Smart Green Energy Management for Campus: An Integrated Machine Learning and Reinforcement Learning Model
Highlights: What are the main findings? A smart green energy management system integrating machine-learning model and reinforcement learning is proposed in this work to optimize energy consumption and solar generation for a campus environment. The integrated model demonstrated superior prediction performance with an RMSE of 14.72 for energy consumption and 75.45 for solar generation. What is the implication of the main finding? An efficient solution for campuses is provided to reduce grid dependency and enhance energy sustainability. A benchmark is established for future green campus initiatives by integrating advanced machine learning and reinforcement learning techniques. The increasing demand for energy efficiency and the integration of renewable energy sources have become crucial for sustainability in modern campuses. This work presents a smart green energy management system (SGEMS) that integrates a machine learning model and reinforcement learning (RL) to optimize energy consumption and solar generation across a green campus. Using historical data from three campus buildings, we developed a predictive model to forecast short-term energy consumption and solar generation. The XGBoost algorithm, combined with RL, demonstrated superior performance in predicting energy consumption and generation, outperforming other models with a root mean square error (RMSE) of (Formula presented.), a mean absolute error (MAE) of (Formula presented.), and a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of (Formula presented.). This work proposes a web-based interface for real-time energy monitoring and decision-making, helping users forecast power shortages and manage energy usage effectively. The proposed approach provides a scalable solution for campuses aiming to reduce reliance on external grids and increase energy efficiency, setting a benchmark for future green campus initiatives
Walking through the Aristotelian Lane: Amartya Sen on Rational Choice
The term ‘rational choice’ has great impact on the life of a rational agent. Rational choice helps the agent to understand her capability of making choice and the intentional involvement for working on a particular aspect considering certain circumstances. At the same time, this creates a lot of dilemmas in terms of understanding the freewill of the agent while being committed for a work. Following this, Amartya Sen’s discussion on this subject seems relevant where Sen very prominently reflects on the point that rational choice involves freedom, rationality, and normativity. These three features are coherent with each other and with the absence of one it seems helpless to define the choice of a rational person intrinsically. The process of integration is very much important in order to characterize a choice as a ‘rational choice’. Failed to do so will surely define a person as not rational but a ‘rational fool’ as claimed by Sen. The aim of this paper is to rethink the discussion made by Amartya Sen where Sen is keeping himself into the Aristotelian Lane while defining the choice of a rational agent is not only to think about the self-interest rather going forward to act on commitment

Working With Similarities and Differences: Relational Processes in Transdisciplinary Qualitative Research With Diverse Teams
Transdisciplinary research and research teams are becoming increasingly valued in academic spaces. The potential of transdisciplinary research is that the diversity of thought and experience can create robust research processes from project inception, methodological protocol, data collection, data analysis and reporting output. Yet, transdisciplinary research teams can also bring about complications pertaining to conflicting epistemological perspectives, areas of expertise, and objectives for applied impact. In noting the benefits and downsides of transdisciplinary research, this article aims to detail how a transdisciplinary research team navigated a qualitative and participatory longitudinal research project. Drawing from a larger community-based participatory research project, the People’s Budget of San José, we detail the complexities, tensions, and successes of a transdisciplinary research team working to address complex social issues while also being attentive to community needs. Of central importance is that we illustrate how we collaborated as a transdisciplinary research team and also partnered with community-based organizations in a participatory manner. The main methodological contribution is that we highlight the power-sharing, frictions, and collaborative efforts undertaken by our transdisciplinary research team. Our intention in sharing our story is to exemplify how a transdisciplinary team functions so that future transdisciplinary research teams can be guided and build upon the transdisciplinary research process. We conclude that transdisciplinary research consisting of various people is a worthwhile endeavour with tremendous potential, but everyone must work to properly address the tensions and complexities that are likely to arise

Faculty Spotlight With Prof. Ferretti: Q&A on Critical Librarianship
In an interview with the Student Research Journal (SRJ), Prof. Jennifer Ferretti discusses the principles and impact of critical librarianship—an approach grounded in critical theory that interrogates power and inequity within libraries and archives. Drawing on her experience as a practitioner, educator, and student, she reflects on the role of critical theory in shaping library pedagogy, professional ethics, and institutional practices. Prof. Ferretti, an artist and information professional, formerly taught a course called “Building a Critical Culture: Information Ethics, Diverse Communities, and Critical Librarianship” at San Jose State University’s iSchool. She is currently the Documentation and Archives Director at the After Violence Project
