    Carbohydrate Counting: Traditional Filipino Food Lists for Management and Prevention of Diabetes Mellitus

    The Carbohydrate Counting tool was created to address the specific dietary needs of the Filipino population. It is an original intellectual work by Ashwini Wagle, Ed.D., MS, RD, Chair of the Department of Nutrition, Food Science, and Packaging at San Jose State University (SJSU). The development of this tool was made possible through the collaboration and support of several contributors. Serena Starr, MS; Justine Martinez Cuaresma, MS, RD; Nazli Goudarzi, MS; Leah Olaivar; and Joe Johnston—a graduate student in the Department—played integral roles in the project.     A Constructive Engagement between Oxford Ordinary Language Philosophy and Latin American & Latine Liberatory Philosophy

    In this paper, I bring into dialogue a movement in Latin American social and political philosophy – which I have named Latin American and Latine Liberatory Philosophy – and a Western, or more precisely global North, philosophical movement sometimes called Ordinary Language Philosophy. By ‘Latin American and Latine Liberatory Philosophy’, I refer to a movement, adumbrated at the dawn of the 19th century and developed during the 20th century, whose guiding theme is the political, social, and cultural liberation of Latin America (and global South peoples more generally). By ‘Ordinary Language Philosophy’, on the other hand, I refer to a movement, adumbrated at Oxford at the turn of the 20th century and developed by J.L. Austin and his epigones after the Second World War, whose guiding theme is the idea that ordinary speech ought to be the starting point of philosophy. After examining some main characteristics of each of these movements, I will argue that, for all their differences, they share an important similarity: namely, both of them advocate for, and apply, a socio-historically situated philosophical method. I will conclude by gesturing at the ways in which these movements can supplement each other

    The Lasting Effects of Gun Violence on Victims and Communities

    Gun violence is a pressing public health and criminal justice issue with lasting effects on victims, families, and communities in the United States. The psychological impact of gun violence can contribute to conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and sleep deprivation. The issues are pronounced within marginalized or disadvantaged neighborhoods. The emergence of 3D-printed “ghost guns” presents further complications in the effort to regulate firearms. The United States stands out for its disproportionately high rates of firearm deaths. The findings in this paper highlight the urgent need for comprehensive prevention strategies that address both the current and future impacts of gun violence. The sooner measures for firearm storage, along with legislative efforts to reduce firearm access for high-risk individuals, past criminals, or suicidal ideations are addressed; the sooner restoration of health and trust within communities can be accomplished

    Incorporating Specialized Courses on the Prevention of Sexual Misconduct in Policing Academies

    A major problem within law enforcement is police sexual misconduct (PSM), where law enforcement officers commit sexual offenses while using the power of their position. Bonds of loyalty and trust between fellow officers are strong enough that offenders have no worries about being reported, even if they are caught. Studies have shown that most offending officers were new to the field or recently completed their training at a policing academy. Since many of the officers committing PSM were fresh out of their training, it indicates that the academy is not training its recruits properly on topics of sexual assault and harassment. Prevention efforts against PSM should start within the training academies, where the curriculum can focus on addressing social imbalances and correcting policing culture that enables PSM. Additionally, practical and scenario assessment training can also be implemented to ensure new recruits are properly trained to assess and handle cases of PSM

    How Effective Are Engineered And Non-engineered Riparian Forest Restoration Projects In Providing Salmonid-quality Habitat In The San Francisco Bay Area?

    Streams and their riparian zones in the San Francisco Bay Area have been degraded, severely harming salmonid populations in the region. Ecological restoration is a common approach to return stream function. Such restoration projects vary widely in intensity, from low-impact vegetation removal/planting to highly engineered projects involving structures and grading. This research investigated the effectiveness of streams restored using engineered versus non-engineered solutions in supporting salmonid habitat viability in San Francisco Bay Area streams. Fourteen streams, seven from each of the two types of restoration, were sampled in the wet and dry season in 2024, three times each season. Data on temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, nitrite, turbidity, canopy density, vegetation species richness/diversity, stream depth, and width were collected and analyzed with a range of descriptive and inferential statistics. Results showed that none of the parameters differed between the two restoration types in the dry season and differed only with respect to temperature in the wet season. Riparian vegetation species diversity did differ between engineered and non-engineered sites in either season. In both seasons, all restored streams tended to meet established salmonid quality thresholds. This study indicated that: 1) both engineered and non-engineered restoration sites were able to, under appropriate conditions, meet salmonid habitat water quality targets and 2) restoration designers should only perform engineered projects when absolutely necessary

    Understanding User Behaviors: Impact of a 28-Day Intervention on Screen Time and Problematic Internet Use

    This thesis examines a 28-day self-monitoring intervention to reduce problematic internet use among undergraduate Instagram users. A quasi-experimental factorial mixed design with a repeated measures component was used, with participants split into an experimental group (daily Instagram screen time logging) and a control group (reporting Instagram interactions). Problematic Internet use was measured using the Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale 2 (GPIUS2). Results showed no reduction in problematic internet use in the experimental group compared to the control, nor a correlation between screen time changes and problematic internet use. However, the experimental group showed a modest decrease in mean screen time from week 1 to week 4. No gender differences were found. Monitoring screen time alone may not reduce problematic internet use. Future research should explore more comprehensive interventions addressing online social interaction preferences, mood regulation, alternative self-monitoring methods, and individual differences to promote healthier digital well-being

    The Relationship Between The Dark Triad And Perceived Career Mobility: The Moderating Role Of Perceived Organizational Support

    Prior research on career mobility has found that personality is not a strong predictor of career mobility. However, these studies have mainly focused on the Big Five personality traits and have not looked into other personality traits as predictors. The present study has looked into alternate personality traits and their relationship with perceived internal and external career mobility. These traits were the Dark Triad traits, consisting of Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy. The present study hypothesized that each of the Dark Triad traits would positively predict both perceived internal and external career mobility and that perceived organizational support (POS) would moderate the relationship between each of the Dark Triad traits and perceived internal and external career mobility. Data were collected from a total of 105 participants via an online survey. Although the results of this study did not find support for the hypotheses, they revealed that POS was significantly related to both perceived internal and external career mobility. Participants who felt supported and valued by their organizations were more likely to believe they could make transitions within their organization but less likely to believe that they could make transitions outside their organization. This study\u27s results suggest that to improve their employees’ perception of their internal career mobility, organizations should provide support to their employees such as through increasing employee autonomy

    STEAD: Spatio-Temporal Efficient Anomaly Detection for Time and Compute Sensitive Applications

    This paper presents a new method for anomaly detection in automated systems with time and compute sensitive requirements, with unparalleled efficiency. As these systems become increasingly popular, ensuring their safety has become more important than ever. Therefore, this paper focuses on how to quickly and effectively detect various anomalies in the aforementioned systems, with the goal of making them safer and more effective. Many detection systems have been developed with great success under spatial contexts; however, there is still significant room for improvement when it comes to temporal context. While there is substantial work regarding this task, there is minimal work done regarding the efficiency of models and their ability to be applied to scenarios that require real-time inference. To address this gap, we propose STEAD (Spatio-Temporal Efficient Anomaly Detection), whose backbone is developed using (2+1)D Convolutions and Performer Linear Attention, which ensures computational efficiency without sacrificing performance. When evaluated on the UCF-Crime benchmark, the base model, STEAD-Base, achieves an AUC of 91.34%, outperforming the previous state-of-the-art, while a smaller, faster version of the model, STEAD-Fast, achieves an AUC of 88.87%, while having 99.70% less parameters and outperforming the previous state-of-the-art as well.     Stream Response to a Dam Removal: Mill Creek, Davenport, Ca

    Dams have many effects on stream morphology and ecology, including a loss of sediment supply downstream, reduced access to the entire stream for aquatic fauna, and a flooded area upstream of the dam. Dams are a hurdle for migrating organisms such as anadromous fish, which is a group of concern. An over 100-year-old dam on Mill Creek, a stream draining a coastal watershed in central California, was removed in the fall of 2021. The site is in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where endangered salmonids such as steelhead, Oncorhynchus mykiss, have historically lived. To study the change in the stream from the dam removal, pebble counts were conducted and cross sections were surveyed along Mill Creek and downstream of its confluence with its trunk stream before the removal and were repeated twice after the removal, once in the winter shortly after removal and once about one year post-removal. The winter survey included 20 cross sections upstream of the Mill Creek and San Vicente Creek confluence, and the summer survey included all 27 cross sections in the study site. The reach upstream of the dam eroded significantly and median grain size increased at the furthest upstream cross sections and fined slightly closer to the dam after the removal. Downstream of the dam site, cross section sites eroded and aggraded in different zones, and overall median grain size increased. In general, sediment eroded from the channel and banks, and the percentage of grain sizes beneficial for salmon spawning increased
