    A Four-Year Longitudinal Study of Effectiveness of Evidence-Based Bundle Practices for Preventing Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections in an Academic Health Care Center

    Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) significantly contribute to morbidity, prolonged hospitalization, and elevated healthcare costs, underscoring the crucial need for prevention to ensure patient safety. Despite ongoing mitigation efforts, CAUTI prevalence remained a concern in our facility at the time of this study. Catheter insertion and maintenance bundles, a recognized framework utilizing teamwork, collaboration, and focused interventions, were implemented to reduce CAUTIs and improve patient safety. This study evaluated the effectiveness of these bundles in reducing CAUTIs and catheter utilization to identify best practices for enhanced catheter management and care quality

    Contracts, Communication, and Contextual Integrity: A Case Study About Student Data Use in Higher Education

    This case study examines the contractual agreements between the University of Missouri System and the California State University System with the Educational Advisory Board (EAB), focusing on how these contracts align with institutional student data privacy policies. The research utilizes a Policy Document Analysis approach and explores both universities’ strategic plans, student data privacy guidelines, and the third-party agreements with EAB, using a Contextual Integrity framework to analyze how student data is managed and protected. Through the analysis of these documents, this dissertation investigates whether the flow of student data within the context of these contracts meets institutional privacy standards and broader ethical expectations. The findings highlight areas where the contracts align with privacy goals, as well as areas where discrepancies exist. This study offers critical recommendations for higher education institutions to better protect student data, with an emphasis on improving transparency in communication and safeguarding privacy, particularly for underrepresented students. By analyzing the intersection of contracts, communication, and data privacy, this research provides valuable insights for educational leadership in the context of third-party data use in higher education

    The Inequitable Access: Black and Latinx Students in AP Courses

    This study posits that in American high schools, the preparation of Black and Latinx students, starting from the freshman year, can be effective in helping to increase their participation in Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Structural inequities, in how schools are resourced, affect the ways in which Black and Latinx students are denied equal opportunities. On the contrary, members of their peers do obtain this kind of preparation. As a framework, Critical Race Theory (CRT) contends that race, the law, and power are deeply ingrained in maintaining established bastions of wealth and dominance. Gaps in opportunity and achievement spill over into the educational systems to maintain the status quo. Approaching the education of Black and Latinx students from a CRT perspective is essential to advance equity in the American educational system. To this end, timing is crucial, and it should not be underestimated. It starts with counselors, teachers and administrators/vice-principals from the moment Black and Latinx students enter American high schools; these educators are uniquely positioned to right the inequitable access of Black and Latinx students to AP courses in American schools. This study used a qualitative semi-structured interview protocol to document formal and informal resources and practices in place for AP course preparation of Black and Latinx freshmen and sophomores. A major finding included the need for alignment of technology integration across grade levels, and it proposed the establishment of welcoming spaces for Black and Latinx students

    Broadening Workforce Participation in Transportation: Challenges and Strategies

    This Broadening workforce participation in the transportation industry is incredibly challenging. State of practice research highlights the reasons why this lack of participation in the workforce occurs. Fortunately, there are also identified strategies for alleviating the workforce challenges. This report highlights measures that transportation organizations can take to combat some of the workforce challenges they are facing. When organizations are willing to have candid conversations and invest in meaningful policies, this can accelerate a shift in the trust and culture within an industry, making that industry more attractive to the talent pool that exists. Beyond the extensive literature review, this report describes the findings from an industry survey. The survey was distributed for a three-month data collection period, which concluded in July 2024, resulting in 996 usable survey responses. Additionally, the research team interviewed 15 transportation professionals in 2024 to gain deeper insights into the challenges and solutions to the workforce participation in the transportation industry

It examines how individuals experience and cope with the negative impacts of IT across various contexts. Discussed topics will include technostress in the workplace, students’ irresponsible use of generative AI in higher education, and cybercrime targeting vulnerable users. These studies collectively highlight how digital technologies, while beneficial, can also create significant psychological, ethical, and security challenges.     Contextualizing Introductory Computer Science: Insights from African Faculty

    Contextualizing computer science education has been recognized as a key factor in enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes. This study investigates the initial perceptions of university computer science faculty in Africa regarding the benefits, adoption challenges, and institutional support required for the successful integration of contextually relevant materials into introductory computer science (CS1) courses. Faculty then assessed a set of previously developed contextually tailored materials, grounded in Banks\u27 Additive Approach to curriculum reform and aligned to the CS curricula 2023. The research adopted qualitative methods, gathering data through open-ended surveys from 22 CS faculty across 9 African countries. Thematic analysis identified key patterns in the responses from faculty, who generally expressed positive perceptions of integrating contextualized materials. They agreed such materials could enhance engagement without distracting from core objectives, but emphasized the need for careful integration. Insights from faculty highlighted that successful implementation requires substantial institutional support, including curriculum reform, textbook development, and faculty training, with universities playing a critical role in adoption

    Post-Fire Succession in an Old-Growth Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) Forest

    In 2020, a high-intensity wildfire burned over 35,000 ha in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California, including over 1700 ha of old-growth coast redwood forest. This event created a unique opportunity to evaluate post-fire succession. We compared vegetation recovery in high versus low/moderate severity burned areas using data collected one year and four years following the fire. Random plot sampling was conducted at Big Basin Redwoods State Park to assess the regeneration of trees, shrubs, and herbaceous species. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were used to assess recovery over time and across burn severities. Results indicate significant increases in shrub cover and richness over time, with a positive association between shrub recruitment and high-severity fire. Notably, the fire-adapted species blue blossom (Ceanothus thyrsiflorus Eschsch.), which was not recorded one year following the fire, dominated the shrub layer after four years, particularly in higher severity areas. Herbaceous species also exhibited an increase in cover and richness over time, though a substantial portion of that increase was based on non-native species recruitment. Analysis did not indicate a significant relationship between fire severity and herbaceous species recovery, however. The regeneration of tree species occurred both through seedling recruitment and basal sprouting. The recruitment of basal sprouts was prolific following the fire, particularly for coast redwood. The number of basal sprouts declined significantly during the time frame of this study, as the sprouts became larger and began to self-thin. Seedling abundance, on the other hand, exhibited an approximately 30-fold increase. Seedling recruitment was primarily driven by coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens [Lamb. ex D.Don] Endl) and Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco) and was positively correlated with low/moderate fire severity. These findings underscore the complex interactions shaping post-fire forest dynamics and highlight the importance of understanding such patterns to inform management strategies that support the resiliency of coast redwood forests in an era of increasing wildfires
