The Role of Criminology in the Courtroom
Criminology and expert witness testimony play a crucial role in modern-day court proceedings. Scientific data and insights utilized in criminology can assist with seeking justice and fairness. This essay aims to provide a basis for the history of criminology and define the practice. It will explore the evolution of criminology practices and how theories have developed that are still utilized today. Furthermore, it will discuss criminologists’ many contributions as expert witnesses, including the role of ethics that criminologists must follow in court. Some key ideas presented include the methodologies criminologists use to present evidence and what standard criminologists must follow as they serve as expert witnesses. This will emphasize the importance of impartiality and truthfulness, which must be followed with their testimony. Additionally, this essay discusses real-life court cases where criminology played a fundamental role in shaping judicial outcomes. By highlighting the intersection between criminology and law, this essay will give insight into the importance of balancing scientific data and ethical standards to ensure fair and accurate practices
Investigating The Complexity Of Language Acquisition For Linguistically Diverse Children
Understanding the natural productions of children\u27s early expressive language development is important to support their development. These natural productions may also be especially complex in children with diverse linguistic backgrounds. A challenge for clinicians is how to assess these natural productions for children’s early expressive language milestones. For example, what does it mean for children to say the same word in two languages and refer to the same concept (e.g., “water” and “agua”)? Or refer to two different concepts, (e.g., “water” and “leche” (milk))? By understanding how children’s expressive language connects to conceptual understanding, clinicians can better support language learning. We examined children’s natural production of early words through caregivers’ language observations of children (n = 31, 12 - 26 months) from diverse linguistic backgrounds (e.g., English-Spanish, English-Korean). Language observations were collected daily (~ 2x/day, 5 days, 5 weeks) from a novel text-delivered survey. Descriptive data of the top 10 concepts demonstrated many different linguistic, cultural, and social aspects of early language acquisition when looking both across and within language backgrounds. Caregivers\u27 reports of children’s natural language observations also generally aligned with age expectations on ASHA milestones by using concepts. We discuss how this data can help inform an approach to clinician-family engagement for early intervention with children, which will help clinicians work in partnership with families to better understand how to apply early expressive language milestones for their individual children
Confronting the Digital Epidemic: Excessive Social Media Use (SMU) in the Wellbeing of Young Adult Populations
This study will investigate the relationship between social media as a
mediator and its effects on depressive symptoms, using Social Comparisons
theory (SCT; Festinger, 1954) as a framework. A series of 8-10 articles,
obtained through the San Jose State Library Database and PsycINFO, will
explore the nature of social media addiction (SMA) and problematic social
media use (PSMU) and its relation to self-esteem of young adult
populations by comparing theoretical perspectives (i.e., cross-sectional and
experimental designs) in the literature. Studies have found that [increased
SMU has been correlated with negative outcomes such as depression,
loneliness, and increased envy]. Future studies will be discussed

Aurora 2.0: A fluorogenic dye library for expanding the capability of protein-adaptive differential scanning fluorimetry (paDSF)
Differential Scanning Fluorimetry (DSF) is a biophysical assay that is used to estimate protein stability in vitro. In a DSF experiment, the increased fluorescence of a solvatochromatic dye, such as Sypro Orange, is used to detect the unfolding of a protein during heating. However, Sypro Orange is only compatible with a minority of proteins (\u3c 30 %), limiting the scope of this method. We recently reported that protein-adaptive DSF (paDSF) can partially solve this problem, wherein the protein is initially pre-screened against ∼300 chemically diverse dyes, termed the Aurora collection. While this approach significantly improves the number of targets amenable to DSF, it still fails to produce protein-dye pairs for some proteins. Here, we report the expansion of the dye collection to Aurora 2.0, which includes a total of 517 structurally diverse molecules and multiple new chemotypes. To assess performance, these dyes were screened against a panel of ∼100 proteins, which were selected, in part, to represent the most challenging targets (e.g. small size). From this effort, Aurora 2.0 achieved an impressive success rate of 94 %, including producing dyes for some targets that were not matched in the original collection. These findings support the idea that larger, more chemically diverse libraries improve the likelihood of detecting melting transitions across a wider range of proteins. We propose that Aurora 2.0 makes paDSF an increasingly powerful method for studying protein stability, ligand binding and other biophysical properties in high throughput
