    Variability in undergraduate academic stress: the role of ethnicity, early adverse family experiences, and psychological distress

    Early adverse family experiences (e.g., abuse, neglect, and family conflict) can create vulnerabilities that can alter the association between psychological distress and academic stress, particularly for some ethnic groups. This study examined whether the link between psychological distress and academic stress varies in the presence of early adverse family experiences across ethnic groups. Participants (N = 284, 38.4% male, 59.5% female, 1% non-binary, and 0.7% transgender, 56.5% European American, 15.6% African American, 12.6% Hispanic and Latino, 8.5% Asian, 6.8% Mixed/Biracial) self-reported psychological distress, early adverse family experiences, and perception of academic stress. Regression analyses revealed a three-way interaction between adverse family experiences, ethnicity, and psychological distress significantly accounting for academic stress. Simple slope analyses indicated that academic stress increased with psychological distress, only for African Americans with adverse family experiences. The relation between psychological distress and academic stress is complex, likely varying with both ethnicity and adverse family experiences. These results highlight how early-life African American family-level factors can buffer against academic stress during emerging adulthood, potentially enhancing long-term outcomes related to education and achievement. Future work developing culturally informed interventions for reframing psychological distress or adverse life experiences could have dramatic impacts at this key developmental stage

    Evidence-Based Strategies for Novice Teachers: Increasing the Participation of Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder in Integrated Physical Education

    Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a pervasive developmental disorder that impacts approximately 1 in 36 students. Because of its high prevalence, it is likely that all physical education teachers will serve students with ASD during their careers. Although physical education leads to many improvements in students’ physical and social skills, students with ASD may experience challenges in the integrated physical education setting due to various factors, including motivation, skill proficiency, challenging behaviors, and sensory stimulation. The purpose of this article is to describe the challenges faced by some students with ASD in integrated physical education and to provide novice teachers with possible behavioral strategies to address these challenges

    Early Detection of Lameness in Dairy Cattle Using Activity Data, Image Analysis, AI and ML - An Approach for Improved Animal Welfare and Economic Impact

    The economic burden of lameness in dairy cattle is a significant challenge facing the worldwide dairy industry. Studies suggest that it can cost the industry billions of dollars annually, with the exact cost varying by region. In the United States, the cost of lameness is estimated to be approximately $2 billion per year, while in the United Kingdom, it is around £200 million per year. These costs include lost milk production, decreased fertility, and treatment expenses. The impact of lameness on dairy cattle is far-reaching, posing a significant economic burden on farmers and countries and affecting animal welfare, milk production, and farm profitability. It is particularly concerning for small and marginal farmers, who are vulnerable to economic and financial sustainability concerns. Early detection and prevention of lameness are crucial to reducing these costs and improving the overall health and productivity of dairy herds. Prevalence rates vary globally, ranging from 17% to 35% in dairy herds, underscoring the urgent need for innovative solutions. Our proposed paper offers a novel approach to addressing this challenge. By combining activity data captured by Cow Necklace IoT Sensor and image analysis with Computer Vision, alongside expert veterinarian input, we provide a comprehensive and data-driven solution for early lameness detection in dairy cattle. This approach has the potential to significantly improve animal welfare, farm management practices, and overall herd productivity, leading to substantial economic benefits for farmers and the agricultural sector as a whole

    Transpacific Rhizomatic Migration in Kyoung H. Park’s Mina: Settler Desire and Identity Formation in Korean-Latin American Literature in the U.S.

    The Korean diaspora to the United States is a phenomenon that has long been analyzed for its sociocultural, political, and economic implications. However, generally ignored by scholarship of frameworks such as the transpacific is Korean-Latin American remigration to the United States. Korean migration to Latin America and this group’s subsequent migration to the US was motivated largely by economic factors such as the availability of Latin American agricultural labor in the mid-1960s and the growth of Korean-American professional communities during the 1980s. Situating this migration in a transpacific framework improves our understanding of settler colonial desire and identity formation. I analyze the short play Mina by Kyoung H. Park, a work that draws upon the author’s personal experience, as a cultural/literary documentation of this phenomenon. Using textual evidence, I argue that settler colonial desires are rooted deep within the overlapping effects of imperialism in this complex migration pattern

    Impact of using project management tools and techniques on project and firm performance

    Purpose: This research aims to empirically examine perceived predictive relationships between the use of project management tools and techniques (PMTTs) and resulting project-level and firm-level performance. Design/methodology/approach: This study used data gathered from 190 project management professionals engaged in strategic projects. Data were collected using a survey tool that drew on prior project management research studies and asked about the use of 49 PMTTs. The conceptual model hypothesized positive relationships between the use of PMTTs and the project management outcomes, project-level performance and firm-level performance. Hypotheses were tested using PMTT components extracted through an exploratory factor analysis of the PMTTs as independent variables and project and firm performance as dependent variables. Six factors that emerged as independent variables (subsets of PMTTs) were labeled per managerial focus (e.g. quality management and cost management). The extracted dependent variables were one factor representing project-level performance and one factor representing firm-level performance. The hypothesized relationships between independent and dependent variables were tested using linear regression analysis. Findings: PMTTs were found to contribute positively to project management outcomes, both project-level performance and firm-level performance. For the sample of strategic projects considered, practices used for time and resource planning, quality management and supplier management were found to positively and significantly impact project-level performance. Practices used for time and resource planning and scope management of tasks and interdependencies were found to positively and significantly impact firm-level performance. Practices used for cost management and risk management were not found to have a significant impact on project management outcomes for the sample of strategic projects studied. Practical implications: This study validates the positive relationship between the use of PMTTs and both project-level and firm-level performance. It also suggests that while there is a collective of PMTTs that are considered standard practice, some PMTTs may more significantly predict project management performance than others in specific project and organizational contexts. Originality/value: The study used a survey tool that draws on prior research and collected a new dataset on strategic projects to contribute to understanding the importance of different subsets of PMTTs for both project success and a firm’s competitive advantage

    This book focuses on the theoretical aspects of calculus. The book begins with a chapter on set theory before thoroughly discussing real numbers, then moves onto sequences, series, and their convergence. The author explains why an understanding of real numbers is essential in order to create a foundation for studying analysis. Since the Cantor set is elusive to many, a section is devoted to binary/ternary numbers and the Cantor set. The book then moves on to continuous functions, differentiations, integrations, and uniform convergence of sequences of functions. An example of a nontrivial uniformly Cauchy sequence of functions is given. The author defines each topic, identifies important theorems, and includes many examples throughout each chapter. The book also provides introductory instruction on proof writing, with an emphasis on how to execute a precise writing style

    Age-Related Motives for Substance Use and Outcomes Among Veteran Patients Receiving Detoxification Services: A Longitudinal Study

    Objectives: Study objectives were to examine (1) baseline differences in substance use motives (social, coping, enhancement, and physical discomfort) among older, middle-aged, and younger adults, and (2) whether age group moderated associations between substance use motives at baseline and substance use outcomes at six-month follow-up. Design: Participants were assessed at baseline and followed for six months (91.1%). Setting: U.S. military veterans receiving alcohol and/or opioid detoxification services. Participants: 298 participants in a study of telephone monitoring to improve detoxification outcomes. Measurements: Baseline substance use motives were measured using the Motives for Alcohol and Drug Use questionnaire. At baseline and 6-month follow-up, substance use, substance use risk, and substance use protection were measured using the Brief Addiction Monitor. Results: One-way analyses of variance with post-hoc tests found that older adults endorsed significantly lower social and coping motives for substance use than younger and middle-aged adults, and significantly lower enhancement motives than younger adults. Moderation models were analyzed using linear regression, with demographics controlled. Significant interactions of motives with age group revealed that higher endorsement of enhancement motives for substance use was associated with less protection against substance use among older adults but not among younger or middle-aged adults. Conclusions: Enhancement motives among older adults may represent a specific age-related risk for substance use. Older adults who use substances to enhance their mood and well-being may need additional resources and skills for improving mental health so that unhealthy substance use is reduced or avoided

    Use of Polymer Fiber to Improve Mechanical Properties of HMA Containing Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP)

    A great percentage of highways and roads in California are constructed with Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), and, as California infrastructure ages, these highways and roads must be maintained and rehabilitated. Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) is considered an excellent alternative to virgin (raw, unprocessed) materials because it reduces the use of virgin aggregate and binder. Also, the use of RAP decreases the amount of construction waste placed into landfills. This laboratory study investigated the effect of two different commercial polymer fibers on the mechanical properties of HMA with RAP. Three different HMA with RAP mixes were used in the study. One mix that is commonly utilized on the Central Coast contained 15% RAP while the second and third mixes contained 25% and 40% RAP, respectively. Three different fiber dosages (0.05%, 0.10%, and 0.15% of the total mix) were investigated. Specimens were prepared and tested for rutting and moisture sensitivity in a Hamburg Wheel Tracker (HWT) and for Cracking Tolerance Index (CTI). Test results showed that adding fibers improved resistance to rutting for mixes with RAP content higher than 25%. The use of fiber improved resistance to cracking at intermediate temperatures for all mixes with RAP contents. Also, adding fibers improved mixes’ resistance to moisture damage. In addition, one of the two fibers used in the study outperformed the other. Overall, results indicate that adding polymer fibers to HMA mixes containing RAP has the potential to improve mixes’ resistance to rutting, moisture damage and cracking, depending on fiber dosage and type. This study offers information valuable to the maintenance and rehabilitation of roads and highways in California and beyond
