Linear Algebra Concepts Through Virtual Environment
This report explores and develops the use of VR-based learning systems designed to help improve learning quality by translating abstract linear algebra concepts into immersive and interactive visual experiences. By utilizing VR platforms as a learning tool, students will be able to directly engage with concepts and objects in real time in the virtual space; covering vectors, matrices, linear systems, transformations, eigenanalysis, as well as orthogonalization. It provides an in-depth understanding in the concepts of linear algebra, as well as the modules built with respect to the given topic. This report aims to demonstrate the potential of virtual platforms as an extended educational resource for higher-level mathematics and concepts that can benefit from visual and interactive learning

Between Two Worlds: Nationality and Identity in Korean Immigrants – a Qualitative Exploration of a Sense of Belonging in California, the United States
Background: Korean immigrants are among the top five Asian immigrant groups in California. Many came to the United States with a visa or green card, and later some became U.S. citizens. One’s nationality refers to the country of their legal citizenship, but it is often also the country where they were born. As some people renounce their citizenship from their country of origin, the impact of nationality on identity and the influence of identity on nationality have yet to be studied. Methods: We conducted a qualitative study using semi-structured, in-depth interviews between March 2023 and July 2023. A total of 24 Korean immigrants in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, participated in this study. Results: Our findings revealed diverse viewpoints on U.S. citizenship among Korean immigrants. Some expressed a desire to obtain U.S. citizenship, some wished to maintain their Korean citizenship, and a few expressed ambivalence regarding the need for U.S. citizenship. In addition, we found that when citizenship is valued by both individuals and the host country, nationality becomes a more influential factor in shaping the sense of belonging. Participants discussed the connection between nationality and identity, emphasizing recurring feelings of being caught between two identities: Korean and American. Conclusion: The study suggests that increased access to mental health support and resources is needed to improve the psychological well-being of Korean immigrants. Future research is expected to reach a broader group of Korean immigrants with diverse backgrounds, locations, and experiences to make the findings more generalizable
Isolation, Identification, and Antitumor Activities of Glucosinolates and Isothiocyanates in Chinese Cabbage Seeds
Isothiocyanates (ITCs), which are derivatives of glucosinolates (GSLs) from Brassica plants, have been investigated as anticancer agents. An extensively studied anticancer ITC is sulforaphane, which is found in low amounts in Chinese cabbage. We aim to investigate the types and content of GSLs (precursors of ITCs with anticancer activity) in Chinese cabbage seeds. GSLs from Chinese cabbage seeds were isolated and purified using acidic Al2O3 column chromatography and preparative HPLC. GSL and ITC profiles were further identified using UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS. The antitumor activities of ITC (produced by exogenous enzymatic hydrolysis of GSLs) were evaluated in vitro. Seventeen GSLs and seven ITCs were identified, and the dominant GSLs were gluconapin, glucobrassicanapin, and progoitrin in Chinese cabbage seeds. High-purity gluconapin (\u3e99%) was purified. The ITCs showed synergistic-, dose-, and time-dependent effects on the inhibition of HepG2 cells, and the key ITCs were 3-butenyl ITC, sulforaphane, and 2-phenylethyl ITC. The corresponding parent GSLs were gluconapin, glucoraphanin, and gluconasturtiin, respectively. 3-Butenyl ITC could significantly induce HepG2 cell proliferation (IC50 = 89.44 μg/mL) and apoptosis (p \u3c 0.05). Our results suggested that Chinese cabbage seed could be a valuable source of natural antitumor ingredients
“I Need This Person’s Support to Have a Career” The Material and Emotional Impacts of Neoliberalism on Trans Collegians’ Classroom Experiences at a Public University
Neoliberal capitalism has undoubtedly impacted every sphere of public education in the United States. As faculty are pushed towards identity-neutral modalities of instruction, students who identify as transgender, non-binary, or other expansive gender identities (trans) are forced to reckon with implicit and explicit power dynamics in classrooms that prioritize White, cisheteropatriarchal modes of knowledge production in nuanced ways. This qualitative study explores the ways neoliberal capitalism impacts the curricular experiences of trans students by centering the power dynamics they encounter through interactions with their professors and their peers. Findings underscore the pernicious nature of the neoliberalization of higher education in advancing trans exclusion from collegiate classrooms as a hindrance towards equity in public postsecondary education. Implications for transforming curricular instruction and policy to subvert the tensions of neoliberalism are also provided
Urban Air Mobility Vertiports: A Bibliometric Analysis of Applications, Challenges, and Emerging Directions
Vertiports, as the foundational ground infrastructure for Urban Air Mobility (UAM), have garnered increasing scholarly attention in recent years. To examine how the existing literature has reviewed and summarized vertiport-related knowledge, this study conducts a bibliometric analysis of publications (2000–2024) from four major databases, including Web of Science and Scopus, using VOSviewer and CiteSpace. By analyzing co-citation and keyword co-occurrence patterns, the results suggest that vertiport research frontiers are shifting toward facility location, network planning, airspace and scheduling management, scalable infrastructure, and integration with ground transport systems. Scholars and institutions in the United States, China, Europe, and South Korea have taken leading roles in advancing this field, though collaboration among research organizations still requires strengthening. Overall, the findings reveal future research pathways and provide support for the planning and integration of vertiport infrastructure in UAM operations
Opportunistic Short-Term Water Uptake Dynamics by Subalpine Trees Observed via In Situ Water Isotope Measurements
Variations in tree water sources are important to understand in semi-arid ecosystems because climatic shifts towards lower snowpack and increased drought affect water availability in subalpine forests of the western US. Here, we use daily in situ measurements of stable isotopes (2H & 18O) in soil and tree stem water, soil matric potential and sap flow to study tree water uptake dynamics. We instrumented three soil profiles down to 90 cm, as well as three aspen and engelmann spruce trees near Gothic, Colorado, in the East River watershed. We observed the fate of natural isotopic variations in rainfall, soil, and plants from June to October 2022, and in August 2023 we conducted a 2H labeled irrigation experiment. Our observations showed that all studied aspen trees compensated for water scarcity in the shallow soil by shifting the dominant water source at 60(±20) cm to ⅔ of uptake from 90 cm within a few days of a dry period. Both species relied on snowmelt stored in the subsoil to sustain transpiration. Intense rainfall caused the plant water uptake to shift partially to top soil layers within 2 days. Spruce transpiration was lower and relied more on snowmelt, because rainfall infiltration was low in the spruce stand due to high canopy interception. Our findings highlight the important role of snowmelt stored in the deep soil layers for subalpine forest drought response and the dominant fate of monsoonal rainfall to become transpiration rather than recharging groundwater and streams in the Upper Colorado River
Characterizing Somatic Variants in Nanopore Data with Machine Learning
Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT) is a popular long-read sequencer in genomics. However, its high base-calling error rate produces several sequencing artifacts. Detection of somatic variants in ONT sequenced tumor-normal samples remains challenging due to low frequencies. In this study, machine learning was applied to a dataset created by benchmarking ClairS output against HCC1395 and colo829 truth sets to classify variants and artifacts. Relevant features were engineered from sequence context and variant site characteristics to model artifact profiles. HistGradientBoostingClassifier achieved 0.876950 accuracy, outperforming all other models. Variant quality was the top predictor with an aggregate accuracy of over 85%. This work proves that integrating variant-level features with ensemble learning offers a robust strategy to improve Nanopore-based somatic mutation detection
GraphHTAP-Bench - HTAP Benchmarking for Graph Databases
This thesis presents GraphHTAP-Bench, an HTAP benchmark for graph databases on Electronic Health Record workloads. Using the ORBDA dataset, we build a property-graph schema of longitudinal patient journeys and derive a mixed workload that combines OLTP transactions, relational-style OLAP, graph-centric analytics, and heartbeat-based freshness probes. We run Neo4j, Memgraph, and Janus- Graph under controlled arrival patterns and measure throughput, latency distributions (including tails), and commit-to-visibility freshness. The results show how scan- and traversal-heavy analytics interfere with transactional performance, how clustering changes latency and headroom, and how GraphHTAP-Bench provides reproducible guidance for selecting and tuning graph engines for EHR-style HTAP deployments
