Enhancing Care: Child Protective Service Workers’ Perspectives and Experiences of Serving Children with Disabilities
Children with disabilities (CWD) are overrepresented in the child welfare system (CWS), yet limited research exists on how child protective service (CPS) workers respond. This exploratory qualitative study conducted semi-structured individual interviews with 12 CPS workers in Northern California to explore their experiences. Thematic analysis identified five key themes: contributors to maltreatment, challenges of working with CWD, the influence of personal/professional experience, collaboration with disability experts, and the need for training. Findings suggest that disability-focused training in the graduate Title IV-E program and ongoing professional training can enhance CPS workers’ competency and strengthen interactions with CWD, leading to better outcomes

Second Thoughts? Czerny, Beethoven, and the Ninth Symphony’s Choral Finale
Sometime after the premiere of the Ninth Symphony, according to Carl Czerny, Beethoven told a small circle of friends that he had made a “wrong choice” in writing a choral finale, that he was resolved to write a purely instrumental finale in its place, and that he already had an idea in his head for the new finale. Czerny never committed this report to writing, but he did transmit it orally to three others who did: Leopold von Sonnleithner, Otto Jahn, and Gustav Nottebohm. Anton Schindler would later deny the report, but the available evidence strongly supports the veracity of Czerny’s account, which carries important implications for Beethoven’s attitude toward not only the Ninth but his output in general, including the substitute finale he would in fact go on to write for the String Quartet Op. 130

Keys to Special Libraries
On February 27th, 2025, SLASC hosted a panel featuring SLA professionals who shared key insights to help students succeed in their careers. Each speaker highlighted important aspects of working in special libraries, offering real-world advice and perspectives from their own experiences. While the discussion touched on SLA’s role in the profession, the session went beyond just one organization, focusing on the broader skills, knowledge, and strategies that can support a successful career in special librarianship.https://scholarworks.sjsu.edu/slasc/1054/thumbnail.jp
Covid Cover-up: Secrecy, Censorship and Suppression during the Pandemic
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, most health authorities, governments, and mass media organizations presented a single official view concerning lockdowns, masking, distancing, and vaccines. The methods used against contrary views can be classified into four types: flooding, ignoring, censoring, and attacking. The method of information flooding involves presenting dominant views in a unified front, overwhelming contrary views by volume and consistency. The method of ignoring includes the absence of research on alternative approaches, failure to report on research contrary to orthodoxy, and not mentioning challenging views. Censoring involves active measures to prevent the circulation of contrary information and views. Attacking includes steps taken to silence and penalize scientists, doctors and others with heterodox views and campaigns to discredit alternatives to recommended approaches. These four types of methods are interrelated, forming an ecology of information control
