    The Transportation Sector, Cap-and-Trade and Blockchain: A Carbon Credit Trading Platform

    This study offers a solution that facilitates direct trading of carbon credits with no intermediaries by using blockchain technology aligned with the cap-and-trade system. With this solution, along with other major transformations in the industry, the transportation sector can take more ownership of emissions and mitigate the impact of its role as the largest contributor of greenhouse gasses. The solution sits at the confluence of the Cap-and-Trade initiative, carbon credit trading, and blockchain technology. Although the concept of blockchains has been the subject of significant curiosity, scrutiny, boosterism, investment, criticism, it most importantly is at the core of useful, rapidly growing innovations. The technology is critical because it removes the need for costly intermediaries for the successful functioning of complex systems. More specifically, the technology has demonstrated that value and asset trading can take place securely and meticulously in the absence of middlemen such as financial intermediaries and other brokers. This study shows how a democratized trading system for carbon credit trade can be constructed in which the parties conduct trades directly, with no third-party involvement, speeding up the process and potentially making it more secure and efficient. This intersection of cap-and-trade and blockchain may increase global participation in peer-to-peer exchange, which will help increase universal participation in carbon offset credits trading and allow the transportation sector to contribute actively to both short- and long-term climate change solutions

    Are California’s Local Jurisdictions Disproportionately Directing Growth Toward Existing Disadvantaged Communities? Evidence from the Southern California and San Francisco Bay Area Regions

    Communities across the United States are striving to promote smart urban growth through compact urban infill residential development. They are doing so to mitigate sprawl\u27s negative fiscal, environmental, social, and physical impacts, strengthen land use-housing-transportation linkages, and develop at densities needed for well-functioning public transit. Some states, such as California, have gone a step further by linking compact urban infill development as critical to meeting greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets. Anecdotal evidence suggests some California local jurisdictions are planning disproportionately large amounts of new urban development in disadvantaged communities (DACs). However, empirical evidence is lacking. This study aims to fill this gap. Using the two most populated regions of the state—the San Francisco Bay Area (S.F. Bay Area) and Southern California (SoCal)—as case studies, this research finds that the new housing is disproportionately planned in DACs in both the case study regions. Specifically, of the areas earmarked for future growth, close to a quarter (22%) are disadvantaged in the S.F. Bay Area region and close to half (48%) in the SoCal region. Meanwhile, the total area of the region that is disadvantaged is only 14% and 26%, respectively. These findings are critical for equity implications in policy and planning in these areas and beyond

    The Effects of Full-Body Photo-Editing on Female Body Image

    Over the past decade, the use of photo-based social media sites has seen an exponential increase. Although these sites can be beneficial for connecting with others, the editing and modification of images posted to social media has also produced adverse effects on some who use them. The aim of the present study was to assess whether partaking in a full-body photo-editing task would have a significant effect on weight dissatisfaction, appearance dissatisfaction and body confidence, compared to a control condition. Female college participants were first asked about their general Instagram use, and then were given a baseline Visual Analog Scale (VAS) to measure for appearance dissatisfaction, weight dissatisfaction and body confidence. Participants were then randomly assigned into two experimental groups: editing a full-body image of themselves (experimental) and not editing (control). After the experimental condition, participants in both the control and experimental condition were given another VAS measuring for differences in overall weight dissatisfaction, appearance dissatisfaction and body confidence. Lastly, participants were given the Selfie-Photo Manipulation and Investment scales to assess how they edit their self-photos outside of the lab session. Results indicated that while there was not a statistically significant difference in means between the control and experimental groups, there was still a small effect found as a result of the photo-editing task for both weight and appearance dissatisfaction, compared to the control condition

    The Moderating Role of Meaningful Work on the Relationship between Loss of Self-Identity and Psychological Well-Being in Retired Collegiate Athletes

    Collegiate athletes are a focal point for many universities. These student-athletes work most of their lives to make it to the university level. Many collegiate athletes aspire to make it to the professional level after they graduate from college, but only a rare handful make it to the top. The rest of the athlete population retires and is placed into a world of “normalcy,” but the transition out of athletics can be very challenging, impacting a person’s psychological well-being. Most of these athletes will have to work a professional job after leaving sports. The present study aimed to examine the moderating effect of meaningful work on the relationship between the loss of self-identity and psychological well-being. A sample of 89 retired collegiate athletes completed an online survey measuring the loss of self-identity, perceived levels of meaningful work, and psychological well-being. The results showed a strong relationship between the loss of self-identity and experience of lower psychological well-being, while meaningful work had a non-significant moderating effect. Results of exploratory analyses found that women, athletes under the age of 24, those who attended junior colleges, and those who were forced to retire due to reasons such as injury, were more heavily impacted by the loss of their self-identity. These findings stress the importance of athletes having the proper tools to prepare for their retirement from sports

    Into the Deep: Effects of Natural and Artificial Substrates in the Deep Sea

    With increasing maritime activities, man-made structures like oil platforms, wind farms, and lost shipping containers are becoming ubiquitous in the oceans. These structures serve as substrate for organisms and there is evidence that unique communities develop on some structures; however, the effects of substrate type vary and are often confounded with geography and depth. Objects lost in shallow water are more likely to be retrieved than those in the deep sea, resulting in a long-term repository at depth. We studied benthic invertebrate communities on a lost shipping container (1.3 km) and deployed experimental structures (200 m) to assess whether colonization and succession differ between natural and artificial substrates in the deep sea. Observations of the container spanning 17 years indicated changes in the diversity and abundance of its biological assemblage over time, becoming more similar to the naturally occurring substrate in Monterey Submarine Canyon. Communities on the experimental artificial substrates were similar to those found on experimental natural substrates, with no significant difference (p\u3e0.05) in community metrics based on substrate type. These metrics varied significantly across all experimental structures over time, indicating that assemblages on the substrates may have undergone successional changes at similar rates with a major shift after 5 years. In general, lost anthropogenic debris may serve as substrate for benthic invertebrate communities similar to those that form on naturally occurring hard substrates, making large anthropogenic pollutants a potential subject for future wildlife management and monitoring efforts

    Construction, Emplacement, and Structure of Cretaceous Plutons in the Ebbetts Pass Region, North-Central Sierra Nevada Batholith, California

    Field, petrographic, and geochronologic analyses were conducted for five Cretaceous plutons in the North-Central Sierra Nevada batholith to better understand their construction, emplacement, and deformation histories. All the plutons in the study area were constructed incrementally, but timing and degrees of mixing between increments vary. The lack of internal contacts and heterogeneity in the interiors of the Stanislaus Meadow and Ebbetts Pass plutons suggest that there were sizeable magma chambers where there was thorough mixing of increments. The West of Elbow, Lookout Peak, and Kinney Lakes plutons were constructed from small batches of magma based on their textural and compositional heterogeneity. Plutons in the study area were emplaced via multiple emplacement mechanisms including stoping and assimilation, ductile flow, and magmatic wedging. Direct evidence for roof uplift, floor depression, or dilation by faults is absent in the plutons. NW-striking magmatic foliations in the Stanislaus Meadow, Ebbetts Pass, and Lookout Peak plutons are discordant to contacts and subparallel to regional foliation, recording regional strain. Margin-parallel magmatic foliations reflect complex internal magmatic processes. Solid-state structures include foliations and lineations, which formed by regional tectonic strain. The origin of widespread small-scale ductile shear zones in the Lookout Peak tonalite remains enigmatic. Overall, magmatic structures and construction processes in the studied plutons are similar to those elsewhere in the Sierra Nevada batholith

    Golden Rule Ethics and Complementary Learning Process with the Other: from Confucius’ and Christian Approaches to Hatatas’ Approach

    Through the development of a comparative analysis that explores the conceptions of the Golden Rule that are expressed in the teachings of Confucius, Christianity and the Hatatas, the article shows that the combined insights that emerge from these three teachings have a contemporary significance in the attempt to develop a complementary learning process with the Other. Throughout its variations, the Golden Rule is grounded on the need to treat others as how we want to be treated. Such a moral vision occupies a central importance in Confucius’s ren, Christianity’s Gospel of Matthew and the commandments, and the Hatatas’ principle of harmony. The comparative exercise in contending conceptions of the Golden Rule that are found in Confucius’, the Christian and the Hatatas’ approaches leads into the emergence of a learning process that goes beyond the mere tolerance of the Other. In a globalized world, where there is a search for a moral guideline that can serve as a common source of motivation, the Golden Rule can serve as a foundation of a process of learning that is mutually supportive, supplementary and is hence complementary
