Relationship Between Overactive Bladder and Bone Fracture Risk in Female Patients
Nagasaki University (長崎大学)博士(医学)Background/Aim: Overactive bladder (OAB) has recently been recognized as an independent risk factor for falls and fractures. This study aimed to predict fracture risk in female patients with OAB symptoms. Patients and Methods: We assessed and compared the fracture risk in newly diagnosed female patients with OAB to those without OAB using the Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX), and investigated the relationship between fracture risk and OAB severity. Results: The present single-center, cross-sectional study included 177 female participants (79 with OAB, 98 without OAB). The OAB group was older (p=0.033) and shorter (p=0.010) compared to the non-OAB group. Compared to the non-OAB group, the OAB group had more patients with hypertension (p<0.001) and diabetes mellitus (p=0.011), as well as higher risks for major fractures (non-OAB group: 15.2±13.2%; OAB group: 23.6±14.1%; p<0.001) and hip fractures (non-OAB group: 6.3±11.0%; OAB group: 10.6±10.0%; p=0.007). In addition, those with moderate/severe OAB had the most significantly elevated risks for both major fractures (non-OAB group: 15.2±13.2%, mild-OAB: 17.6±12.5%, moderate/sever-OAB: 26.4±14.0%; p<0.001) and hip fractures (non-OAB group: 6.3±11.0%, mild-OAB: 6.5±7.6%, moderate/sever-OAB: 12.5±10.4%; p<0.001). Among the OAB symptoms, nocturia had the strongest correlation with fracture risk (major fracture, ρ=0.534; hip fracture, ρ=0.449; all p<0.001). Exploring the Application of NeRF in Enhancing Post-Disaster Response: A Case Study of the Sasebo Landslide in Japan
Rapid acquisition of 3D reconstruction models of landslides is crucial for post-disaster emergency response and rescue operations. This study explores the application potential of Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) technology for rapid post-disaster site modeling and performs a comparative analysis with traditional photogrammetry methods. Taking a landslide induced by heavy rainfall in Sasebo City, Japan, as a case study, this research utilizes drone-acquired video imagery data and employs two different 3D reconstruction techniques to create digital models of the landslide area. Visual realism and point cloud detail were compared. The results indicate that the high-capacity NeRF model (NeRF 24G) approaches or even surpasses traditional photogrammetry in visual realism under certain scenarios; however, the generated point clouds are inferior in terms of detail compared to those produced by traditional photogrammetry. Nevertheless, NeRF significantly reduces the modeling time. NeRF 6G can generate a point cloud of engineering-useful accuracy in only 45 min, providing a 3D overview of the disaster site to support emergency response efforts. Anemia Is a Predictor of Withdrawal from Peritoneal Dialysis in Stable Peritoneal Dialysis Patients
Introduction: The association between anemia and peritoneal dialysis (PD) withdrawal in patients with stable PD remains poorly established. Herein, we investigated the relationship between anemia and PD withdrawal in patients with stable PD. Materials and Methods: We included 43 patients undergoing PD for at least 6 months between October 2011 and December 2022. Patients were categorized based on their hemoglobin (Hb) levels at the time of their first peritoneal equilibration test (PET) during the study period as follows: Hb ≥ 11 g/dL and Hb < 11 g/dL. The PD withdrawal rates were compared between these groups. Patients were followed up until death or 31 July 2023. Results: During the follow-up, 36 patients discontinued treatment. Patients with Hb < 11 g/dL had a significantly higher PD withdrawal rate than those with Hb ≥ 11 g/dL. Cox proportional hazards analysis identified Hb level as a risk factor for PD withdrawal. Furthermore, Hb levels negatively correlated with the annual decline in urine volume. Conclusions: Our findings suggest anemia as a predictor of PD withdrawal in patients with stable PD. The negative correlation between Hb levels and the annual decline in urine volume implies that anemia may contribute to PD withdrawal via the deterioration of residual renal function.Kidney and Dialysis, 5(2), art. no. 15; 2025journal articl
DIY行動における心理的バリアの可視化と行為誘導の設計
This study investigates the psychological barriers that beginners face in DIY (Do It Yourself) activities and evaluates the effectiveness of structured support documents for novice users. Through a workshop with 50 university students, the study compares pre- and post-intervention responses to assess changes in perceived difficulty, self-efficacy, and motivation. Participants were grouped by their reported barriers and given different instruction documents tied to various furniture prototypes. The findings suggest that well-designed instructional materials can reduce anxiety and build confidence, especially when tailored to users’ specific psychological traits. Some barriers—such as cost or physical constraints—may require support beyond documentation. PorA of the type IX secretion is a ligand of the PorXY two-component regulatory system in Porphyromonas gingivalis
Nagasaki University (長崎大学)博士(歯学)Porphyromonas gingivalis is an important bacterium associated with chronic periodontitis. The type IX secretion system (T9SS) in P. gingivalis secretes conserved C-terminal domain (CTD) containing proteins, which are also called T9SS cargo proteins, including gingipain proteinases, to the cell surface and extracellular milieu. We have shown that gene expression of some T9SS component proteins is regulated by a two-component regulatory system, PorX-PorY, an ECF sigma factor, SigP, and a T9SS cargo protein, PorA. As PorA has its own CTD, PorA is mainly localized as an A-LPS-bound form and PorV-bound form on the cell surface. However, it remains unclear how PorA can activate the PorXY-SigP signaling cascade. In this study, our results revealed that the CTD of PorA can activate the PorXY-SigP signaling cascade via interaction with PorY. It is well known that the canonical role of CTD is to act as a secretion signal for T9SS protein export.
