Educational setbacks and psycho-emotional effects of the Covid-19 pandemic during clinical education of undergraduate nursing students, South-Africa
The pandemic has presented unprecedented challenges to healthcare and nursing education. Clinical exposure provides students the opportunity to acquire knowledge and prepare for their professional responsibilities. A high-quality, safe clinical learning environment is essential for fostering students\u27 professional and academic development, which has been adversely affected by the global pandemic. To investigate the educational challenges and psycho-emotional impacts of the pandemic on the clinical teaching of undergraduate nursing students at a university in Gauteng, South Africa. A qualitative exploratory and descriptive technique was employed, utilising semi-structured face-to-face interviews that were audio recorded. Purposive sampling was utilised, and 25 persons expressed interest in participating; however, data saturation was achieved with 15 participants. Participation was voluntary, and participants\u27 information was maintained in a confidential and private manner. Thematic data analysis was conducted, revealing themes related to educational setbacks necessitating adjustments, including hybrid learning as an alternative clinical teaching and learning method, simulation as an alternative clinical teaching and learning method, extension of training, absenteeism from clinical areas, and NEI unpreparedness for the pandemic. The categories of Reluctance at clinical settings, Anxiety and Fear, Stress, Regret, and Loss of Hope constituted the theme of Psycho-emotional consequences. This research indicated that undergraduate nursing students encountered considerable educational challenges and psychological distress during clinical instruction amid the epidemic. Consequently, it is essential to raise awareness that NEIs should be better equipped for pandemics of this sort. It required all stakeholders to evaluate and formulate strategies for professional nursing education during pandemics in conjunction with students
Reassessing bilateral trade flows of an emerging economy through structural gravity: Case from Turkey
The findings underscore the significance of institutional stability and macro-financial predictability in maintaining export performance in volatile emerging economies. Enhancing regulatory quality, bolstering macro-financial stability, and augmenting enterprises\u27 capacity to manage risk will facilitate more robust export results. Incorporating institutional and financial frictions directly into gravity models offers a more accurate framework for policy assessment. This research employs a structural gravity model, estimated using Poisson pseudo maximum likelihood, to analyse Turkey\u27s bilateral export flows to 164 partner nations from 1996 to 2020. Political stability and exchange rate volatility are integrated as time-varying institutional and financial frictions. Indices of economic scale, geographical distance, and remoteness are incorporated to maintain alignment with structural gravity theory. The political stability of destination nations is a crucial positive factor influencing Turkish exports and signifies the existence of a governance premium. Exchange rate fluctuation exerts a sustained adverse impact, diminishing the anticipated advantages of nominal depreciation. Visual data indicates two consistent behavioural tendencies. Exporters are increasingly venturing into politically risky countries; yet, long-term export growth is constrained by institutional inertia and robust network dependencies. The findings indicate that institutional reliability and macro-financial predictability are crucial for maintaining export performance in volatile emerging economies. Enhanced regulatory quality, greater macro-financial stability, and superior firm-level risk management are essential for achieving more resilient export outcomes. Incorporating institutional and financial frictions directly into gravity models offers a more accurate framework for comprehending trade dynamics and formulating effective policies
Knowledge and barriers to exclusive breastfeeding among mothers in Gauteng province, South Africa
The World Health Organization’s recommendation of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) of babies within the first six months of life has been considered a milestone for enhancing the survival rate of the children and the well-being of the mothers. The adoption of EBF among South African mothers, however, remains a concern since it has not yet attained the recommended standards globally. This was a quantitative cross-sectional study undertaken among 399 mothers of children between the ages of 6 and 24 months who accessed immunization services at three clinics that were selected using a random sampling procedure. The study employed systematic sampling to get the subjects. Data collection used a structured questionnaire that focused on the level of knowledge, practices, and factors inhibiting the practice of EBF. There was a good level of maternal knowledge of EBF, with 98.2% having good knowledge, mostly attained through interaction with healthcare providers. All mothers practiced breastfeeding, but only 19.1% breastfed immediately after delivery. There was poor compliance with EBF, yet the majority (60%) introduced nothing but breast milk, although a large proportion (35.6%) introduced formula feeds and solid foods before the age of six months. There were no significant relations between knowledge and both socio-demographic and other factors (all p>0.05). The predominant factors that hindered the practice of EBF included reduced maternal autonomy (16.3%), fear of breasts sagging (6.8%), fear of low milk production (6.0%), maternal illness and preterm delivery, work constraints, and a lack of involvement of the father (35.6%). Despite high levels of maternal knowledge of EBF, there are a number of personal, cultural, and societal factors that exist that serve to impede the achievement of optimal practices. It is recommended that strategies be focused on the enhancement of supportive factors—principally paternal participation—fostered breastfeeding support at work, and concertedly addressed maternal counselling, targeted towards those experiencing difficulties related to maternal health and confidence
The implications of language when teaching geomorphological concepts and maps: Addressing learner-teacher articulation gap in secondary schools of South Africa
Teaching and learning Geography in many countries require qualified teachers who are prepared to teach any Geography curriculum prescribed for Secondary schools. The findings further exposed the gap between the expectations of SMMEs and the current level of digital and vernacular language integration in terms of systematic support and deliverables. Additionally, the findings characterized the slow pace of transformation supported by policymakers in digitalization, mobile applications, and the adoption of vernacular languages, which is already at an advanced stage in similar emerging economies in the global South
Building resilience in the Sahel: Interactions between drought, degraded land, and household nutrition
Recurrent droughts, declining soil fertility, and environmental degradation continue to threaten food and nutrition security across the Sahel, particularly in Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Chad. This study examines the linkage between drought events, land degradation, and household nutrition outcomes using a multi-level event–study framework. The analysis combines Demographic and Health Surveys data on child stunting and wasting with CHIRPS and ERA5 rainfall anomalies to identify drought years, complemented by FEWS NET food security classifications. Results reveal that severe rainfall deficits correspond to significant increases in child stunting and wasting rates, especially among rural households reliant on rainfed agriculture. Regression simulations show that a one–standard–deviation decline in seasonal rainfall raises the probability of moderate food insecurity by 6–9 percent, while areas with higher land degradation experience stronger effects. The findings stress the urgency of integrating drought early–warning data, soil restoration programs, and nutrition interventions to strengthen household resilience. Policy implications emphasize scaling up adaptive land management and targeted safety nets in chronically drought-prone zones
