). On average, each post received 9.88 (SD 11.36) comments. The most frequent types of support were fact and situational appraisal (mean 5.62, SD 6.82) and personal experience (mean 4.88, SD 5.98), while referral was the least common (mean 0.61, SD 0.50). Regression analyses revealed significant relationships between self-disclosure and received support. Posts containing informational self-disclosure were more likely to receive advice (β=0.17, P\u3c.001), facts (β=0.30, P\u3c.001), and opinions (β=0.11, P\u3c.001). Emotional self-disclosure predicted higher levels of emotional support (β=0.17, P\u3c.001) and personal experiences (β=0.07, P\u3c.001). Posts from individuals in the addiction stage received more advice (β=−0.06, P\u3c.001) but less emotional support (β=−0.05, P\u3c.001) compared with posts from individuals in later recovery stages. Conclusions: This study highlights the role of self-disclosure in fostering social support within web-based OUD recovery communities. Findings suggest a need for increasing engagement from individuals in stable recovery stages and improving the diversity and quality of social support. By uncovering interaction patterns, this study provides valuable insights for leveraging online support groups as complementary resources to traditional recovery interventions
