    Tracking Removed and At-Risk Government Information

    The current U.S. administration is intentionally undermining public access to information as well as scholarly research by removing documents, reports, datasets, images, and language from government websites. In doing so, this administration is withholding publicly-funded information that we have a right to access, including data from government-sponsored research, historical information about marginalized groups, and speech transcripts. In removing these materials, the government is also deliberately sabotaging research related to topics it does not like, such as LGBTQ health, COVID, and climate change. It is difficult to grasp the scope of this problem: how do we know when something is gone, and how can we measure how much has been removed? We are grateful for amazing rescue and tracking efforts focused on government data, who have led the way on the effort to salvage this information. We believe it is also important to track missing documents, removed websites, and modified language, which can be more challenging to quantify. The Tracking Gov Info project is a crowdsourcing effort to track removed and modified government information and resources and to point people to archived copies of content whenever possible. Join us to hear what we’ve learned through our project so far about the history of this topic, scope of current information loss and censorship, the challenges of documenting these attacks on information, and how attendees can get involved

    Access Denied: Defending Research in a Shrinking Scholarly Landscape

    In early 2025, the U.S. Department of Education announced a reduction in the indexing of key journals in the ERIC database. As government censorship increasingly threatens the accessibility of educational research, librarians are emerging as critical defenders of open access and research transparency. This presentation reports on the proactive efforts of a Canadian academic librarian who developed actionable workarounds to address the disappearance of articles from ERIC. These missing records pose a significant challenge to researchers conducting knowledge syntheses, who face a reporting and reproducibility crisis when search results fluctuate or shrink without explanation. The implications are profound: systematic reviews may be compromised, and the scholarly record distorted. To mitigate this loss, this presentation will highlight methods to preserve the scholarly record, even when external forces alter or restrict access to previously available research. The session will also explore cross-disciplinary partnerships and initiatives that librarians can adapt to strengthen their advocacy and technical responses. Finally, the presentation will critically examine the ongoing corporatization of information once considered freely accessible. As proprietary interests increasingly shape the availability of research data, librarians must confront a growing unknown: how to safeguard open knowledge in an era of privatized access. This session invites researchers, librarians, and concerned citizens to collaborate on defending the foundations of scholarly inquiry

    The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Data Privacy: A Risk Management Perspective

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to increase the artificial intelligence (AI) ethical literacy of information governance professionals by explaining how AI intensifies familiar data privacy issues by virtue of its dependency on data and ability to create new personal information, to explicate emerging privacy enhancing methods and to show their continuity with existing privacy and information governance principles. Design/methodology/approach: The paper uses an interdisciplinary design research methodology that extends current governance frameworks by combining information science, information governance and applied ethics concepts. Three information sources were referenced: 1) academic papers; 2) standards and best practices published by governmental and nongovernmental organizations and professional associations; and 3) white papers, market research and vendor reports. The literature review was informed by real-world implementation knowledge and anecdotal evidence to identify privacy risks when using AI. Useful tools, techniques and governance approaches to manage and mitigate the risks associated with digital privacy and ethics when using AI are identified and discussed. Findings: The paper analyzes the relationship between different approaches to AI (e.g. symbolic-deductive, machine learning and deep learning) and levels of privacy risks. It identifies risk reduction methods (e.g. differential privacy) and relates these to extant privacy principles such as data minimization. Finally, the paper shows the continuity between information governance practices and newly emerging AI governance and risk frameworks. Originality/value: The authors present useful tools and techniques and discuss them from a business perspective, using the lens of information governance to mitigate AI-related privacy risks. The authors also discuss how design techniques and technologies can help minimize data collection of sensitive information and can be used to anonymize sensitive data when training AI models

    Spherical and Sessile Droplet Dynamics by Fluctuating Hydrodynamics

    We simulate the mesoscopic dynamics of droplets formed by phase-separated fluids at nanometer scales where thermal fluctuations are significant. Both spherical droplets fully immersed in a second fluid and sessile droplets which are also in contact with a solid surface are studied. Our model combines a Cahn-Hilliard formulation with incompressible fluctuating hydrodynamics; for sessile droplets, the fluid-solid contact angle is specified as a boundary condition. Deterministic simulations with an applied body force are used to measure the droplets\u27 mobility from which a diffusion coefficient is obtained using the Einstein relation. Stochastic simulations are independently used to obtain a diffusion coefficient from a linear fit of the variance of a droplet\u27s position with time. In some scenarios, these two measurements give the same value but not in the case of a spherical droplet initialized near a slip wall or in the case of sessile droplets with large contact angles ( ≥ 90 ° ) on both slip and no-slip surfaces

    (Missed) Opportunities to Build Solidarity: A Critical Analysis of Spanish-English Bilingual Children’s Books

    Two-way dual language (TWDL) programs have traditionally served white and non-Black Latinx students, with limited attention to other cultures and races. This limitation can result in the erasure of Afro-Latinx culture from bilingual programs. This study explores the ways Black characters are represented in bilingual picturebooks, which can serve to perpetuate or combat anti-blackness within bilingual education. We completed a critical content analysis of Spanish-English bilingual picturebooks that include Black or Afro-Latinx characters, employing LatCrit and BlackCrit theoretical frameworks to explore how Black characters are positioned. Findings show a significant dearth of bilingual books that include Black or Afro-Latinx characters. Additionally, in the 18 books identified, there was a wide range in how the Black characters were positioned, from passive receivers of white authority to activists working toward social justice. Implications for bilingual education programs are discussed

    Building Consensus for School Librarian Collaboration: A Delphi Study

    This Delphi study engaged 38 national experts in school librarianship to develop a consensus-based model of school librarian collaboration (SLC) that reflects current practice. Through three iterative rounds the panel achieved strong consensus on a definition of SLC, a framework representing a continuum of collaborative practice, and necessary conditions for success. The resulting definition of SLC is an educator-to-educator partnership to enhance student learning through complementary expertise that develops over time and is built on mutual trust, shared goals, and open communication. The seven levels continuum of SLC are: Autonomy, Curation, Contribution, Coordination, Integration, Partnership, and Assurance. These levels allow practitioners to identify current collaborative practice and plan for growth. This work extends prior theoretical models by incorporating critical environmental, cultural, and dispositional factors that impact collaborative efforts and by creating tools to operationalize the consensus model for practitioners

    Progressive Oxygenation of the North Atlantic Subpolar Gyre

    The subpolar North Atlantic (SPNA) is one of the few regions where the deep ocean is in direct contact with the atmosphere, making it a key location for interior ocean ventilation through gas exchange. We use a novel observation-based data product to analyze large-scale patterns of the air-sea flux of oxygen, finding a mean annual flux of 48.1 (Formula presented.) 14.6 Tmol (Formula presented.) from the atmosphere into the ocean integrated over the SPNA ((Formula presented.) N– (Formula presented.) N). An analysis of a fully-closed oxygen budget from the data-assimilative ECCO-Darwin ocean biogeochemistry model suggests that the net uptake is counteracted by oxygen removal through ocean circulation and mixing. Over an annual cycle, a SPNA oxygen uptake of 63.6 (Formula presented.) 13.8 Tmol at densities greater than 26.7 kg (Formula presented.) drives a wintertime oxygen increase in corresponding mode and deep water layers. 87% of this net annual uptake occurs in the density range of subpolar mode water (SPMW), 26.7 kg (Formula presented.) 27.63 kg (Formula presented.), in the upper branch of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). Our results demonstrate that oxygen is injected during mode water formation throughout the subpolar gyre\u27s cyclonic pathway from the North Atlantic Current toward the Labrador Sea. Along this path, SPMW becomes progressively denser and more oxygenated, and is ultimately transformed into Labrador Sea Water which exports the accumulated oxygen to the global ocean in the lower branch of the AMOC
